Raiders sign CB Jones to contract extension

The Raiders signed cornerback Taiwan Jones to a three-year contract extension Monday, keeping the local product in a silver-and-black uniform through the 2017 season.
“I was excited when they came to me about the extension,” Jones said in a statement provided by the Raiders. “It is definitely a blessing for a local kid to be part of the Raiders turnaround. I’ve been an underdog all my life, so it’s very fitting for me to remain here.”
Jones, a Deer Valley High School graduate, started his NFL career as a running back, when the Raiders selected him in the fourth round of the 2011 draft.
He converted to cornerback last season as a way of getting on the field more often. The Raiders already had Darren McFadden, Rashad Jennings and Jeremy Stewart at running back.
Jones spent most of his time on special teams, where he developed into one of the league’s best players on kick and punt coverage.
Raiders coach Dennis Allen and Jones’ teammates campaigned hard for Jones to be recognized for his stellar special teams play by being selected to the Pro Bowl.
That didn’t materialize, but Jones vowed to work harder and perform better in 2014 and beyond. He now has the opportunity to do so for the Raiders.
“I feel good about next year,” Jones said. “Obviously, I was able to do a lot of good things on special teams last year. Unfortunately, I didn’t make the Pro Bowl last year, but that is something I’m shooting for this year.”
Fox Sports’ Mike Garafolo said Jones’ extension is for $4.35 million, meaning Jones is slated to earn $5 million over the next four seasons.

Primary objective this offseason is to get a FC QB. Trade for one, draft one, sign one. It don’t matter how. Just get one. Once we have a legit young FC QB, it’s time to go about getting a legit coach.
This league is all about the coach-qb combo. DA eventually must be replaced, unless he develops a talent for developing QB’s which I doubt.

Like they say in Baseball…”Speed Never Slumps…”

  • marks hair

Jike ive been saying… there’s three top, franchise level quarterbacks. Then Question mark carr, and a bunch of project scrubs..

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

Feb. 12 from my gmail acct. Says it was sent. no failure notice. Hmm.
Jesusraiderjim(I think) said he did too about the same time.

  • HELLSBELLS

MACK leaving Barr in has wake.

  • 0ak R8rs

Why does DA have to develop the QBs? What about OCs and position coaches? I doubt it’s the job of a defensive HC to develop QBs. Seems like DA should be taking care of other responsibilities. Like being the HC.

  • marks hair

    Da hired the coaches

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

How come collegiate teams didn’t seem to do this to any of the other great Defensive lineman taken at the top of drafts?

  • 0ak R8rs

What was their excuse for being complete sht the next two decades? Perhaps they didn’t build properly w a foundation for long term winning? Or maybe every other team in their division didn’t go to the playoffs the year before? Hrm….

  • marks hair

Reggie has to understand self preservation.. it has to be qb..

  • 0ak R8rs

Correct. But that’s not what he’s saying. I just said, why not the OC and position coaches?

  • aig-raiders

hahah…my laptop is too slow for my fingers at times.

Too bad he didn’t turn into the next Chris Johnson as you predicted on draft day.
You know, since we are mocking people’s lack of fessing up to failed predictions, right?

  • 0ak R8rs

That could go the other way. Last year to prove something, many experts r saying going a a rookie QB this year would be a bad move insofar as job security is concerned. I realize GMs that don’t have franchise QBs eventually get fired. Not sure he can afford to make that move this year tho. He’s in a tough spot.

  • Raider 8

again, in this case simply referring to how they took a bunch of guys who had never played together and were able to win…both teams.
not sure why they weren’t able to maintain their success but that’s another issue.

  • 0ak R8rs

Too bad Pryor didn’t turn into the greatest QB of all time either. Sometimes, I just wish he was actually right.

  • AutumnThunderstorm

    Indeed
Mack securing top ten, Barr late 1st to early 2nd.

Donald moving up the draft board faster than Dri’s forty time, okay Watkins’ forty.

  • Carl weathers

Did TJ even play corner last year?I think in maybe one game due to injuries. I know he came in at RB a few times. Reggie’s warming up the ink for Veldheer and others..

  • 0ak R8rs

Continuity wasn’t an issue last year anyway. The defense, w 10 new starters came together very well and very quickly. A testament to good coaching and smart players. Problem was we had no depth due to the cap issues and couldn’t maintain once the injuries started to get out of control. We fell apart after the bye, not before. Had nothing to do w the new players. Had mostly to do w guys like Jones and Adams and Ross getting way too many snaps. Too many for Woodson and Houston too, who both eventually broke down.

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

forgot about Taiwan being one of those.

  • AutumnThunderstorm

QB might cost him his job, if he passed on an elite football player.

  • Guest123

I can’t be any plainer to just say I don’t think DA is the right coach to turn this franchise around. I’m not rooting against him. He can take us part of the way back to relevance. But his upside as a coach is limited, just like players have ceilings. He brings a lot of good fundamentals and discipline and there’s a place for that especially on talent deprived teams, but once we start getting good talent built up, it’ll be time to call a spade a spade and move on from DA. I think Reggie will survive and DA will be upgraded as the team’s core talent improves.

I kind of think it gives him an excuse to go 5-11/6-10.
If he does that with Freeman, Schuabb or Vick and we have no youngster in the wings, he is gone.
If he does that with a 1st pick (say Manziel, Teddy or Bortles) or even a 2nd round pick in Carr or McCarron, and they show some signs of promise, I think he will be brought back.

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

Doubt he’s worried. Probably told Mark, “Look, we’re letting one of the best QB’s out there go, and it could take two, three years to find another one.” Mark signed off on it.

Each snap he played was one too many on defense. Guess he got $4.3 million for being a gunner. In general, I guess it’s not that big a deal. Seems like a lot of money, but we have to spend it. And better to spend it on our own. I just hopes he develops as a CB too. Then it would definitely be worth it.

  • RaidingTexas

Carr 2nd round? Oh no you didn’t!

  • 0ak R8rs

Flynn? I wouldn’t say he’s one of the best QBs. Far from it.

  • SlashNHack

    Don’t forget Ausbury :-)

  • 0ak R8rs

Plausible. Use the rookie as a scape goat.

  • SlashNHack

I could do 15 reps at 180 lbs as a junior in high school

  • Raider O

I’ll check again. I usually check my email everyday from the phone, but sometime emails get erased after 48 hours, and I don’t check junk daily. I hate email. You can use the same Name at Gmail. I own all 3. Hotmail, yahoo, and gmail

  • Carl weathers

He made some serious tackles on ST. I’m glad he’s back and for 1.4 mil per year, so what.

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

Isn’t it 225 at the combine?

  • 0ak R8rs

    New post.

  • Raider 8

i agree with that. heck roach played EVERY snap from what i read.
i think depth..or lack of is valid for why we stunk the latter part of the season.

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

no worries, you’re back and alive(or vice versa). I’ll save those, though, for your next UA.

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

    snicker

  • RaidingTexas

Could be reverse psychology too. Maybe they think he’ll be a bust and are just talking him up to push Houston into taking him. Jerruh certainly doesn’t want the Texans getting all the publicity around here.

  • Chino

@AdamSchefter: Former Colts GM Bill Polian just said on ESPN’s NFL Insiders that he projects Eastern Illinois QB Jimmy Garoppolo to be a first-round pick.

  • kuhlest

meh, I think you could hang your hat on 6 QBs in this draft….
    Bridgewater
    Manziel
    Bortles
    Carr
    McCarron
    Garoppolo

  • SlashNHack

Yeah…I was 180 and did 15 reps of 225. But then again I have “short arms”!

  • Michael

Yea heard him say as much on TV yesterday. One of the guys suggested that maybe Houston take clowney 1 and take garoppolo in the 2nd and polian said he wont be there for houston
