Raiders re-sign one of their prospective free agents

The Raiders re-signed veteran offensive lineman Khalif Barnes on Friday, making Barnes the first of the team’s 18 prospective unrestricted free agents to be locked up before free agency begins.
Barnes, who turns 32 in late April, spent the past five seasons with the Raiders, mostly at right offensive tackle.
He started 11 games at left offensive tackle last season in relief of injured regular Jared Veldheer. Barnes moved to left guard for the final five games upon Veldheer’s return.
“I’m so excited to be back,” Barnes said in a team press release. “I’m going on my sixth year here, and we’ve had some ups and downs but there are some unfinished things we have to do here. I want to be a part of the process that turns this thing around.”
The Raiders now have three of their starting offensive linemen under contract, along with center Stefen Wisniewski and right guard Mike Brisiel. Veldheer and veteran Tony Pashos are unsigned. The Raiders are adamant about wanting to re-sign Veldheer.
The Raiders are allowed to negotiate with their players until March 8 without competition from other teams. At that point, other teams are allowed to jump in the fray in advance of the start of free agency March 11.

Reggie should be trying to give Mack whatever he wants, move Wiz to LG, where he was a beast, lock up Veldheer, and walk away from that with a top 5 O-Line for the next 5 years, easy. Let the right side of the line work itself out between Barnes, Watson, Pashos, Brisiel, McCants, draft, etc. We do this, thats a good place for any QB to sit behind, rookie, vet, or unproven.

Boo Hoo Hoo …we didn’t tag Houston or Veldheer, guaranteeing they would be highly over paid

  • Dakota

    Whew!

  • 0ak R8rs

Why would we franchise the 10th or 15th best LDE and guarantee him top 5 money? And Veldheer will be resigned.

  • Dakota

He franchised that loser Branch….did you complain then?

What did we do with them? Seems to me like our GM is dare I say “Sitting on his hands”

Transition tagging Houston for more leverage…

Well, Reggie won’t set the market. Time to see what the NFL thinks veldheer is worth. Hope raiders work out a contract with him

Not sure why this is even debated. I agree 100% why not get that O-line set right now. Then move on to filling other holes.

  • Dakota

Yeah, if it were otherwise we would be sitting pretty!

  • AutumnThunderstorm

in the 3rd round, 2nd at the highest

  • 0ak R8rs

Sure. I’ve heard of it. Have you? Do you even know how it works?

The options for the transition tag are also limited. If Oakland decided to use the transition tag it would be only on defensive end Lamarr Houston and that is a long shot. That transition designation would guarantee Houston the average of the 10 largest salaries from 2013 at defensive end. This year that number is 10.633 million dollars which is way too much for Houston. He has played hard and has had some solid production for the Raiders, but nowhere near that value.

The only real decision McKenzie has this year is to franchise tag Jared Veldheer. Players never want the franchise tag because it is a one year contract in a violent sport. It seems like McKenzie will roll the dice with the confidence of working out that long term deal. If he changes his mind, he will have until tomorrow to use the tag.

Why are you so (minor) depressing. Cant you be more (Major) happy today?

  • TrevJo

Browns tagged Mack. Disappointed that we didn’t tag Veldheer. Well more worried than disappointed. Hopefully Veldheer appreciates that he wasn’t tagged, but if we don’t sign him long term that appreciation does us no good.

  • 1960AutumnWind

I wonder how the NFL likes not having AD the guy who used to sign such bad contracts they were not even useful in setting market value.

Would you agree that this is a “red flag” a GM that con’t even sign his own players in a timely manner?

  • 1960AutumnWind

Pretty confident we sign Veldy probably Wed or Thur. Houston not so much.

  • AutumnThunderstorm

Still might end up reading in ten to twenty minutes if we or another team applied a tag at the 12:59:59 mark.

  • marks hair

he’s done almost nothing right in his tenure as GM

So if someone else offers him 10 mill you just shrug and say “oh well? He wanted too much?”

Then what do we do to REPLACE a versatile run stopper?? After nearly a dozen years of being at the bottom of the league in run stopping?

    And at what cost?

Let me guess… you think 2 crap players at 5 mill a year is better than one good player at 10??
