Raiders don’t tag Veldheer or Houston

Despite the most salary cap room in the NFL, the Raiders declined to use the franchise tag Monday on either left tackle Jared Veldheer or defensive end Lamarr Houston.

When the 1 p.m. deadline (PST) came and went, Veldheer and Houston were five days away from being able to negotiate with other teams for their services.;

The Raiders have more than $66 million available under a cap projected at just over $133 million. A one-year tag on Veldheer would have cost the Raiders $11.6 million, while keeping Houston as a franchise player would have cost $13.1 million.

Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie said following the season he would use the franchise tag if necessary but preferred to work out long-term deals with club wanted in its future.

Although the free agency period begins March 11, agents for players can begin soliciting offers from other teams on Saturday, potentially driving up the price. Players cannot sign during that three-day window, which was instituted by the NFL this season to try and limit tampering.

Veldheer missed the first 12 games of the 2013 season following surgery to repair a torn left triceps. He has stated on numerous occasions he wants to remain with the Raiders and be part of the building process.

Houston, considered a leader by example and a versatile lineman who can play inside and outside, said following the season he thought it might be time to move on but coach Dennis Allen and McKenzie have both said they would like to keep him on the roster.

Despite just six sacks last season, Houston’s market value was enhanced when two coveted defensive ends _Greg Hardy of Carolina and Brian Orakpo of Washington _ were given franchise tags by their teams.

Veldheer was a third-round draft pick out of Division II Hillsdale in 2010 and Houston arrived in the second-round out of Texas that same season.

Other Raiders who are free to negotiate with other teams Saturday if they have not been re-signed include running backs Rashad Jennings and Darren McFadden, defensive tackle Vance Walker, safety Charles Woodson, cornerbacks Mike Jenkins and Tracy Porter, wide receiver Jacoby Ford, defensive end Jason Hunter, safety Usama Young, cornerback Phillip Adams, tight end Jeron Mastrud, guard-center Andre Gurode, tackle Tony Pashos and defensive tackle Daniel Muir.

You menstruate continuously…biotching about biotching is still biotching.

  • 1960AutumnWind

That is about as hard as trying to figure out what Beech Dog is thinking (censored… LOL)

  • TrevJo

Wouldn’t be worth it. If we signed Hardy or Graham it would cost us two 1st round picks in addition to having to pay the monster contract.

  • Davy Jones

It’s the draft picks. The Kraken would look good in SnB, but not two first rounders good. Although, with Reggie picking . . . .

  • BigBenRexor

Then what’s the difference between the “Exclusive and Non Exclusive” tags?

  • NYCRaider

I wouldnt mind that if there we similar results. Last year GB drafted behind us virtually every round and they had 3 rookies ranked in top 50 and we had only moore ranked at 40. GB drafted well but they made big FA moves like Reggie White and Charles Woodson. They also traded and got gems. I just think RM is over his head. He gets alot of forgiveness but I struggled with his inability to assess a situation

  • rifflicks

a negative times a negative is a positive…don’t cha know?

  • Gdog

Firing Knapp would be a great thing if he hadn’t hired Knapp2 to replace him.

Most of the things that worked out seemed to be dumb luck rather than pinpoint targeting.

  • Dakota

    ….but collecting two paychecks….nice!

  • LB32

They need to add some upper management with some real football experience. I mean, bowl cut, RM and DA are second-third year players.

  • kenchun24

Yeah but I think we would have to give up mucho pricey draft picks no? (like two #1′s and two #2′s or something)

  • BigBenRexor

Ahh, I see. Well Graham might be worth it.

  • 1960AutumnWind

Not a big Carr fan but he threw a lot of passes both short and long. The offense used short passes like runs. He can chuck it. There are other issues with him though.

  • Dakota

Exclusive means other teams can’t even talk to the player.

  • LB32

What does that tell you? They are still doing it and we aren’t. We hired the wrong guy. We didn’t hired the brains of the outfit.

  • Veldiman

It seems that it’s just not the fans that are complaining today:

    http://www.rotoworld.com/playernews/nfl/football-player-news/

The Raiders didn’t use the franchise tag on LT Jared Veldheer or RE Lamarr Houston by Monday afternoon’s deadline.

It means there’s nothing to stop Veldheer or Houston from reaching the open market if that’s their heart’s desire. It’s a surprising decision from the Raiders, who have not only the league’s worst roster, but also the most cap space. GM Reggie McKenzie must be confident he can get Veldheer locked up before the start of free agency, or believes he has a foolproof back-up plan. We wouldn’t count on it. Veldheer will have no shortage of suitors if he reaches the open market, and they’ll all be more competent than the team that made him the No. 69 pick of the 2010 draft.

  • AutumnThunderstorm

The one team that is probably most depressed at Reggie not tagging Vehldeer or Houston is Atlanta.

DE, Clowney and OTs, Matthews & Robinson are higher on the Raiders’ Draft Board than many thought.

  • Gdog

GB still seems to be drafting well after Reggie left?

How could that be? Perhaps because he didn’t have anything to do with it??

  • marks hair

I think non exclusive is just a cheaper tag but if you sign that guy you have to give the team he’s from a draft pick.

  • LB32

Broken clock syndrome: twice a day.

  • SnBG

Gentlemen and Ladies. You want to get back to the glory days then concentrate on getting top 5 O and D lineman. Not tagging players that are not top 5.

  • Veldiman
  • BigBenRexor

Yeah, not good. I don’t think people are upset that he didn’t get tagged, it’s that he was not signed prior to this deadline. Then Reggie could’ve at least guaged how far apart they are and then had the tag as an option, because JV won’t be cheap in the open market.

  • kenchun24

Exactly…Sam Shields/Tramon Williams were good Reggie low round picks. Rodgers is an elite QB so that lessens the overall team burden every year via the draft/FA…but you have to see results, especially from the drafted players. So far meh from Reggie’s FA’s and drafted players (even with the “wait 3 years” draft acumen, we gotta see something).

  • The Big Banana

I don’t feel either were worth the tag. Let’s see what happens between now and Sat, folks.

  • 909RaiderLifer

It’s ALWAYS about results..I can’t speak for others, but I’ve about had it with 8-24…

  • Dakota

Al gave Nnamdi the exclusive tag…..cut off any chance we had of some team falling in love with him and signing him and having to give us two first round picks. SMH

  • Veldiman

Yup. Check out the wording from Rotoworld – last 2 sentences. I don’t think they’re too high on RM either.

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

That sounds like that new Jake Gyllenhaal movie

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

now we’ll see what Reggie’s got. Tag is an easy out.

  • BigBenRexor

Doesn’t he also have a slight speech impediment? Or at least he looks like he does

  • Davy Jones

I thought signing your own FAs was part of that too. No?

  • SnBG

Maybe Mr McKenzie will stay with MM or grab a FA QB and then go for DE in the first and then Oline in the second and in free agency. I’d be good with that.

  • BigBenRexor

Now that the Franchise Tag negotiations have been cleared up for me, I still think it might be worth signing Jimmy Graham to a large contract and draft picks. He’s young, talented and TE’s usually have a pretty long career.

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

    Not FA’s yet.

  • kenchun24

    lol

  • AutumnThunderstorm

For our 5 day window remaining, who will we sign or cut?

  • http://www.cosmicdanceband.com/ SilverandBlack666

“A source informed of the Raiders’ thinking told NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport there was no communication with Veldheer leading up to the 4 p.m. ET deadline for franchise tags.

Had this been a talent-rich organization strapped for salary-cap space, the inaction would be understandable.

As it is, though, McKenzie has a league-high $65 million to spend and a clear mandate from his owner to start winning and stop making excuses.

Just entering their primes and still improving, Veldheer and Houston sit firmly inside the top 10 on Around The League’s list of the best 101 free agents this season. McKenzie needs to acquire more players of their ilk rather than setting them free to the highest bidder.”

I’m not talking about anyone in particular. This is hypothetical.
but let’s just say some fat donkey brained twát is the bane of your existence….
would it be in poor taste to jokingly hope that’s some form of molasses or syrup would build up in his arteries stopping him ruining the next 10 years of my life?

Not for our #5 overall and next year’s, which will probably be a top ten pick.

Sign him after the draft, we keep our #5 and give up a first in 2015, 16.

  • BigBenRexor

Had to make sure we had Plan B (Khalif Barnes) in place before talking to JV. Plus I think Reggie probably got confused with the time zones.

  • Dakota

    Yeah, that is okay…..

  • kenchun24

Was about to edit that in “with Reggie picking” part lol

  • SnBG

That person has a lot of power over you . Maybe it’s time you got a life.

  • Chino

Don’t see any cuts happening. We don’t save much cap

  • BigBenRexor

Sure, if possible, that’d be nice.

  • marks hair

so what are you doing on a Raider blog then?

  • 0ak R8rs

Why do you assume we would replace them w below average players? Your logic is to complain about something that’s two steps in the future? Suspect at the least.

  • AutumnThunderstorm

Only the transition and non exclusive:

Worilds, Graham, and Mack not respectively.
