Polian surprised Raiders didn’t use franchise tag

Former Colts general manager and ESPN analyst Bill Polian said Wednesday he expected either tackle Jared Veldheer or right end Lamarr Houston to receive a franchise tag, given the Raiders stated preference for bring back their own players and their room under the salary cap.

The Raiders are presumably negotiating with both players in hopes of having them signed before Saturday, when they can begin fielding offers from other teams. No contracts can be signed before March 11, with the open period giving Veldheer and Houston a chance to assess their value on the market and bring their top offer back to general manager Reggie McKenzie.

“It might have been that the demands of the agents were out of line,” Polian said on an ESPN national conference call. It could be that maybe the cash demands were something they didn’t feel they could deal with or meet. Only Reggie can answer that question.”

Veldheer appeared to be the most likely of the two players to be franchised. Despite Houston’s status as the most steady defensive lineman on the Raiders, it would have been a surprise had they locked themselves in a situation where they paid him $13.1 million for a season on the franchise designation.

“I was a bit surprised something didn’t get done,” Polian said. “But we’re not there yet, too. They could get something done before we hit free agency, and if that’s the case, the question will be answered.”

– The Raiders tendered six exclusive rights free agents _ safety Brandian Ross, cornerback Chimdi Chekwa, running back Jeremy Stewart, linebacker Kaelin Burnett, offensive lineman Matt McCants and fullback Jamize Olawale. The club will not announce those transactions until they have actually signed contracts.

Exclusive rights free agents have no bargaining power and are tied to their team unless they aren’t offered a contract.

pero el papi davis tiene tarjetas de credito, y McKenzie no tiene nada que ver con el interes. A gastar, senor.

  • Veldiman

Alex?! Is that you? Glad to know that you’re really more of the middle/level mind. I myself am looking forward for tomorrow’s frenzy. I wish RM will take whatever steps necessary to get us back to respectability. As for finding starters in the 1, 2, 3 rounds – YES. I also would like above average production for our round 4 pick. A Pro-Bowler in the 1st? Well, at the very least, make the All-Rookie 1st team. As for wins, I would like 9 wins and double digit wins from then on. Trouble about band wagons is being true fans, we live and die, soar and crash with our team. Band wagons are for more onlookers and casuals, not die hards. Happy Pre-Free Agency Day!

  • EMRaiders

It’s not about overspending. It’s about staying true to an old winning formula. And in RM’s case, his word. You build your team through the draft, bring up players in your system, keep those players, and then add complimentary players through FA. All of which was preached by RM and DA. But so far, they have done the exact opposite.

It would be understandable if the players being let go were not our best players, or if the positions had enough talent that the player leaving could be replaced, or as in last year’s case, contracts were too expensive.

But to have the $ we have now, and the holes we have now specially at the positions of the players leaving, and no back up plan in house? C’mon…

  • EMRaiders

edited. thanks. the O and I are next to each other on the keyboard….lol

  • 0ak R8rs

I wanted King all the way, as much as I cared about who our punter was in the first place, that is. I also thought it was a good move to stash him on IR the year before. Youth over experience w a 4-12 team. Easy call.

  • Gdog

Veldy and Houston to fulfill Reggie’s promise to keep our best players… one other blue chip FA.

The rest of the 89% on 2nd and third tier players any way Reggie pleases.

    Too much to ask??

  • accupolco gold aka elmo

bueno tal vez Generalísimo McKenzie debe obtener una tarjeta de crédito. ¿No?

Yea. Way too much. Don’t see us getting ANY of that. You’re gonna be super angry tomorrow is my prediction.

  • Veldiman

Well, we do have to save some for the draft picks, June 1st cuts & maybe for some late free agent pick ups….

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

    Wow!

  • accupolco gold aka elmo

    No edit. No yet.

  • Alex7

yeah, I don’t mind an intelligent rise back to relevance. Don’t need the sign everyone for whatever they want Raiders team anymore.

  • 0ak R8rs

Haven’t heard anyone say that. Except maybe August. And even then not in so many words.

  • 0ak R8rs

    What!

  • EMRaiders

Haz “refresh”, o mejor dicho “refresco”

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

I was talking about Accupoloco, with that ‘wow’.

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

    sorry.

  • Gdog

I honestly think Veldy still stays.

If they both walk Reggie just looks like a moron and a laughing stock… I could not believe anyone would PURPOSELY let that happen.

  • Gdog

Part of how he spends it any way he pleases…

  • 0ak R8rs

Oh. I don’t read it. He’s slightly amusing, but it’s not even Spanish. Idk what he’s speaking there.

  • EMRaiders

Sometimes it looks like a combo of Spanglish and Portuguenglish.

  • Blackholepriest

I used to spend a lot of time with his father Sidney when he was a coach of the Warriors. I wouldn’t mind seeing the kid in Silver and Black.

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

His 1st ten posts here are perfect english. I guess he thinks it’s amusing.

  • 0ak R8rs

They said Friday night they were gonna put a big push on to sign Veldheer in the next 48 hours. That 48 hours has passed. I say he’s gone. Houston is gone for sure, 110%.

  • Gdog

    Yikes. Nobody is that stupid.

  • Raider-Fan-inKC

I’d agree if both players end up walking Reggie will have justifiable criticism until he can replace them with a FA or draft pick of equal or better standing

  • Gdog

It gave the playoff teams extra wiggle room to sign one blue chip instead of none.

    Obviously.

Which means the crap teams have to spend more to compete.

  • 0ak R8rs

We have $65 million dollars to spend and I’ve NEVER been this negative about an upcoming season.

  • Blackholepriest

Reggie is doing what Reggie does. He’s scared to screw this up so he does nothing because it’s safer.

  • EMRaiders

NFL Network is showing “the tuck rule” game, with player commentary. Everybody is calling it what it should’ve been. FUMBLE!

  • Michael

So McClain is making a comeback huh

  • Gdog

Uhh, no such person exists. Veldi and Houston are the top dogs left standing at their positions besides maybe Johnson at DE.

All other GMs are not insane enough to leave them available…

  • Blackholepriest

Not really once he was healthy and you saw his play they should’ve made him an offer. If he turns it down then at least you tried. To let him get to FA was stupid……..period

They should’ve made every attempt to sign both long before FA.

  • accupolco gold aka elmo

Los Raiderios han vuelto muy patético y letárgico y ha sido triste y doloroso. Lo siento. Ya no puede convertirse en dolor. Til que pueden ganar no voy writher más.

And one would ask why I don’t have much confidence in Reggie having a roster ready to go this year, $65 million dollars or not?

The Oakland Raiders are going to be one of the worst teams in football in 2013. The roster just doesn’t have much depth or quality.

That made their decision to keep four quarterbacks and two punters, reported by Josh Dubow of the Associacted Press (via Yahoo! Sports), even more curious.

Oakland’s quarterback situation is a mess. Matt Flynn was signed to be the starter, but he has once again failed to impress in the offseason and preseason. It now appears that Terrelle Pryor has the inside track on the starting job.

Fourth-round pick Tyler Wilson was originally thought to be talented enough to challenge Flynn and Pryor, but he didn’t play in the second or third games of the preseason and was outperformed by undrafted free agent Matt McGloin, who also made the roster.

It’s supremely unlikely that the team will opt to keep all four quarterbacks into the season, so this is a situation to monitor.

As for the punters? Apparently, coach Dennis Allen couldn’t choose between Chris Kluwe and Marquette King, and as of now, both players are currently on the roster.

There’s a chance that general manager Reggie McKenzie will look to move one in a trade, but it’s unlikely they’d receive a draft pick as compensation. Look for one to be released at some point before the team travels to Indianapolis for its Week 1 showdown against the Colts.

And if worst comes to worst, the Raiders can keep both Kluwe and King. After all, they’ll be punting a lot this season.
