First wave of Raiders UFA reports, rumors

The Raiders agreed to terms with Rodger Saffold to be their left tackle Tuesday, with Jared Veldheer departing to join the Arizona Cardinals, according to numerous reports.

Other reports have defensive end Lamarr Houston heading to Chicago to sign with the Bears and running back Darren McFadden agreeing to return to the Raiders on a one-year contract.

The Raiders are also reportedly in the mix for Tampa Bay cornerback Darrelle Revis, who is expected to be traded or released Wednesday.

The new league year began Tuesday at 1 p.m. and the Raiders have yet to confirm any transactions.

Saffold, the first pick of the second round of the 2010 draft (No. 33 overall) by the St. Louis Rams, has played both tackles spots and filled in at right guard last season.

In four seasons with the Rams, Saffold, 26, missed 17of 64 games, with a torn pectoral in 2011 and a knee injury in 2012. He has started 16 games only once, in his rookie season. He was replaced as left tackle when the Rams signed Jake Long in free agency.

Veldheer, a third-round pick in the same draft as Saffold, was identified by general manager Reggie McKenzie and coach Dennis Allen as a player the Raiders wanted back. However, the club did not apply the franchise tag or sign Veldheer to a long-term deal before the free agency deadline.

McFadden’s return, reported by CSN-Bay Area, comes as a surprise given his production last season (379 yards, 3.3 yards per carry) and injury history. McKenzie said following the season he expected McFadden’s agent to test the open market, which he apparently did during the three-day open negotiation period.

Revis is due $16 million in salary in 2014 and it remains to be seen whether he would reduce that figure. A trade would also cost draft picks, something McKenzie has said in the past he would be reluctant to do.

    good points

You do realize that it is possible that Saffold goes to guard and we draft Robinson at 5.
As I have said we will never return to the playoffs till both lines are upgraded. No one knows what we will do with our first pick.
If we signed Veld, you could scratch Robinson form the list. That is still in play and no one can doubt that Robison is better than Veld.

Give it up. Raider management stinks, and every single NFL exec knows it.

its all good. One nation one goal.

Oh please…go revel in this team/orgs continued downward slide while the rest of us get in the lifeboats of the “Reggie Raider Era Sinking Ship”…keep playing that violin Alex!

It’s certainly starting to look that way. No excuse for losing Veldheer, Jennings, Jenkins & even Houston. No steps forward, 4 steps backwards.

Time to change our identity from OakTown to TankTown.

we may after draft. will see

RM assured that result by letting Jennings go & resigning 1.8 YPC DMac. Great plan.

  • r8ter4evr

I am a man of Faith in Jesus but RM not so, how can you still not see he is making terrible decisions and lacks the skills to properly negotiate with our former valuable starters. Now you want to waste a pick on a LT COME ON WAKE UP

  • r8ter4evr

Houston WILL be a STAR on Bears

Peppers, Allen and Will Smith…at DE, Lol

On a talent less team they were always overmatched give it up with your reasoning

If season tickets were a consideration for 2014/5, they are no longer a thought. That ship sailed today. It’s about the only way we can protest PURE STUPIDITY!

We’re taking manziel. With a patchwork OL now he makes most sense. A QB driven league. Veldheer didn’t help us win anything. Saffold more versatile.

  • kuhlest

you guys upset now??? wait til the draft////hehehe

  • kuhlest

    which show and channel?

  • Blackholepriest

Hey Raliegh McKenzie why do you come in here and lie like a dog thinking it’s going to help your fat twin brother.
Go away dumbbell, you make yourself look dumber than your dumb brother.

    Dumb and dumber Mckenzie brothers.

  • Blackholepriest

    Reggie and Raliegh……….dumb and dumber.

    8-8 to 4-12

Knew we were taking qb when we got Sparano back. Was leaning toward JM. Pretty sure he is it now. Vick, JM, Pryor. All skill sets in the same vicinity. Given the assured clusterphuk of a OL they will need every mobil QB they can get.

Wait a minute. LV played 3 positions.

    It’s a one year contract.

    Ignore? He counts on it.

Clowney will not get past #2.

  • Return

Watson is going to get beat like a drum if he starts at LT this year. He might prove to be HOF’er next year or later. But this year he’s getting his azz beat at LT and any qb he’s protecting will get the same.

  • Return

    No. No. No.

Paying Saffold 8 million is high but that isn’t the real issue. The issue is getting rid of JV and replacing him with Saffold at LT for MORE money.

Now if you are telling me we are still in the process of picking up a LT to replace the production of JV I’m all for it.

  • Stabler

McFadden? We really couldn’t get another injury prone RB that averages 3.3 YPC cheaper?

  • Veldiman

Sorry, BnB, I don’t do video games. I’m sure you can have lot of fun with them, but don’t have time for them. I just meant that maybe he needed to work on JV a lot earlier. I see now that he was not in the plans all along. So be it. I hope our line proves itself. Winning. That’s the goal.

  • turf toe

I believe her, too. Why would she lie? Veldheer already has his deal and is gone. I think her son really wanted to stay, but Reggie gave him no choice.

  • SnBG

Good morning nation. Slow and steady is the way to go in free agency. Reggies approach is a good one so far. Saffold is a better fit for the Raiders and if we can get Tuck and Revis that would be a good thing. Perhaps we will pick up a WR today also.

  • SnBG

DMC comes cheap this year and we have Murray,Sheets also. I’m OK with Darrin at this price.
