First wave of Raiders UFA reports, rumors

The Raiders agreed to terms with Rodger Saffold to be their left tackle Tuesday, with Jared Veldheer departing to join the Arizona Cardinals, according to numerous reports.

Other reports have defensive end Lamarr Houston heading to Chicago to sign with the Bears and running back Darren McFadden agreeing to return to the Raiders on a one-year contract.

The Raiders are also reportedly in the mix for Tampa Bay cornerback Darrelle Revis, who is expected to be traded or released Wednesday.

The new league year began Tuesday at 1 p.m. and the Raiders have yet to confirm any transactions.

Saffold, the first pick of the second round of the 2010 draft (No. 33 overall) by the St. Louis Rams, has played both tackles spots and filled in at right guard last season.

In four seasons with the Rams, Saffold, 26, missed 17of 64 games, with a torn pectoral in 2011 and a knee injury in 2012. He has started 16 games only once, in his rookie season. He was replaced as left tackle when the Rams signed Jake Long in free agency.

Veldheer, a third-round pick in the same draft as Saffold, was identified by general manager Reggie McKenzie and coach Dennis Allen as a player the Raiders wanted back. However, the club did not apply the franchise tag or sign Veldheer to a long-term deal before the free agency deadline.

McFadden’s return, reported by CSN-Bay Area, comes as a surprise given his production last season (379 yards, 3.3 yards per carry) and injury history. McKenzie said following the season he expected McFadden’s agent to test the open market, which he apparently did during the three-day open negotiation period.

Revis is due $16 million in salary in 2014 and it remains to be seen whether he would reduce that figure. A trade would also cost draft picks, something McKenzie has said in the past he would be reluctant to do.

    Peppers released.

You can have andre brown. Raiders interested.

  • Davy Jones

Only one? In his first draft with a #1 and a #2, Reggie drafted an undersized speedy corner and a diamond in the rough OL. In his most important FA period, he overpaid an injury prone OG to play out of position. #ghostly possession

If you are losing sleep over Jennings you are probably a reeetarded bed wetter anyway.

  • 0ak R8rs

True. Even if we could get one, they’d be burned out at the bye.

  • aig-raiders

nope not putting any spin on it. Again, we should have signed both. I expect to overpay for any players but not for an injury prone guy.

    160k game bonuses.

Saints still haven’t released RB Darren Sproles and now plan to trade him due to heavy interest, per ESPN source. Not being released, though

  • Charlie

    This is fantastic.
As I been telling you misguided souls, our line play is way below average and we will not overpay for FA.
Further our linemen including Veld and Houston dissapear against playoff teams. Repeat after me. They get dominated by playoff teams.
I told you Veld=Barry Sims and Houston =Rod Coleman.
We are 53-123 since 2003 and you guys are sad to see players go?
Those guys were not that good.
Now you want me to believe you guys know more than Sparano and Reggie about Veld and Saffold.
    Right.
No team has gone longer that the Raiders without using a first round pick on a lineman. None.
Further, with Saffold’s versatitly no one will know how we will spend our first round pick.

  • ElkGRaider

We weren’t that far off from respectable gentlemen. We faltered down the stretch. Why? Depth. Injuries killed us. Look for a bunch of moves from Reggie on the second tier guys. Hopefully he doesn’t sign them all the 1 year contracts though (can’t get 2 years Regg?)

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

You’re not stupid MR so quit, so quit giving him a pass for the mess today.
I wanted to give Reggie a third year too but today he is showing that he should be fired.
Before he screws up the draft.

BS. We don’t have a QB or much talent…

a huge improvement over the 1st and 2nd rounders from 2003-2009. Thanks.

  • marks hair

all will go to playoff teams

  • Davy Jones

Will not overpay for FA? Saffold 16 million? To be honest, I didn’t think Reggie would overpay either. I was wrong, but not in the way I would have wanted to be.

  • Michael

We just overpaid for saffold. The entire league knows it. Now we probably had to in order to sign him. But yes we did overpay

  • 1960AutumnWind

Now you must be being sarcastic.

  • Alex7

as Veld misses half the year with an injury after a PED-ish photo, and plays worse as the season wore on. Excellent point.

  • MachoManRandySavage

So. Reggie defenders say that Reg wants to build through the draft and not overspend in FA like Ol man Al… Then Reg goes out and gives an injury prone player the largest contract for an OG in history! build through the draft my coconuts!

  • PlunkforHOF

WTF about what I said earned that? I criticize the blog traffic and now I’m a gay fvck? Or are you just an azzhole? I’m going to release you from my last sentence. Please.. take the gas pipe.

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

    Fantastic?
If you’re talking about your post, then you’re correct.

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

    “We will not overpay FA.”
    LoL

  • Charlie

Please. How many games did we win when Veld returned? Zero.
Did you see Veld and Houston against playoff teams while they were here? They got dominated most of the time.
Sure they look good against the Jags. That is the problem. They are hardly studs.
You really think Saffold who can play three positions is not more valuable than Veld?
You really think Sparano and Reggie do not know more about Veld and Saffold than you?

  • turf toe

You really think we don’t know who you actually are?

  • Charlie

    I told you so.
    Veld=Sims Houston =Rod Coleman.
    Nothing more nothing less.

  • turf toe

After all this, I would not be surprised to hear that Gregg Knapp has been signed to a new contract.

  • BigBenRexor

You must not remember Rod Coleman having good years with the Falcons.

  • turf toe

Mr. Versatility will lead the Raiders to the promised land.

  • Charlie

    Maybe your right.
There is a massive conspiracy to tank the Raiders then move them to LA.
You guys all know that Saffold who plays three positions can not possibly be worth more than Veld.
More realistically our players are the primary reason we 53-123 since 2003. They are bad or VERY overrated.
See Bush, Wimbley, Kelly, Huff, DHB, McClain, Bryant etc.
How about we get new better players?
    Finally, players being held accountable.

  • turf toe

“Your” (sic) right, Chuck. Players like Veldheer and Lamaar, who were not valuable and nobody wanted, needed to go. And it’s those darned players who make the GM and coach look bad. Shame on them.

  • Charlie

He was an OK player and so is Houston.
My point is that Houston gets dominated by good teams. Totally disappears then pads stats at garbage time or against weak teams.
Same as Bryant and Kelly. Not worth his contract. Many players just as good or better for a lot less available in the draft.

  • BDAtlanta

    Oregon Raiders?
    Portland Raiders?

  • BDAtlanta

    oh nooooooes

  • turf toe

Take a coconut, paint a face on it and call it a guard, and Reggie will pay eight million for it.
