Raiders sign top-notch DE to replace Houston

The Raiders helped redirect the spotlight from their waffling on their first high-profile move in free agency by signing veteran defensive end Justin Tuck on Thursday.
Tuck, 30, signed a two-year contract that calls for him to make as much as $11 million over the life of the deal, according to ESPN.
“Last week, I absolutely did not see it coming,” Tuck said in a conference call. “It wasn’t necessarily on my radar at that point in time, but everything accelerated pretty quickly, and I’m excited. I really am. I like the direction that this team is talking about going in, and I just want to be a part of it.”
In Tuck, the Raiders found a replacement for departed defensive end Lamarr Houston. Some might say that the Raiders improved in that regard, given Tuck’s penchant for sacking the quarterback on a regular basis.
Houston notched six sacks last season and 16 over his four-year Raiders tenure. Tuck recorded 11 last season and 60 ½ during his nine-year Giants career.
Bringing in Tuck soothes some of the sting from the Raiders voiding a long-term contract with offensive lineman Rodger Saffold after the Raiders discovered a medical condition during Saffold’s physical that concerned them about moving forward.
The Raiders also are in the process of seeing whether they can land defensive tackle Justin Hatcher and outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley.
Hatcher and Woodley reached Alameda on Wednesday, and they still are in talks with Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie and others today.
Hatcher and Woodley are scheduled to fly to Nashville to meet with the Tennessee Titans tonight if they don’t reach agreement with the Raiders.

Woodley…fine. Bodies are needed…but again what’s the plan? 3-4? 4-3? More linebackers maybe for a 2-6-3 base defense because the Raids still have holes at CB/FS/DE/DT (and LT still…in day 3).

Or the so called Allen/Tarver fave of a defense that is “versatile” & “multiple”? As in having the “versatility” to get “beatdown” in multiple ways.

Just signing whatever aging vet gives the Reggie Raiders one or two charity years isn’t much of a plan. It’s the same as last year except the players are older while the other (arguably younger) 2013 one year Mercs’ have all moved on to other teams. Why not keep 2 or 3 of those guys so you don’t have to continually replace an entire squad every year!

Makes zero sense. But play on Reg, play on…to that pink slip in early 2015.

steve smith quckly, then wait a little to get a little better deal for allen, then wilfork once released, then vick, then incognito

Chances are we get at least one of em
    Sims
    Smith
    Walker

    As does DVAG.

  • Chuck

Agreed. Injuries aside, Saffold isn’t good enough to command that kind of money. Looks bad that the contract he ended up signing was significantly less than the one Oakland offered.

  • scooboy

11 sacks>6 sacks. True pass rusher> not a true pass rusher.

  • TrevJo

    inconceivable

  • JV.

    Melton, raji

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

Of course we could get Mack. Just takes effort.

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

Reggie keep 11.5 mil in his pocket for 5 days? No worries there, methinks.

  • AutumnThunderstorm

if Tuck stays in shape, he will be just as solid for the Raiders as he was with NY
Woodley only 29, still in his prime
Howard near the same age as Vehldeer

  • Reggie’s Red ‘Fro

These aren’t one year deals anymore. Plan is to draft well and have the rookies learn from these vets. Key here is to draft well. Plus Reggie is far from done. Relax

  • Michael

Steve Smith and Alex mack. Let’s go

  • Raideralex99

100% correct kenchun24 … Nothing is being accomplished

  • Chuck

Well you gotta give em credit for trying today at least. I think Woodley might be completely washed up, but that still makes him the Raiders second best player behind Tuck.

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

I think that word means what you think it means.

  • Elliot

With tuck and woodley along with roach with have some nice leadership out there on D. Plus the championship pedigree also a bonus

  • Chino

Walker not only visiting chiefs but packers as well. Oh well

  • TrevJo

I agree with a bit less concern than you’re expressing. I hope these guys fit into a solid plan scheme wise. I’ll tell you what the Woodley signing means to me though, I think it means Mack and Barr are unlikely picks for us when we already Woodley and Moore as pass rushing LBs.

  • Chuck

Well let’s be fair here, it doesn’t make up for past decisions but Woodley/Tuck is at least slightly better than Houston/Hunter.

  • Davy Jones

Slightly better. Tuck or Woodley vs. Houston is a push, mostly because of Houston’s youth. Makes it a short term improvement. But Tuck AND Woodley together has to be called a net improvement

On the other hand, Veldheer leaves a big hole at LT, nice signing though Howard might be.

Losing Porter and Jennings sucks, but that’s chump change. Not worried about that.

Melton should be our number one DT prospect. Pro-Bowler and young.

  • DKnight007

Sure. It’s also more money for Hatcher probably. He will bust in Washington. Its a given. Can use that extra money on Cb Thomas, Sims, Walker or A Smith.

  • Chuck

Yep. I think if Clowney is available it means they pass too.

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

There weren’t anywhere near billions on earth when that was believed.

  • Michael

    He tweet anything?

  • AutumnThunderstorm

    disagree
it would’ve been awesome to add the signings we just made to the resigning of Vehldeer & Houston; didn’t happen
Houston & Vehldeer were solid players for the Raiders; they no longer play for the Raiders although they are Raiders for life
it’s all about the Raiders of the U.S.A.
    Silver & Black

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

There’s more people alive today than have lived before.

  • kenchun24

Nah…you take or overload for a spot if the player you covet is there – Tuck or Woodley may not even last to 2015 so if an elite pass rushing/impact defender prospect like Khalil Mack is there you take him regardless.

Then your job is to find a way to get use of all your picks/signings. Weird concept for Reggie/Allen it seems though.

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

I got more. And I don’t like soccer.

  • kuhlest

    Woodley is 3-4 yrs younger

  • Davy Jones

A lot of DTs on the market. Melton visited with the Vikes, they paid Joseph $6 a year. Raiders can outbid that easily, if they are so inclined.

  • kenchun24

I don’t trust you or “your plan” Reggie Fro lol

He is doing better today, but we still need a LT. We could have been in better shaper if he kept JV

  • Depcharger

i agree with that. houston seems to dissapear in some games. the d-line just has been so bad that he looks good in some games. (sort of like the a group of ugly girls, the least ugliest all of a sudden look sorta hot). we should be giving a prime contract for someone like that.

w/ veldheer, its a different story. he is a legit top 10 LT in this league, especially during the years hue jackson was here. reggie f*cked up this one.
