Raiders sign top-notch DE to replace Houston

The Raiders helped redirect the spotlight from their waffling on their first high-profile move in free agency by signing veteran defensive end Justin Tuck on Thursday.
Tuck, 30, signed a two-year contract that calls for him to make as much as $11 million over the life of the deal, according to ESPN.
“Last week, I absolutely did not see it coming,” Tuck said in a conference call. “It wasn’t necessarily on my radar at that point in time, but everything accelerated pretty quickly, and I’m excited. I really am. I like the direction that this team is talking about going in, and I just want to be a part of it.”
In Tuck, the Raiders found a replacement for departed defensive end Lamarr Houston. Some might say that the Raiders improved in that regard, given Tuck’s penchant for sacking the quarterback on a regular basis.
Houston notched six sacks last season and 16 over his four-year Raiders tenure. Tuck recorded 11 last season and 60 ½ during his nine-year Giants career.
Bringing in Tuck soothes some of the sting from the Raiders voiding a long-term contract with offensive lineman Rodger Saffold after the Raiders discovered a medical condition during Saffold’s physical that concerned them about moving forward.
The Raiders also are in the process of seeing whether they can land defensive tackle Justin Hatcher and outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley.
Hatcher and Woodley reached Alameda on Wednesday, and they still are in talks with Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie and others today.
Hatcher and Woodley are scheduled to fly to Nashville to meet with the Tennessee Titans tonight if they don’t reach agreement with the Raiders.

He is coming off an injury season (Reggie like this) and could play for one year to show he is still a tier 1 player……

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

If Reggie can get him I’ll think more kindly of his ability to actually make a smart move.

  • JV.

Won 3 rings… At the end of his career. Wants to have enough money and financial structure on his way out… We are the only team that could pay him.

  • Dakota

    Booooo

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

    Then match it.

    Give him Safford style money!

  • Raider-Fan-inKC

    Isn’t Burentt still under contract?

Sorry for the hate Reggie good job I knew you had a method to your madness go raiders

  • Dakota

Justin Tuck….I think old LMN really wanted to draft him back in the day….you were spot on with that one LMN.

  • RediaR

He’ll sign the left handed Vick and make LT less important so Barnes and Watson can battle for the job.

  • Chino

Titans already announced the whitehurst signing. If things went well, you’ll be hearing about pay sims as well

  • JV.

Well worth it might I add.

  • R8erEduc8er

    Yep.

  • Dakota

    Soccer still sucks though….

  • Davy Jones

    I’m down for Howard money.

  • SilverandBlack666

    Yes it does!

  • No one claimed Reg. was smart

I like it. bring Vick in, Reg!

  • SilverandBlack666

If he signs Vick I will not renew my tickets next year.

  • RediaR

The pattern would suggest we do it more this year than last year. I’d like to get Mack too, but I don’t want to get my hopes up.

  • Raider_Riff

    We are targeting him.

    Reggie is trying.

No telling if he’s opening the check book enough tho. Im sick of him lowballing guys. We need a stout OL to protect our QB we draft this year.

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

    Yeah, I think he did.
    Also, ScottishRaider did.

  • RediaR

    all of them.

  • TrevJo

Houston started at RDE, Hunter started at LDE

  • r8ter4evr

Now go get Harrison and team him back up with Woodley

  • AutumnThunderstorm

    transition tag
we are not required to match the tag amount…. sheeesh
we can offer from league minimum to total cap balance
Cleveland has five business days to match offer or Mack is a Raider

  • Chino

Check this out. We missed out

  • No one claimed Reg. was smart

What? Wait for summer and ask the world outside the U.S. what they are watching on TV…6 billion people can’t be wrong!

  • TrevJo

    At 6’5″ 268″ I can’t see Tuck as a 3-4 DE, that’s a slender build.

  • RediaR

I don’t like the RDT spot in either situation. Not that I’m against Donald totally, just not at 5.

  • AutumnThunderstorm

    check what out

  • Goldie7

You don’t need to apologize, because we Raider fans are very protective our team; we want the best.

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

    Fik that.
He screwed it up on the first day of FA.
    End of story.

  • Davy Jones

I’m a few more away. He’s up off the canvas after a standing 8, but brotha nearly got knocked the f*ck out.

  • DKnight007

McK was being too cheap with Hatcher huh? Adding him would have been nice.

  • RediaR

Sure they can. Read any history book.

  • Raider-Fan-inKC

at one point in time billions of people around the world thought the Earth was the center of the universe :P

  • PlunkforHOF

    We got Woodley

  • AutumnThunderstorm

Tuck was the priority between Tuck, Woodley, and Hatcher.
    We got Tuck.

  • JV.

@RaidersBeat: #Raiders fall short on Jason Hatcher. But look at the bright side, they didn’t “sign” him and “un-sign” him a day later.

  • r8ter4evr

Reggie we just want this team back to being a champion again keep up the good work thank you brother

  • TrevJo
  • RediaR

    and woodley

  • Davy Jones

You get the feeling he might leave that one for a while, with the transition tag, take care of other business first . . .

  • Bo Schembechler Jackson

    Um, Darren VagFadden?

  • RaidingTexas

Always looking for the negative angle.

  • Raidertalk

Hey you were right with your feeling on Reggie’s two solid days of failure. To me it was amazing that Reggie’s staff or relatives were in here trying to defend his stupid moves. I guess that’s what Reggie pays his staff /relatives to argue with the REAL fans. SMH
