Raiders sign top-notch DE to replace Houston

The Raiders helped redirect the spotlight from their waffling on their first high-profile move in free agency by signing veteran defensive end Justin Tuck on Thursday.
Tuck, 30, signed a two-year contract that calls for him to make as much as $11 million over the life of the deal, according to ESPN.
“Last week, I absolutely did not see it coming,” Tuck said in a conference call. “It wasn’t necessarily on my radar at that point in time, but everything accelerated pretty quickly, and I’m excited. I really am. I like the direction that this team is talking about going in, and I just want to be a part of it.”
In Tuck, the Raiders found a replacement for departed defensive end Lamarr Houston. Some might say that the Raiders improved in that regard, given Tuck’s penchant for sacking the quarterback on a regular basis.
Houston notched six sacks last season and 16 over his four-year Raiders tenure. Tuck recorded 11 last season and 60 ½ during his nine-year Giants career.
Bringing in Tuck soothes some of the sting from the Raiders voiding a long-term contract with offensive lineman Rodger Saffold after the Raiders discovered a medical condition during Saffold’s physical that concerned them about moving forward.
The Raiders also are in the process of seeing whether they can land defensive tackle Justin Hatcher and outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley.
Hatcher and Woodley reached Alameda on Wednesday, and they still are in talks with Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie and others today.
Hatcher and Woodley are scheduled to fly to Nashville to meet with the Tennessee Titans tonight if they don’t reach agreement with the Raiders.

    excellent news
    thanks for the quick scoop

  • JV.

I’d take hatchers 11 sacks over woodleys 5

  • Goldie7

    For real man?

  • MachoManRandySavage

The world is round. The world likes soccer. Get used to it my man.

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

    REDEEM YOURSELF REGGIE!!!
    GET A. MACK!!!

  • Ted Stosterone

OK, same question: Are we better or worse than before FA started now? Just curious on the takes.

  • TrevJo

saying we missed out on the 4th rated pass rush DT, 6th? rated overall DT

  • Raidertalk

Dude, three major injuries; three years in row available to anyone who has google.

  • veni,vidi,vici

Whatever happened to Scottish Raider? Very informative viewpoints about our Oakland Raiders.

  • DKnight007

Tuck and Woodley are good vet pickups who are still relatively young at 31 and 29. They still have plenty left in tank and will work hard and added much needed leadership to the team. They are BEASTS also!

  • RaidingTexas

If Woodley just left 1220 a few hours ago, how the eff did he already get to Tennessee, not work out a deal there, then go back to Oakland and ink a deal?

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

    For real, man.

  • RediaR

Not all the time. Situationally as he played DT on passing downs for the NYG.

  • TrevJo

probably has one of those fancy facsimile machines

  • The Beeeeech Dawg

In a small cubicle at Kane & Associates, a broke old realtor is celebrating these signings by taking a huge krap in his pants

  • RediaR

Not what I want to happen. Just what I think will happen.

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

What? you expected an update from Cork?

  • RaidingTexas

Definitely getting better on defense – but still a lot of work to do. Offense, worse. There’s not LT right now.

  • jesusraiderjim

These guys on the radio need to get off Marks jock. I do not care that he stepped in and nixed this deal. It was the right thing to do. Reg needs to quit with the whole walking wounded bvll shvt

  • Goldie7

You are right Plunk! Good looking out!

  • JV.

Lol what our Docter told mark.

  • Davy Jones

Dakota pointed out the 5 day wait. Reggie might want to see how other things play out, keeping 11.5 or so in his back pocket hoping to drop it on Mack when he’s done with the D.

  • Ron69

Lamar Woodly is 265lbs, he is def replacing Hunter and play DE

I am sure you saw by now that Lamarr Woodley signed 2-year deal with #Raiders for 12 million. Told ya they were getting two pass rushers

  • BigBenRexor

Hopefully they will compliment each other. Woodley was at his best when James Harrison was on the other side.

  • Michael

    Dammit no hatcher huh

  • TrevJo

Yeah. I would love to have enough pass rushers to put 3 or 4 of them on the line on passing downs

  • PlunkforHOF

That was the guy saying all FA’s had already signed a day before it even began.

  • RaidingTexas

The flight time alone to Tenn, still seems a stretch. Either timing of tweets is way delayed, or he never left town.

  • Raideralex99

We lose a DE we sign a DE … Seriously what was accomplished? I see no difference.

  • Goldie7

Good we have Woodley too! A better day today in the Raiders domain.

  • Gdog

That would have been a grand slam… oh well. Nice day for Reggie, by Reggie standards.

  • JV.

Tennessee can’t compete with our cap…they prolly offered him a low ball deal.. Or a “normal” one not a hey we are in desperate need for talent deal like us.

  • 24

Who else is on the Raider radar at the moment?

  • Ted Stosterone

What’s the over/under on total number of new starters this season? Will be highest turnover in league?

  • inonewordraider

steve smith before the ravens grab him

  • Gdog

    Upgrade here hands down.

  • Soul^Patrol

Definatley helps with the sting of the Saffold drama.

    Solid moves for the D.

    Isaac Sapoaga??

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

Yeah. I posted once asking him if he was out there lurking.

He was and answered right away.

He’s spending less time on the blog in order to stay married.

I agree with you about his posts which is why I read them.

  • BigBenRexor

Probably the same. Tuck is immediatly better than Houston, but just a stop gap for now. Howard I don’t know much about, but the loss of Veldheer hurts us pretty bad.

  • RaiderDAV

I think its the same, someone here pointed out that compare to last year, players coming here are getting a 2 year deal. Me personally I think we are worst then last year, keeping in mind that this year there is Cap Space and what is there to be shown, 2 Defensive Players on probably their decline, an average OL, and this whole Saffold fiasco, wouldn’t it had been better if Houston & Veldheer were on board with today signings, then it would be a step up. But no crying over spilled milk, it is what it is.

  • AutumnThunderstorm

    better now
before Howard & Tuck signings we were worse as we lost Vehldeer & Houston who were very good football players
signing Howard and Tuck made us just as good if not better both proven, Tuck an all-pro with two Super Bowl rings; young teams need and respect that leadership
signing Woodley just made us better on defense
DMac and Sheets signings- pretty much the same as DMac and Jennings, less power more speed
Barnes is still a reliable football player on the OLine

  • Elliot

Come on let’s get one of the cro’s…..

  • ConnecticutRaider

Houston had a career high in sacks (6) tuck smashes that regularly… woodley had a “down” year & still got 5.

  • kenchun24

Repeat of last year…f-ing Groundhog Day for Reggie Raiders (RIP Harold Ramis)

  • Raidertalk

Raleigh Mackenzie can see no evil.

  • Raideralex99

Nothing was accomplished we lose players and sign their replacement …. where’s the depth?

  • Michael

Id love to see Steve smith and Alex Mack. Browns are now up against the cap so we could easily outbid them for mack

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

And we’l wind up missing on several phenomenal talents in the draft. As will every other team. Multiple times. Happens every year.

  • OldCharon

I couldn’t agree more. Well see how many games he plays as a ram, but way too high a risk IMO,
