Raiders sign top-notch DE to replace Houston

The Raiders helped redirect the spotlight from their waffling on their first high-profile move in free agency by signing veteran defensive end Justin Tuck on Thursday.
Tuck, 30, signed a two-year contract that calls for him to make as much as $11 million over the life of the deal, according to ESPN.
“Last week, I absolutely did not see it coming,” Tuck said in a conference call. “It wasn’t necessarily on my radar at that point in time, but everything accelerated pretty quickly, and I’m excited. I really am. I like the direction that this team is talking about going in, and I just want to be a part of it.”
In Tuck, the Raiders found a replacement for departed defensive end Lamarr Houston. Some might say that the Raiders improved in that regard, given Tuck’s penchant for sacking the quarterback on a regular basis.
Houston notched six sacks last season and 16 over his four-year Raiders tenure. Tuck recorded 11 last season and 60 ½ during his nine-year Giants career.
Bringing in Tuck soothes some of the sting from the Raiders voiding a long-term contract with offensive lineman Rodger Saffold after the Raiders discovered a medical condition during Saffold’s physical that concerned them about moving forward.
The Raiders also are in the process of seeing whether they can land defensive tackle Justin Hatcher and outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley.
Hatcher and Woodley reached Alameda on Wednesday, and they still are in talks with Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie and others today.
Hatcher and Woodley are scheduled to fly to Nashville to meet with the Tennessee Titans tonight if they don’t reach agreement with the Raiders.

    1. OLB/DE Mack
    2. OT Richardson
    3. RB J Hill
    4. CB C Davis

  • Avion Davis

Another good signing by RM? Who would have thought.

  • jesusraiderjim

pissing me off as we speak(type)

  • DKnight007

Agreed and he comes at a bargain price and he is still relatively young at 31

  • RaidingTexas

Oh well, only got two of the other guys. Still not a bad day!!!

  • Avion Davis

    What happened with Hatcher?

  • Raider_Riff

Me too. I woulda offered max money to Byrd. He’s the real deal.

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

This year is starting to resemble last year except that this year we’re signing ageing players that their previous team didn’t want to two year contracts instead of one.

  • RaidingTexas

The tennis guy? Man he’s fkn awful. WTF is wrong with 95.7? Digging their own grave.

  • RediaR

Probably both. We really are a “multiple” defense.

  • TrevJo

Ironically, Tuck played LDE for the Giants, and Houston played RDE for us, even though Houston is much bigger (more of an LDE build).

  • jesusraiderjim

    Ignore Re-run

  • Chino

Watch out for the ascension of mcgee

  • RaidingTexas

He just signed with Skins. Funny, the cowgirls mortal enemies. LOL

  • Elliot

I know Woodley 3-4 guy but at this point I will take it!

  • Raider-Fan-inKC

That question now makes me wonder if we’re going 3-4 this year

  • Guest

Woodly is a stud. Tuck and Woodley are definitely an upgrade. Now we need at least one front line tackle…

  • The Florida Pete

    Progress !!!

  • RaidingTexas

    Local Dallas media guy:

    Ben Rogers @BenRogers1m

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Jason Hatcher signs with the REDSKINS!!!! NOoooooooooooOoOOoOoooOooOoOoOooOOoOOoOooOoO!!!!!!

    LMAO

  • Chino

We need a pass rusher in the middle. And where are the defensive backs? Secret negotiations going on?

  • RediaR

Probably more than previously. I mean Houston played a bunch of OLB last year.

  • JV.

Offer jared Allen a huge deal…. Tuck said it himself he never had us on his radar and then ended up here…

Woodson last year said he wanted a contender and came here…

Allen might change his mind once he sees us making moves.

  • Raider_Riff

Yep. I doubt he is our RDE.

Were going to bring him in certain situations.

We wont go 3-4. We will shift things around a lot tho.

  • R8erEduc8er

    Skins signed him.

  • seymour bush

McKenzie has certainly helped the pass rushing deficiency with Tuck and Woodley. Still an F Grade for the free agent aspect of 2014 tho.

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

at that rate of progression, we’ll make the playoffs in……………………

  • inonewordraider

the year we actually go 3-4?
Tuck could play 3-4 DE, Woodley Moore Roach Burris at lb’s?
    yea I know, probably not

  • Breaking_Black

    Who is Woodley replacing?

  • Turtle named Mack

This one bothers me the least.

  • Dakota

Any Alex Mack news….last thing I heard was that the Colts were interested in him. Most teams would not sign him to an offer sheet because it ties up your cap space for 5 days….we don’t have that problem.

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

I can’t count that high without a drink.

  • No one claimed Reg. was smart

C´mon. Tuck & Woodley are an upgrade or Houston and who ever played the other DE position. I’ll give Reg a solid B so far

  • SilverandBlack666

If Reggie can get Vince Wilfork we might have a stout enough D-Line to make up for the lack of talent in the secondary.

  • JV.

He’s the browns until another team steps in and matches the tag..

  • RediaR

Not fully 3-4 like the Steelers. It seems Tarver likes versatility and to switch it up with the situation and the feeling of the game.

I hope he can get some more starters and depth for it to work out.

  • AutumnThunderstorm

So what will Crawford get for his #91 from Tuck.
Tuck is not a former Raider so I doubt they will just give it to him.

  • JV.

    Tuck is wearing # 99

  • Turtle named Mack

    True

  • kenchun24

That’s still how I feel…Hatcher (if Reg can get him) is the only guy that raises Reggie’s grade from F to F+ for me.

*edit nevermind Hatcher to the Skins

  • SilverandBlack666

We still have to use our #5 pick on a LT and we could have used it on a QB.

  • Dakota

Well, he is a free agent that can sign an offer sheet with any team, and then the Browns can match that offer and keep him.

  • Chino

Pat sims and Antonio smith the highest rated DTs available

  • Davy Jones

    Quit claiming Reg was smart.

  • RediaR

Ah, memories of past aging pass rusher vets.

  • AutumnThunderstorm

    other way around
he’s anyone’s until Cleveland matches the offer

  • Breaking_Black

Maybe Tuck will let him wear one of his rings for a couple of minutes.

  • Dakota

Why would he want to go from the Patriots to the Raiders????? Just $$$$$

  • inonewordraider

    hatcher signing with redskins

  • Chino

Throw vance walker in there as well

  • No one claimed Reg. was smart

I’m one solid FA signing away from returning to MachoManRandySavage. But I gots to keep to pressure on ol Reg!
