Raiders defensive ways in free agency continue in earnest

The Raiders added two more potential starters for their defense Friday with the signings of defensive lineman Antonio Smith and cornerback Tarell Brown.
Those signings combine with the addition of defensive end Justin Tuck and linebacker LaMarr Woodley on Thursday. All four are potential starters for a defensive unit depleted by the defection of free agents such as defensive end Lamarr Houston, defensive tackle Vance Walker and cornerback Tracy Porter, as well as others still unsigned.
Smith posted five sacks for the Houston Texans last season, his 10th in the NFL. He spent his first five seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, the past five with the Texans.
Smith signed a contract that has the potential to net him $9 million over two seasons. Brown signed a one-year contract for $3.5 million, all of it guaranteed.
Brown, 29, spent all seven of his NFL seasons with the 49ers. He played in 100 games during that time, including 47 starts. He started 10 games last season.
Brown gives the Raiders a reliable option as a starter opposite second-year player D.J. Hayden, who played mostly as an extra defensive back last season before an injury sidelined him for the latter part of the season.
Mike Jenkins and Porter started at cornerback for the Raiders last season. Porter signed with the Washington Redskins. Jenkins remains unsigned.

xxCodeinexx…………sounds like someone with high standards and quality judgement.

  • jesusraiderjim

    Quite.

  • R8erEduc8er

Agreed. He’s also a great pass protector for the QB and has great hands out of the backfield. Exactly what you want in a 3rd down back.

Out of Manziel, Bridge, Bortles, Carr 2 of the 4, if not 3 of the 4 will have better careers than RGME

  • truepaiN

He can throw TDs though, that’s all that matters.

  • jesusraiderjim

or a pill popping freak #CodeDumbazz

  • NYCRaider

I used to think he was a great receiever out of the backfield. Last 2 years too many drops

  • the swanky socialite dr robert

But OTHER than that, he’s awesome.

    He’s fast u know.

  • Dakota

    zzzzz

  • the swanky socialite dr robert

Solomon Wilcots said he’s a 3rd down back. I agree.

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

Yup, and lazy with his feet in bounds along the sidelines.
He has above average hands. Not great hands.

  • 0ak R8rs

@DConnollyNFL: The media is hilarious when it comes to the #Raiders and it never gets old, either they don’t do enough or they make all the wrong moves!

I like this Connolly guy. And he’s obviously a Raider fan.

  • R8erEduc8er

Outside of Houston, I think the rest just weren’t offered a contract or were low-balled.

  • the swanky socialite dr robert

Word is that MJD is a possibility.

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

I banged a stripper with that stage name for awhile.

  • Michael

So Fitzpatrick I see was cut. He may be the best FA qb available. And that’s depressing haha

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

    Market street Cinema?

  • the swanky socialite dr robert

Pretty sure 40% of ALL strippers have used that name at some point.

  • Dakota

Ford, McFadden, Schaub and MJD all had lisfranc injuries in the last two or three years, and none of them have been the same.

  • NYCRaider

good call about the feet. Couple of missed tDs because of his feet along the sidelines

  • DJ Johnny

Bring in Sanchez and they can both run into linemen’s butts all day.

  • the swanky socialite dr robert

Well it definitely slowed Schaub down.

  • Blackholepriest

If they were to use Reece as a feature back. Then use DMC as a 3rd down utility player. This would be a very difficult offense to stop. They flex both out but just don’t give him the workload everyone always clamored for. The mistake with DMC is he makes huge plays then the coaches over use him. Use Reece in that role……..period

  • Dakota

He rolled out a lot prior to that injury…..hasn’t been the same since.

  • TrevJo

Wow yeah. I’m not a huge fan but I like him better than the other FAs. I guess I missed where the Titans signed Whitehurst, don’t think they should expect too much from him though.

  • RediaR

    Design a buttfumblerooskie.

  • Michael

Yep same thing for the draft. We take a qb “I dunno what they’re thinking here they let veldheer walk they needed to draft a sure thing like Matthews or Robinson!” Ok so we draft a tackle “this team is in desperate need of playmakers, I don’t understand how they pass on a guy like Watkins!” Ok so we take Watkins “well that’s great but who is gonna throw to whom? Raiders mess up again!” Ok so we draft a qb….

  • RediaR

The draft isn’t pretty in that regard.

  • Myopinion

Crazy thing is the year he got hurt he was at MVP level.

  • Dakota

Missed out on Pettigrew…must have been too young with too much upside for Reggie.
Missed out on Scott Chandler as well.
    SMH

  • truepaiN

McGloin has better numbers. Schaub/Vick are the only guys I’d consider.

  • 0tt0

i cant stand the media…but when they are right they are right……..I like the signings over the last couple days but in reality im not sure we are better…….we got some big name older guys on 2 year contract……would have much preferred young guys on 5 year contracts…to me thats building the team……this looks more like reggie trying to save his job…but ill take it

  • RediaR

They gave Whitehurst a millions dollars per year, per start he’s had in his career.

  • Michael

Yea, kinda like mcgloin more than any of the people available.

  • RediaR

Good. He’s pretty bad at football.

  • the swanky socialite dr robert

    Clipboard Jesus.

  • Blackholepriest

He can stay play at a high level. They should’ve used Bush to beat up the defense sand used to dmc to kill ‘em. But they didn’t know how to him or them……..period

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

And you people tried to fight me about that last offseason in regards to D-Mac.
    Nooooooo…..it was the ZBS!!! Hogwash
    Go Lakers

  • 0tt0

i like fitz better than shaub or vick

  • RediaR

Throws pick sixes for our sins.

  • TrevJo

McGloin’s career passer rating is better. Fitzpatrick’s passer rating last year (and the three previous years) was better than McGloin’s rating last year.
Anyway all I’m saying is I like Fitzpatrick better than Vick or Schaub and especially better than Freeman or Sanchez or Pryor.

  • disqus_yeZNegncsV

Wait. Jennings found holes. DMac seemed always to run up his lineman’s backside. He seems only to be able to run through huge holes, no ability to see to his left or right, no ability to stutter step as a hole might be opening. Nah.

  • 0tt0

im not so sure about that……i think the injuries have made him a timid runner….i think hes done

  • RediaR

None of it makes one feel good.

  • Dakota

Hope is a difficult thing to give up on!

  • NYCRaider

    agreed

  • RediaR

Older stopgaps while he builds through the draft. The trick is drafting well and we don’t know that will happen.

  • 0tt0

i think mccloins sample is low….if he has a larger sample size i think your going to see his number go lower as Ds adjust

  • NYCRaider

IDK, im high on Rivera. IMO RM needs to bring in some CBs quick.
