Raiders free agent frenzy continues, with three more vets on way for visits

Veteran defensive end Antonio Smith and veteran offensive tackle Michael Oher are the latest players on their way to Alameda to meet with Raiders officials about the prospect of wearing silver and black next season.
Smith, 32, started 117 games during his 10-year NFL career, five seasons each with the Arizona Cardinals and Houston Texans. He recorded five sacks last season and 41 ½ during his career.
Oher, 27, started all 80 regular-season games during his first five NFL seasons, all with the Baltimore Ravens.
The Raiders still are in search for a left offensive tackle after losing Jared Veldheer to the Cardinals in free agency and voiding a deal with Rodger Saffold as a result of a failed physical.
Oher played left and right tackle for the Ravens. It’s unclear whether the Raiders envision Oher as a candidate to replace Veldheer.
The Raiders also are taking a look at veteran offensive tackle Donald Penn, who started every game for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers the past six seasons and 108 of 112 the past seven seasons.
Oher is best known, perhaps, for being the inspiration for the smash-hit movie “The Blind Side.” He was a first-round pick of the Ravens in the 2009 NFL draft and helped them win the Super Bowl two seasons ago.

anyone know our cap situation (approximately) after the signings?

  • r8ter4evr

Christians always give second chances it’s what the cross stands for foregiveness

  • RTF916

Notice all of the people rooting against Reggie are hoping for Incognito? Gee, I wonder why. They know he’s a locker room time bomb. They want the team to lose.

  • 0ak R8rs

Both guys we signed were way better in 2012 than 2013. Have to see which year was the true indicator. How’s that?

  • Dakota

McFadden says just watch and see!

  • thebumpnrun

Pat Sims was nonexistent for most of the year. No thanks

  • Davy Jones

    Agreed.

  • RTF916

The Oakland Raiders are not a Christian organization.

  • DJ Johnny

One thing I notice is every one of these FA’s Reggie’s bringing in played on winning playoff teams.

Used to winning. That can’t hurt.

  • ConnecticutRaider

i believe we have about 52 left

  • DanfromVegas

A solid and reliable starter making 4.5 million is expensive?

  • Gdog

    SUPER BOWL BABY!!

    Happy now?

  • 0ak R8rs

    That’s simply not true.

  • JV.

@BairCSN: Hate to temporarily temper the mood, but LT Donald Penn has concluded his visit. No signed contract. Has other suitors.

Are you Kidding… Reggie’s got Raleigh pushing the gurneys out the rehab center as we speak….

  • disqus_yeZNegncsV

i think rm wants bridgewater–big line.

tink someone else will take him before he reaches the fifth spot, even someone trading up?

    KEYWORD: “temporarily”

    Penn will sign d/w

  • RaidO

    no Penn then

  • canadianraider

    thanks Connecticut…cheers

  • SR Raider

spent about $9 today, so probably 42-45 remaining

  • MEX_GHOST

    Hey lucky O!!

  • JV.

Smith played on a line with watt who also had a down year compared to his 2012.. Never know.

  • Avion Davis

I didn’t catch his pro day. Did he light it up or was he mediocre?

  • r8ter4evr

It was ugly Tuesday night I know I was quite upset as a fan since 1971 but RM has done a great job the last few days and deserves credit from us fans

  • RTF916

Bair’s almost as big of an idiot as the Reggie haters here. Reggie is not going to overpay these guys. The know he has a ton of cap space, and are trying to take him to the cleaners. Every player we signed had other suitors.

  • Dakota

Did Reggie ever appear on 95.7 today?

  • DanfromVegas

Gdog, it doesn’t have to be one extreme or the other. There have been bad moves, and good moves. It’s hard to argue that our defense and our O-line aren’t starting to look more formidable, at least on paper, than we’ve had in many a year.

  • JV.

Unless he gets more money and longer then a 2 year deal like all of these.

  • RaidO

More like $50 mil….as of this AM it was $59.9 mil

  • Raider O

What’s up bro. You are not as lucky as me, but I still like you. lol

  • http://ggeden.blogspot.com/ GG

    On a spoof segment

  • DanfromVegas

That’s only one season removed. They may be busts for all I know, but they are solid pickups, and they are moderately priced, leaving lots of room to keep filling up the gaps.

  • TrevJo

    pro day schmo day

  • JV.

    For anyone who can answer.

Did they announce brown was visiting or did it come out of no where???

  • Elliot

NFL NETWORK just makes me laugh ravens signing Smith like they got Calvin johnson

  • JV.

Run game…. DT aren’t known for sacks… Luck if you have one that can. Huge player vs run did great things.

  • Avion Davis

It came out of the blue!

  • RTF916

Most of these reporters that cover the Raiders wanted the Niner job, still do. They’re hating on the Raiders as a tryout for their next gig.

  • DJ Johnny

    Pro Bowl 2011.

  • 0ak R8rs

Came out of nowhere to me. I only knew about Thomas and browners scheduled visit. Browner visit obviously isn’t happening…

  • TrevJo

Tuck, Woodley, McFadden, and Howard all missed the playoffs in 2013.
I don’t see that as a bad thing though. Better than grabbing system guys who all of a sudden suck because they aren’t on a great team anymore.

  • Gdog

So what exactly did you EXPECT after the Saffold meltdown news? “Oh gee golly whiz…. every team does this…?”

  • JV.

Most of these guys have been there for years…. They cover Bay Area sports so aka both teams.

  • Jon Train

    Woodley Tuck Wilfork Smith Moore
    Burnett? Roach

    Sign C Wood
    Sign Wilfork

  • r8ter4evr

Leadership, RM has a plan. I can’t believe I typed that but it looks to be true good job RM

  • DanfromVegas

I wasn’t thrilled with the first day either, and I almost lost faith when we let Jennings go, but things are in flux and won’t be settled for a while. I’m not being positive for the sake of being positive. I know I have absolutely no control of the process the Raiders are undertaking, but in spite of our record, I’ve seen some fundamental improvements that I think will pay dividends in the near future.

  • disqus_yeZNegncsV

    east coast bias

  • TrevJo

    All these? You mean both?

  • Ron69

Brown was good enought to start with the niners, he is an instant starter here.
    Smith will start at UT

  • SR Raider
