McFadden officially back with Raiders for seventh season

The Raiders on Saturday finalized a one-year contract with running back Darren McFadden that keeps the 2008 first-round draft pick in a silver-and-black uniform for a seventh season.
McFadden, 26, averaged only 3.3 yards per carry last season, marking the second straight season he finished with that figure and 2 yards or so shy of the 5.4 and 5.2 he posted in 2010 and 11, respectively.
He missed six games last season, which resulted in the Raiders turning to Rashad Jennings as their primary back the latter part of the season.
“I am really excited to be back in Silver and Black,” McFadden said. “There is no place I’d rather be. I want to prove to the team that drafted me that I am a top running back in this league, and I really want to help this team win.”
Given how Jennings outperformed McFadden at every turn, it seemed likely that the Raiders would re-sign Jennings and let McFadden depart via free agency.
Instead, the Raiders re-signed McFadden and let Jennings sign with the New York Giants without making much of a push to bring him back.
Overall, McFadden has missed 29 games during his six-year Raiders career, and he failed to develop into the elite player the Raiders envisioned when they selected McFadden with the fourth pick of the NFL draft out of Arkansas.
Only once has McFadden rushed for more than 707 yards in a season. That came in 2010, when he amassed 1,157 yards and caught a career-high 47 passes in only 13 games.
He has yet to play in more than 13 games in any NFL season, yet the Raiders are confident that he has the potential to regain the form he showed in 2010-11.
McFadden is regarded as the lead back for now, with second-year player Latavius Murray and third-year players Kory Sheets and Jeremy Stewart in the mix for backup spots

Not generally. They end up good mentor backups tho.

Rehab takes time, ask Kurt Warner.

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

He’s the best vet QB out there. It’s worry what Reggie will give up.

    Don’t have a 5th. Prob a 4th and a conditional 2015 pick.

    I hate you, James Harden!!

  • Raider_Riff

Exactly. If he doesnt make it thru camp and preseason 100% healthy, he know’s he’ll be cut immediately.

    No leash.

Reasons not to trade for Schaub:
-He’s not good. His confidence is shot and his past success has to do with having a great OL, great WR, and great running game.
-$10M base salary this year, $12.5M next year, $14.5M the following year. Way more than he is worth. If we renegotiate his deal we will have to make it worth his while… in other words if we bring his total money down then it will cost us in the form of guaranteed money which means potential dead money in the future.
-They will cut him if they can’t find a trade.
-He’s 32 years old, up there enough that he won’t be a long-term solution even if he does get better.
-We’re helping Houston in trading for him.

    No Schaub…

    Fan fantasy.

  • J Hill

Really, I’d wait until he got cut.

We all know it’s going to happen.

But we have to spend this $ somewhere so I can see us taking on the salary.

  • SilverNBlackPA

The thing that would frustrate me most about a QB trade: it would signal we aren’t taking a QB at #5….it would be a developmental guy like Carr.

  • 0ak R8rs

Schaub for Pryor. BOOM! Take care of two problems at once.

  • EDWARD TEACH

Could be a combination. Schaub would start until such time as the rookie was ready. Reggie has intimated on more than one occasion that he would prefer not to throw a rookie out there right away.

  • EMRaiders

I like Schaub, I began liking him when he threw that int to Huff in the endzone the game the week Al died. That was awesome!

  • DanfromVegas

If we could get him on the cheap, why not? I wouldn’t give up anything lower than a 6th rounder for him though, and I wouldn’t pay him the $10 mil he’s due.

  • SilverNBlackPA

Here’s the problem with win-or-be-fired seasons….the GM is trying to save his job and does stuff like this

  • 0ak R8rs

Manziel sucks. Bortles has a scathing scouting report come out this morning. Poor footwork, mechanics, slow delivery, not looking off DBS. The works. I don’t want a QB in the 1st. Not at all. None worth it IMO.

  • EDWARD TEACH

There are idiot overreacting fans in every city in the NFL. We certainly have our share.

  • DanfromVegas

I’ll take DMAC at $100k guaranteed over Jennings at $3.5 mil guaranteed. We could pick up another back with that money.

  • 0ak R8rs

That happens when you throw pick 6s in 5 straight games. He was solid of not spectacular before last year. We could use some solid around here.

  • EMRaiders

hopefully that means that they are sweeting the deal by either taking a 6th or lower, or throwing in another player in the deal.

  • 0ak R8rs

How about a blockbuster an we take their other high priced unhappy player? Andre Johnson.

  • EMRaiders

then we would for sure be drafting a LT with the 5.

  • SilverNBlackPA

    New post

  • TrevJo

Pass on a QB in the draft because we have Matt Schaub? That makes no sense.

  • EMRaiders

I agree. I’m just saying that’s what RM would do.

  • 0ak R8rs

Pass is the best thing we can do. Garrapolo and Carr in the second have a better chance than any of the top 3 in the first IMO.

  • disqus_yeZNegncsV

I don’t trade anything for Matt Schaub unless I get to give him a physical first and let him throw a few balls for me. I don’t know if that’s allowed, but even though I don’t *think* that’s what happened to him last year, there’s always this little nagging thought that when a qb throws a rash of picks it’s because he’s modified his motion to protect something. The more likely explanation is that everything around him was bad and he was bad right along with everything else…then he and teammates press and when you press, all hell breaks loose.
Still, a nagging little thought needs to be addressed…

Newman(Seinfeld) was killed in a tractor trailer accident. Woah

  • disqus_yeZNegncsV

    Not necessarily so.

  • PlunkforHOF

And… Flynn was one. Stop with your man-love.

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

He may not have a problem but if he does, it isn’t physical so much as mental.
In any event, he’s the best vet QB going.
You should worry more about what Reggie will give up.

  • PlunkforHOF

    Whoah..

  • disqus_yeZNegncsV

    Jeeez.

  • DanfromVegas

The Jennings move is what I like least about this FA period so far, but it shouldn’t be too hard to find a bruiser than can move the pile. Remember Wheatley? It shouldn’t be too hard to find a back like that, but Mcfadden is definitely not the bruiser that we need to punish the defense. I do like #20 at $100K though.

  • the swanky socialite dr robert

    Better than Pryor. The end.

  • Raider_Riff

This is a likely scenario. One I’d put my money on.

One caveat tho… Reggie and DA are on thin ice. They cant survive a rough start to the season. Mark has already told DA that he’s not afraid to fire a coach mid-season. And Sparano is waiting in the wings to take over.

If Shaub is the starter, how long is his leash with the Black Hole? I doubt he makes it 3 or 4 games before the boo’ing is unbearable. Especially with a hot new rookie on the sideline. Raider fan is notoriously drunk and petty. We like shiny new things. Nobody is going to give Shaub much of a chance. A few dropped passes by our bum WRs and the fans will be all over Shaub.

He mentally starts to collapse, and we start off 1-5, and DA is getting fired.

I say this because it’s almost a better scenario for the staff if they have a rookie out there and get the benefit of the doubt from ownership.

I dunno. DA is in rough spot. The sensible option (starting Shaub while rookie marinates) is maybe not something he has the leash to get away with.

Jennings has injury concerns. We were lucky he stayed so healthy for us.

Would you have tried to match the Giants’ offer? I think they paid a lot.

  • Raider_Riff

The players hear the boo’s. It can get to them. It clearly got to Shaub last year. Sanchez before that. Your boy Flynnch etc.

  • Raider_Riff

Seriously. There is no way they keep him.

What are the possible reasons for a trade???
