Report: Raiders in ‘serious’ talks with Texans about trade for Schaub

The Raiders are in “serious” talks with the Houston Texans about a trade for veteran quarterback Matt Schaub, according to a report by a Houston radio station.
Schaub, 32, is the kind of experienced quarterback the Raiders are looking for while they continue to search for a long-term solution.
Journeyman Trent Edwards, fourth-year player Terrelle Pryor and second-year player Matt McGloin are the only quarterbacks on the Raiders roster.
Coach Dennis Allen and general manager Reggie McKenzie said in recent months that they aren’t sure if the Raiders quarterback of the future is on their roster.
McKenzie added that he is inclined to go with a veteran in 2014 as his starter, while a younger quarterback learns under the veteran.
That younger option might be Pryor or McGloin, or it could be a quarterback that the Raiders select in the NFL draft in May. The Raiders hold the No. 5 pick in a draft that features numerous attractive quarterbacks.
Schaub still has three years left on a contract that calls for him to earn $10 million in base salary in 2014, $12.5 million in ’15 and $14.5 million in ‘16. The Raiders are flush with salary cap space and can accommodate such a salary.
Schaub is fresh from his worst season since he became a starter in 2007. He had 10 touchdown passes and 14 passes intercepted last season. That prompted coach Gary Kubiak to bench Schaub.
McKenzie traded for veteran quarterback Matt Flynn last offseason and anointed him the starter. Pryor beat out Flynn in training camp, and the Raiders released Flynn early in the season after Flynn started one game.
In other news, linebacker Rob Jackson and defensive end Alex Carrington are scheduled to visit the Raiders in the coming days as the Raiders continue their wide-ranging search to revamp their defense.
Jackson, 28, played mostly special teams and as a reserve linebacker during his six seasons with the Washington Redskins.
However, he also flashed as a potential starter when he filled in for 14 games in 2012.
The Raiders are set at all three linebacker spots, with 2013 starters Kevin Burnett, Nick Roach and Sio Moore under contract for 2014. The Raiders also added veteran linebacker LaMarr Woodley via free agency Thursday.
Jackson played in only 10 games his first three seasons. He appeared in 44 of 48 games the past three seasons. Fourteen of his 15 starts came in ’12.
Already, the Raiders signed four players that are expected to compete for starting jobs next season.
Defensive end Justin Tuck, defensive lineman Antonio Smith and cornerback Tarell Brown are the others besides Woodley.
Carrington, 26, started nine of the 44 games he played for the Buffalo Bills the past four seasons. He played in only three games last season and recorded 10 tackles.

This site will go crazy, but remember Jim Plunkett…

    Really? Really?

Schaub as a FA = Sure
Schaub on a trade = Fail

  • RediaR

Unless we send McFadden and/or Pryor to Houston in the deal.

  • The Florida Pete

Schaub… if they bring in Schaub, they gotta trade Pryor…

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

We don’t have a 5th to give up, really hope we don’t give up a 4th or higher.
Think if we do make the deal, it will include a 6th this year and some conditional pick in 2015.
And then Reggie will restructure his contract, turn it into a guaranteed bonus, and he will blow out his knee in the preseason.

  • SilverNBlackPA

They’re going to trade for Schaub, trade back in the first and draft Derek Carr aren’t they?

  • 0ak R8rs

Of course. Fitzpatrick is out there. No interest from Reggie in him?

  • 0ak R8rs

Yep. Most likely that would be the plan.

  • The Florida Pete

I’m thinking just taking his contract off their hands is all the compensation they should expect…

  • SilverNBlackPA

Oh my god. No no no no no no no

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

Carrington blew out his knee last year and went on IR.
    Our type of guy

  • RediaR

They should take Pryor and McFadden if they want extra picks.

  • IAmAlwaysWrong

Ryan Fitz might be a better player at half the price. how about a 1-year “prove it” deal ??

  • jesusraiderjim

    Reggie specials.

  • The Florida Pete

    I like it !!!!

  • jesusraiderjim

    Flip a coin

  • the swanky socialite dr robert

Actually it’s a great way to get value.

  • IAmAlwaysWrong

Fitzpatrick always shreds us. McGloin outplayed Schaub last year …

  • the swanky socialite dr robert

    And Gannon

  • Marley Bob

    Worth a look.

  • Dakota

On the plus side, schaub gave his coach a stroke last year…..

  • SilverNBlackPA

Fitzpatrick and Schaub are basically a push at this point and Fitz would cost only money

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

    LOL
    Go Lakers

  • SilverNBlackPA

    Lmao

  • IAmAlwaysWrong

Reggie is a “play it safe” GM. he doesn’t have the balls or the job security to draft a QB 5th overall and start him Week 1 or trade up with Rams at 2nd overall and grab the #1 QB on his board. veteran = zzzzzzzzzzz

  • IAmAlwaysWrong

    Go Heat!! #3peat

  • the swanky socialite dr robert

Mcg could seriously be part of the deal. Going to play for his former coach.

    And what’s not to like?

32 year old qb who has had multiple 90+ rated 4k+ years.

This is a GOOD qb. A few bad picks on a team that completely melted down doesn’t change that.

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

Not a chance they take back salaries and guys on 1 year deals.
They would rather have a 7th round pick then take those 2.

  • Marley Bob

    LOL

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

    Nice one.

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

You and your “90 QB ratings”
    I heard this last offseason…………..

  • RediaR

Last year is not a good sign. It’s just not. He was dreadful.

  • IAmAlwaysWrong

wishing ill will on Dennis Allen, again??

  • 0ak R8rs

Guess we knew this already? I just saw:

@AdamSchefter: Now Giants officially have signed former Seahawks CB Walter Thurmond to a one-year, $3.5M deal.

  • IAmAlwaysWrong

    peanuts! what the heck, Reggie!?!?

  • Marley Bob

    Ok.
So that’s what all the cap space is for…..a trade for Matt Schaub.
    Building the right way!.

  • Raider_Riff

Seriously. How did we get outbid there. SMH.

  • SlashNHack

But he tanked in the clutch during his “good” years and let his star studded team down

  • IAmAlwaysWrong

dump Carson Palmer and get him back 1 year later = “re-building” ??

  • Raider_Riff

Reggie sure does make it easy to pile on.

  • 0ak R8rs

Yea. Seems like we could have done better than that. A lot better.

  • R8erEduc8er

    Lol wrong, but funny!

  • SlashNHack

You might be right….sounds like a Muffin Man move

  • Raider_Riff

    and Flynnch

  • RediaR

Players sometimes just hit a wall where their game is just not what it used to be. He MAY have hit that wall.

  • SilverNBlackPA

I’m not sure I could be convinced he has any coherent plan for the future at this point. It’s total desperation save the job mode

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

Maybe we can go back to the WCO/ZBS just for Schaubb.
I don’t believe he has ever started in any other offense.

  • Marley Bob

    We’re saving for Schaub!!

  • the swanky socialite dr robert

The definition of a good qb. It’s historical fact.

  • the swanky socialite dr robert

The entire team was. Things went crazy there.
