Report: Raiders in ‘serious’ talks with Texans about trade for Schaub

The Raiders are in “serious” talks with the Houston Texans about a trade for veteran quarterback Matt Schaub, according to a report by a Houston radio station.
Schaub, 32, is the kind of experienced quarterback the Raiders are looking for while they continue to search for a long-term solution.
Journeyman Trent Edwards, fourth-year player Terrelle Pryor and second-year player Matt McGloin are the only quarterbacks on the Raiders roster.
Coach Dennis Allen and general manager Reggie McKenzie said in recent months that they aren’t sure if the Raiders quarterback of the future is on their roster.
McKenzie added that he is inclined to go with a veteran in 2014 as his starter, while a younger quarterback learns under the veteran.
That younger option might be Pryor or McGloin, or it could be a quarterback that the Raiders select in the NFL draft in May. The Raiders hold the No. 5 pick in a draft that features numerous attractive quarterbacks.
Schaub still has three years left on a contract that calls for him to earn $10 million in base salary in 2014, $12.5 million in ’15 and $14.5 million in ‘16. The Raiders are flush with salary cap space and can accommodate such a salary.
Schaub is fresh from his worst season since he became a starter in 2007. He had 10 touchdown passes and 14 passes intercepted last season. That prompted coach Gary Kubiak to bench Schaub.
McKenzie traded for veteran quarterback Matt Flynn last offseason and anointed him the starter. Pryor beat out Flynn in training camp, and the Raiders released Flynn early in the season after Flynn started one game.
In other news, linebacker Rob Jackson and defensive end Alex Carrington are scheduled to visit the Raiders in the coming days as the Raiders continue their wide-ranging search to revamp their defense.
Jackson, 28, played mostly special teams and as a reserve linebacker during his six seasons with the Washington Redskins.
However, he also flashed as a potential starter when he filled in for 14 games in 2012.
The Raiders are set at all three linebacker spots, with 2013 starters Kevin Burnett, Nick Roach and Sio Moore under contract for 2014. The Raiders also added veteran linebacker LaMarr Woodley via free agency Thursday.
Jackson played in only 10 games his first three seasons. He appeared in 44 of 48 games the past three seasons. Fourteen of his 15 starts came in ’12.
Already, the Raiders signed four players that are expected to compete for starting jobs next season.
Defensive end Justin Tuck, defensive lineman Antonio Smith and cornerback Tarell Brown are the others besides Woodley.
Carrington, 26, started nine of the 44 games he played for the Buffalo Bills the past four seasons. He played in only three games last season and recorded 10 tackles.

    You loved Flynn.
    Enough said.

100% agree, and why on that reason alone we should have cleaned house.
Reggie is trying to save his million dollar paychecks.

  • SlashNHack

Knapp is not available now though ??? :-)

  • DanfromVegas

Man, Schaub has been a good QB for most of his career, but he isn’t any better than Carson Palmer, so he isn’t anywhere near an elite level QB. I don’t know the specifics, but this would seem to be a terrible use of cap space, unless we are dumping bad contracts, and unless his contract is negotiated, this is a bad move by Reggie. It has a Matt Flynn stink to it.

  • IAmAlwaysWrong

that’s right! Brisiel will be happy. maybe Owen Daniels comes here?

  • the swanky socialite dr robert

Ur lying. I never said I loved him. I said he was better than Pryor. Other people ran with it.

  • RediaR

Still. I don’t want to give anything up for that. He’d just be a stopgap anyway.

  • Marley Bob

Schaub and Brisiel reunion, just make it happen Reggie!

  • IAmAlwaysWrong

watch Reggie give Houston a 2nd or 3rd rounder … DOH!

  • IAmAlwaysWrong

    Antonio Smith, too

  • DanfromVegas

Superbowl Champion vs. reconstruction team? i’m sure he would have come to us if only Reggie had thrown money at him.

  • RediaR

It would be a terrible use of anything given in return.

  • Marley Bob

    Get Knapp on the phone…

  • Dakota

Reggie, I now realize you are not very bright, so let me walk you through this….the texans will save $14 million actual dollars (unless some of that is guaranteed) and $4 million in cap space if they cut schaub….so keep up now, they will cut him. Then you have an open spot for a starter, and a lot of cap space. You could land schaub for $6 to $8 million per, and not wasted draft assets.

You got the plan? Okay bud, not get back to looking at third tier guys to fill the roster.

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

There seems to be rumors of McGloin.

  • Avion Davis

Personally I’ll be really disappointed of Shaub is our top FA aquisition. How much is this gonna cost us Draft pick wise?

  • IAmAlwaysWrong

how many games did the G-Men win last year? didn’t they start like 0-6 ??

  • RediaR

    Hopefully for a prank call.

  • 0ak R8rs

Hadn’t thought about the dump Palmer pick up Schaub a year later thing. Not liking this as much now. At least Schaub has won a playoff game in his career I guess……

  • Raidman (Formerly Veldiman)

Well, I guess it’s sure to happen now….remember how Cork is with his prognostications…

    Steve Corkran ‏@CorkOnTheNFL 6m

Can’t see Raiders trading for Texans QB Matt Schaub and taking on $10 million base salary for a guy that had 10 TDs, 14 ints. in 2013.

  • IAmAlwaysWrong

HAHA – Yes! what is Reggie’s “plan” again? anybody know?

  • DanfromVegas

Good point. Still, NY is a very appealing place to go.

  • Marley Bob

You need to start thinking more dude, with all due respect….you often start defending a Reggie move, then you end up lamenting it.

  • RediaR

As a FA on a decent deal with no guarantee to start over a young guy(s), sure.
On a trade for anything other than McFadden and Pryor, it is a step backwards.

  • Marley Bob

    A billboard please

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

We need a quarterback. We need a veteran quarterback.
    Schaub? Sanchez? Freeman? FDK?
Out of that bunch I’ll take Schaub.

  • r8ter4evr

We have had good luck bringing in guys like Plunkett Hostetler Gannon who all had some success, who knows maybe a new environement is what Schaub needs but I hope Obrien doesn’t want the Irishman

  • RediaR

    But not on a trade.

  • 0ak R8rs

What move have I defended that was bad? This one didn’t even happen yet.

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

Schaub’s only playoff win came against the Bengals and Hue Jackson’s coached secondary.

  • IAmAlwaysWrong

i’ll take Fitzpatrick or Vick for free…thanks

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

That’s the Catch 22 since Reggie is negotiating.

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

6th round pick this year, conditional pick in 2015.

  • Marley Bob

    Just hope it doesn’t !

  • Avion Davis

This is arguably a worse move than both Hue’s trade for Palmer and the “Saffold-madness”

  • DanfromVegas

If Reggie’s grand plan is to sign Matt Schaub, I won’t be able to defend anything that is being done. A solid started at best, he is not and cannot be Reggie’s Marquee move this off season.

  • r8ter4evr

True on that Fitzpatrick has had some stellar games, plus don’t want to lose Mcgloin

  • Marley Bob

    Schaub at 10 million?.
    No way.

  • the swanky socialite dr robert

    About that

  • r8ter4evr

The money is huge trade up for Johnny depending on how the first 4 picks go

  • DanfromVegas

I’m not liking it either. I especially don’t like any implied connection to McGloin. I’ll the the fiery red headed scrapper from Scranton any day over Schaub.

  • Ian

Hopefully nothing more than a 4th rounder. If its more, then we are getting fleeced.

  • the swanky socialite dr robert

I would like to point out that I was the first guy to say we would get Schaub during the season months ago.

    Thank u thank u.

  • RediaR

Trading a young QB, who is at least a potential long term backup, for a 32 year old stop gap coming off of a season so horrendous there is a 99% chance he’ll be released anyway, is just dumb. McGloin would probably start 8 of the games anyway if they were together.

  • Raidman (Formerly Veldiman)

Bringing up our past success is great, except keep in mind we have continuity from last year for our coaching staff. Remember the debacle with QB’s last year? From Wilson to Flynn to TP to McG and back to TP? I’m thinking Montana in his prime would have an issue here with us.

  • r8ter4evr

But the dough? Can it be restructered

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

    What do you do though?
Restructure and guarantee it? At least if he just is awful in the preseason you can cut him and walk away from him.

  • DanfromVegas

You think we’re trading up for the #1 pick?

  • r8ter4evr

He wouldn’t have his spot in Canton that’s for sure

  • 0ak R8rs

As much as I’m sure Schaub wants to GTFO of Houston, he probably doesn’t wanna come here either. Maybe I will cave in like the Revis trade?
