Report: Raiders in ‘serious’ talks with Texans about trade for Schaub

The Raiders are in “serious” talks with the Houston Texans about a trade for veteran quarterback Matt Schaub, according to a report by a Houston radio station.
Schaub, 32, is the kind of experienced quarterback the Raiders are looking for while they continue to search for a long-term solution.
Journeyman Trent Edwards, fourth-year player Terrelle Pryor and second-year player Matt McGloin are the only quarterbacks on the Raiders roster.
Coach Dennis Allen and general manager Reggie McKenzie said in recent months that they aren’t sure if the Raiders quarterback of the future is on their roster.
McKenzie added that he is inclined to go with a veteran in 2014 as his starter, while a younger quarterback learns under the veteran.
That younger option might be Pryor or McGloin, or it could be a quarterback that the Raiders select in the NFL draft in May. The Raiders hold the No. 5 pick in a draft that features numerous attractive quarterbacks.
Schaub still has three years left on a contract that calls for him to earn $10 million in base salary in 2014, $12.5 million in ’15 and $14.5 million in ‘16. The Raiders are flush with salary cap space and can accommodate such a salary.
Schaub is fresh from his worst season since he became a starter in 2007. He had 10 touchdown passes and 14 passes intercepted last season. That prompted coach Gary Kubiak to bench Schaub.
McKenzie traded for veteran quarterback Matt Flynn last offseason and anointed him the starter. Pryor beat out Flynn in training camp, and the Raiders released Flynn early in the season after Flynn started one game.
In other news, linebacker Rob Jackson and defensive end Alex Carrington are scheduled to visit the Raiders in the coming days as the Raiders continue their wide-ranging search to revamp their defense.
Jackson, 28, played mostly special teams and as a reserve linebacker during his six seasons with the Washington Redskins.
However, he also flashed as a potential starter when he filled in for 14 games in 2012.
The Raiders are set at all three linebacker spots, with 2013 starters Kevin Burnett, Nick Roach and Sio Moore under contract for 2014. The Raiders also added veteran linebacker LaMarr Woodley via free agency Thursday.
Jackson played in only 10 games his first three seasons. He appeared in 44 of 48 games the past three seasons. Fourteen of his 15 starts came in ’12.
Already, the Raiders signed four players that are expected to compete for starting jobs next season.
Defensive end Justin Tuck, defensive lineman Antonio Smith and cornerback Tarell Brown are the others besides Woodley.
Carrington, 26, started nine of the 44 games he played for the Buffalo Bills the past four seasons. He played in only three games last season and recorded 10 tackles.

Classic example right here. Raiders wanted Palmer at $10M in’13 WITH ZERO GUARANTEED!
Which means they didn’t want him. Seems like an important addendum.

  • Ian

I wouldn’t exactly call Flynn a cancer to this team, you are over exaggerating. Also, I think Schaub and Flynn are two different guys character wise, if Schaub joins and then later becomes a backup then he would prob not make a huge deal out of it (was there discontent last year when he got benched? No).

  • disqus_yeZNegncsV

Okay, what vet is available whom you would like him to get?

  • mikeschoice

Palmer for 15 was a joke. He has way more picks than schaubb. You know he throws picks every year

  • pcraider

If RM gets Schaub we need to run the victory formation all game long and have McFadden 20 yards deep protecting the pick 6

  • Raider_Riff

Are you underestimating Reggie’s stupidity when it comes to the QB position?

    Dangerous doing that.

  • Elliot

    He is usually dead on…

  • 0ak R8rs

Yea. I loved when he saved the Nakatomi building. And then that airport a few years later.

  • RediaR

    Call the doc back…

  • IAmAlwaysWrong

Schaub has 3-years $37 million left on that deal. I can see him agreeing to make that 2014 salary fully guaranteed and cutting those 2015 & 2016 ones in half

  • RediaR

I was going to make that joke but I passed.

  • Dakota

    Reggie has no plan.

  • Howard Benner

Yes; John McClain of the Houston Chronicle. . .definite oracle level scribe. . .

Their fat tub of goo is better than our (Ray Ratto) fat tub of goo. . .

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

    Watkins?
    OK.

  • Ian

Wow you are really pessimistic on Schaub. Watch he comes in here and throws for 20 TDs, 10 picks, and 4,000 yds. You will be eating some crow and I’m sure it will be tasty!

  • JOn Wooah

I would take Mgloin 10x before schaub at this point.

  • disqus_yeZNegncsV

Maybe O’Brien want McGloin for a back up. I think we need to keep Mcg, get rid of TP. Still wish TP would try receiver.

Why would we want to do that? Gives us no flexibility in 2014, and a 5-6 million dead cap hit if we cut him in 2015.
Just let it ride, give us flexibility.

  • Chino

How much is guaranteed if he refuses and gets cut?

  • Raider_Riff

Vick is willing to play for much less than that.

  • jesusraiderjim

    YippieCaiYea

  • Gdog

Al should have traded for Schaub in 2007, and then drafted AP.

But now? I dunno… as long as it doesn’t prevent the insane person Reggie from thinking we are set at QB and skip picking one at 5 (if one of the Big-3 are available.)

  • 0ak R8rs

I’m jonesing for Die Hard now. Think I’ll pop a DVD in and forget any of this is happening.

  • Elliot

    Chargers – rivers
    Broncos- manning
    Chiefs- Smith
    Raiders- bozo the clown

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

I’m not so sure they’re going to cut him.

  • Guest

    Hi there….

  • RediaR

    That is a longshot.

  • Howard Benner

    What a prime mentor. . .

Do as I say; not (throw incessantly throw pick sixes) as I do. .

another potential negative distinction; most pick sixes authored in a season. . .

  • IAmAlwaysWrong

because like everybody else, he doesn’t want to be here?

  • RediaR

The fans will cut him if he steps foot in the stadium again.

  • Raider_Riff

    this makes sense.

Except in the short run it means we used up that 10m in caps space on a guy that wasnt here very long and we couldve used it on a guy like Walter Thurmond or Jared Allen that would actually help this team with far more certainty than Shaub.

  • Ian

I wonder who you guys would rather have: Schaub or Campbell? He’s a FA this year too, ya know. LOL, I bet at least a dozen posters in here want JC back

  • J Hill

Yeah, was going to ask the capologists what would be our ramifications if we cut him next year?

  • Howard Benner

    a pox on you. . .

  • disqus_yeZNegncsV

are we just supposed to forget the previous tenure of Schaub? I get it: he had a horrible year. Unless it was caused by injury, shouldn’t we be looking at his previous work?
    What’s a better choice?

  • JOn Wooah

I see why Texans want to make sure the Raiders get schaub. They play the raiders this year and want an easy WIN against a former teamate.

    2. unload that terrible salary he has

  • Howard Benner

Then another pox upon you, too. . .

  • mikeschoice

Has better career Stats than eli . 2-0 then they went off a cliff something happened. Needs fresh start

  • Raider_Riff

    Great points.

  • disqus_yeZNegncsV

yep, yep, yep. I’d love to give him that receiver!

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

Yeah, but if you draft Johnny F, Teddy, or Bortles with that pick, they are still going to be sitting on the sidelines for awhile.
None of them are Andrew Luck.
    We need a quarterback now.

  • Chino

No reason he can’t return to form. Relax guys. One bad year whoop di doo. Big Ben had a bad year and came back just fine

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

You seriously going to try and float that one out there?

  • Howard Benner

Be (very) careful what you ask for. . .

I just hope you weren’t asking for that. . .

  • RediaR

But not for what he is currently paid + draft picks and/or McGloin.

  • EDWARD TEACH

Not sure why anyone regurgitates stuff from Corkran in here. The guy has shown over and over that he is pretty good at reporting the news but that he is completely lost when it comes to speculating and predicting things. He’s almost always wrong.

  • disqus_yeZNegncsV

Name the ones available, then (FAs or guys whose teams actually WOULD trade them).
    Vick is a no-no.

  • SnBG

Have to agree with you on that.

  • RediaR

Not trading for a stopgap coming off of a horrendous year.

  • pcraider

    So did Rivers
