Kevin Boothe Q&A

The transcript of a conference call with offensive lineman Kevin Boothe, who signed with the Raiders about two hours after the club officially announced the signing of wide receiver James Jones:

Q: What made you decide to come back to the Raiders? How long have you been talking to them?

Boothe: “Things kind of picked up quickly. There was interest from them probably a couple of days ago, and decided I would come in for a visit. [We] really hit it off here. I like the direction of the team. They’ve put some pieces together here and it’s a great culture that they’re building over here, and I am excited to be a part of it. The fact that I have been here before, obviously, this place has always held a special place in my heart as the team that drafted me.”

Q: How different is the place now compared to the team you left?

Boothe: “That was eight years ago, the 2006 season. It’s different. I remember the medical guys, the training staff and the equipment guys, but that’s about it. I remember my way around the facility, but it’s a whole different place. It’s something that has obviously changed a lot over the last couple of years. So, I am excited to be a part of it.”

Q: Have they talked to you about how they plan to use you?

Boothe: “Not yet. I met with coach [Tony] Sparano and we talked about how they really like the fact that I have been able to play multiple positions if need be, so I am sure that that will continue here with the flexibility just in case something were to happen. There’s been no talk about specifically what position I’ll play.”

Q: Is it your goal to come in and start at left guard? Is that the ultimate thing here to you?

Boothe: “It doesn’t matter where, but I think any football player wants to be on the field, so all I could do is go out there and work as hard as I can and hope that I can get out there to help the team win. I think any football player wants to play and start. Sure, that’s my goal. But, in terms of position, I don’t know where specifically.”

Q: What do you like about this blocking scheme? It seems like it’s an old-fashioned power scheme. Do you feel like that fits your game?

Boothe: “Yeah, that’s basically a similar offense to what I’ve run the last seven years with New York. Just talking with coach Sparano and the plays that they run, I knew a lot of the verbiage and everything was very similar, so I think it shouldn’t take long for me to pick up the playbook. It’s an offense that I’m definitely familiar with and I look forward to it.”

Some of you should go out to Training Camp practice and tell PENN hey go play RT, see what he tells u

  • Alex7

well BPA would mean you didn’t draft an inferious player.

It would be a better player at a position you’re (currrently) rich at, or an inferior player for a position you’re (currently) lacking.

Watkins for 7 years here would make our current depth or no depth a bit meaningless, being that players are signed, let go, injured every year at every position.

  • BigBenRexor

    One year, league minimum.

  • Chino

All this will mean nothing if
dmac can’t play like he did in 2010
    Other RBs don’t step up
    Vet qb doesn’t pan out
    Mcgloin doesn’t improve
Other than that we’re looking at a team here!

    perhaps…an all-rookie team linebacker?

  • canadianraider

i believe the myth that reggie woke up the day after signing saffold ..and said ef that..im doin it my way ….sorry mr.davis but im not overpaying for saffold…im putting the kiebosh on the deal….waited patiently and now has good a line without saffold on the team..way to go reggie …reggie…reggie…..aka mr.March

  • Alex7

    goodness that’s some negative thinking.

We don’t need DMac. Reggie found Jennings and can certainly find someone similar again to be a solid to above-average NFL back for us.

Reece is already above average. Everyone knows McGloin won’t be our starting QB next year unless a bunch of injuries happen.

People who don’t stick to facts and logic likely don’t have adequate math abilities

  • jesusraiderjim

    everyone who?

  • Return

Look, I understand that YOU may not appreciate NFL records, particularly Raider all time records, but to some people and especially coaches, it actually matters. It tells a coach I have achieved. I am capable of greatness

Now just maybe no other QB had the combination of speed, football IQ, and determination to create such a record. I mean if Steve Young couldn’t do it then it must be impossible. And since it’s impossible then it must be a fluke or doesn’t count or…..

  • Myopinion

We signed penn which I’m sure you’ve seen by now.

  • Davy Jones

Are we not talking about Watkins? Robinson and Matthews rated hire by most.

  • ComptonRaider

    How the Reggie Kool-Aid tasting?

  • Alex7

everyone who knows you don’t start a QB who ranked 38th in a 32-team league. Including the HC who said our starting QB isn’t on the roster yet.

  • jesusraiderjim

    way to dispel that rumor
    TP

  • Davy Jones

Funny after taste, maybe he aged it a bit too much. ;-)

  • Papertiger

    Well, we signed Penn!

  • Soul^Patrol

I have been seeing mock drafts with some of the QBs lasting till round 2.

Would be awesome to draft BPA at #5 then have a chance at one of these QBs.

  • Davy Jones

    Agreed.

  • 0ak R8rs

Yea. I said this before. I want his fat azz down to 325 by the end of TC.

  • Chino

    Can’t win em all
@AdamSchefter: Cowboys and DT Henry Melton are putting finishing touches on a multi-year deal, according to a source.

  • Raider O

    Wow
As opposed to our own homegrown guy like JV.
Btw, I’m not a RDE/ OLB in the NFL, so if I were you I will be more concerned about what they can do and not a poster.

  • Davy Jones

. . . which is why the NFL invented the franchise tag.

  • DanfromVegas

Enough with facts and logic already!

  • Raider O

    What rumor?

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

We pretty much had to have Penn since he was the best option left for LT in FA and Reggie blew it on resigning Veldheer.
The guy is 31 and TB released him after he really slumped last year.
It does mean that we can use that #5 pick for some position other than a LT in the draft.

  • Howard Benner

If he were to dedicate himself to a workout regimen that didn’t involve KFC he would be dollars ahead. . .literally. . .

Schefter hasn’t even tweeted the Penn signing yet. Get off the shneid, buddy. What, you gotta spend time with your family or something?

  • Raider O

Vince Young has been to the Pro Bowl, so Whiners should sign him. That means he is better than a young QB like CK who hasn’t been to the PB.

  • TrevJo

    New post

  • jesusraiderjim

kind of funny in an ignorant sort of way.

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

What the hell makes you guys think Watson can be plugged into any OL position? He hasn’t even mastered his own position of RT yet.

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

    Wow that’s dumb.
Veldheer is in his mid twenties and Penn is 31.
And Pen was unimpressive last year.

  • Raider O

Thx bro. Ignorance can be amusing. Look at this place

  • Raider O

    Exactly

  • RaiderDirt

    Penn is in….

    Keep it going Reggie…

Looks more an more like we trade down in this deep draft…

Remind you Reg went from three to twelve last year & with the needs of teams that hold picks #6 thru #14…

Reg could land a future ProBowler plus 2 extra second rounders…

    One Nation

  • RaiderDirt

Plus he was able to play without injury plus start all sixteen games for,TB last year..

    One Nation

  • 0ak R8rs

Even in an off year he was +8. +15 the year before. And he doesn’t miss games. It’s an upgrade depending on the contract terms.

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

    An upgrade?! On Veldheer?’
    LMAO!

  • plunkhead

BigNix76@Raiders.com* Congrats to Reggie and the New Raiders! Cant wait to knock heads and improve on last year#lastmanstanding
Looks like Lucas has some plans next year : )

  • DanfromVegas

Veld was so awesome that his awesomeness made all the terrible raider players look phenomenal. Why Reggie? Why?

  • Ryburn Ross

5 TDs and nary a 300 yard game. 8 picks. 4 blocked passes in one game at least, and a lot of dead drives because of it.

Not even going to mention his number of “factual” wins.

Pryor regressed, but he’s still 6’4 240 and runs like a WR. You don’t have to be a genius to find ways to use that as at least a significant diversion. Not sayin he’s a better option at QB, but I’m not ready to hand the reigns to McGloin either.

  • 0ak R8rs

Coaches didn’t seem so impressed when they benched him 3 weeks later.

  • 0ak R8rs

He’s not far off at all. Better at run blocking. And should be cheaper. A lot I hope.
