McKenzie, Veldheer take turns giving sides on sides parting ways

Share

On Tuesday, Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie had the microphone, while offensive tackle Jared Veldheer had no platform to give his side of the he-said, he-said story about how the Raiders-Veldheer divorce came about.
McKenzie pinned it all on Veldheer, leaving no wiggle room.
“Losing Veldheer was a blow to me,” McKenzie told the San Francisco Chronicle. “He didn’t want to come back. It wasn’t about finances. The kid didn’t want to play for the Raiders anymore, and I struggled with that.”
On Wednesday, Veldheer got his chance behind the microphone, and he painted quite a different picture.
“I appreciate everything that Oakland did for me over the last four years, we just couldn’t get [a contract] done,” Veldheer said in an interview with Arizona Sports 98.7 FM. “It wasn’t that I didn’t want to be there, because I know that’s been said recently. That just wasn’t the case. Things were unable to get done at the table and that led to free agency and now I looking forward to Arizona and looking to what the future has here.”
So, we’re left with a variation of the adage about there being three sides to every story: McKenzie’s side, Veldheer’s side and the truth.

We had this years money for longer term deals and we drafted two redshirt players at 1 and 2. In spite of a depleted roster.

  • 1960AutumnWind

Sorry that was in reply to rick worth

  • J Hill

    Well …

At least I can take comfort knowing that we still have RDE as a priority need since we were in the Jared Allen talks.

  • DanfromVegas

The truth is we have no fu cking clue about what happened. For anyone to claim they have the inside info on how things went down behind the scenes is pretty lame. I don’t care if you hate or love Reggie or DA. The bottom line is LH and JV are no longer Raiders. We owe them nothing.

  • _Mista_

I think Art Shell hiring Walsh second time around was the dumbest football decision I’ve ever seen.

  • 1960AutumnWind

JV side leaked 5 year 30 million with 10 gar. Not enough Reggie sorry.

  • Howard Benner

RDe’s are pass rushers first & should not be asked to move inside. If the opposite were to occur you are woefully lacking @ that position.

LDE’s on the other hand are run stoppers first & in some instances are asked to “kick inside” to DT in pass rushing situations.

The two DE’s are actually quite different positions. Even their techniques for engaging OT’s are different; LDE’s are are taught to “bull in” with their heads first in run defense assignments; the RDE is always trying to exploit the LOT with his skill set. . .

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

I agree. the less you say beyond perfunctory GM speak, the better the damage control, if that’s your aim. There is nothing you can say that won’t be used as ammo by somebody.

  • _Mista_

I believe Veldheer when he says he wanted to stay and Freckles bungled the negotiations, unfortunately.

  • r8ter4evr

    GDog?

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

I sure can’t argue with your statement. I don’t agree, but I can’t argue with it.

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

    Nah. Gdog doesn’t hide.

  • no where in that report is the mention of “the Bear’s success in free agency” being a reason he chose the Bears,

    liar

    http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-network-total-access/0ap2000000337320/Why-did-Allen-sign-with-Bears

  • PrometheusISgodoftheblog

veldheer is gone and not coming back. there is a LT in the draft 3X the player without the roids. no big loss

  • Howard Benner

Not one broken tackle. Just one stiff arm. the NFL doesn’t allow cutback runs across the entire field. . .he runs in open space. . .CFL doesn’t do much run force, do they?

I watched it twice & I’m not impressed. I don;t think his style converts well in the NFL. . .

  • PrometheusISgodoftheblog

all publicity is good publicity. RM isn’t the most exciting dude on the planet so anything he can say or do to get attention is a good thing.

  • r8ter4evr

Ya he is a pit bull not a poodle

  • i believe McK when he says it was the most bizarre contract negotiation he had ever been involved in.

The whole Veldheer clan seem a bit off,,

  • r8ter4evr

Watson or Penn will fill in nicely we need a playmaker with the #5 pick

  • _Mista_

Well McK was heavily involved in the negotiation so if it was bizarre maybe it was him that made it bizarre?

IDK….this is weird sh!et even for Raider fans to digest.

  • PrometheusISgodoftheblog

i hope ur right about watson. seems like wishful thinking. and a LT lets the most important play maker throw it to other play makers. good LT is needed

  • _Mista_

We are just commenting on the latest news. Who in their right mind thinks JV isn’t replaceable?

  • PrometheusISgodoftheblog

and i just was adding my own insight to the “news” that Oak lost an average LT because they wouldn’t overpay.

  • Gdog

I cut my teeth with 15 years of politics on Usenet… this place is a baby pool in comparison.
I can’t believe how sensitive everyone here is sometimes…

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

He gets his teeth in a topic, he doesn’t let go, that’s for sure.

  • 24

    Link?

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

    That’s just mean.

  • r8ter4evr

Sporano did wonders with our shifting Oline last year. If Penn was a Pro Bowler there is no reason why he can’t again

  • Gdog

    Why?

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

    ‘cuz it hurt my feelings.

  • Gdog

lol… you always crack me up.

  • DJ Johnny

Didn’t DJAX say he was committed to Philly now?

  • 504 Raider

I can’t believe you guys are still crying over Veldheer. SMH.

  • r8ter4evr

One thing we all have in common We Just Want To Win Baby and there is the whole basis of our debates

  • Umrao32

Listening to SiriusXM NFL radio earlier and they stated that before J Allen signed with the Bears that we were 1 of the other teams vying for Allen’s services: offering the most money at $9 Million a year. Yet Allen chose to sign with the Bears cause he believed Cutler is the type of QB he’s always wanted to be teamed up with.
My question is has anyone else read anything or heard anything that we were that close to signing him?

  • r8ter4evr

    Great comparison by the way

  • _Mista_

Cutler is going to take Jared down a road to nowhere what a dumb clown he is.

  • DJ Johnny

Someone posted that it wasn’t until the last minute Bears came in with a strong offer. Not as strong as Reggie’s but they have the great Jay Cutler.

  • Gdog

The Usenet Raider forum was more lively than this actually… we used to get together for something called “Alegates” in Oakland… I made three of them. Most of us are now just friends on Facebook. One of them literally threatened to drive down and punch me out… he lived only 4 hours away… it was over politics though.

Thats why I don’t take any of this sheet seriously… this is nothing, really.

  • Dakota

Yeah, too bad they are all gone now.

  • Umrao32

    Thank you Brotha’s

  • Gdog

If anyone actually met me in RL, I am quite the opposite. Friendliest person. Always has been… why I succeeded in business. Thats actually kind of why I like the internet debates… its so different than RL…

  • J Hill

    Damn it!!!

    I slept through the draft?

  • EMRaiders

I saw broken tackles in almost every run. Also head on collisions in which he usually wins. But it is against the CFL, so who knows how that will translate to the NFL.

I don’t know, I have no reason to, but maybe I am seeing this through rose color glasses.

  • DanfromVegas

One has to question the man’s judgment. He’s always wanted to be teamed up with a QB like Cutler? Things must have been quite sh itty in Viking land if he’s looking forward to playing with Jay effin Cutler.

  • Gdog

My parting question of the night: Will the Browns draft TWO Qbs before the Raiders draft one?
    http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/03/26/mike-pettine-qb-class-is-so-deep-that-browns-might-draft-two/

    I say its 50/50…

  • Miamiraider78

The reality is, young football players don’t want to play in an old run down baseball stadium, on a basefoot field for 8 weeks. The only way you lure up and coming FA’s is by overpaying. Hell, we don’t even know where we’ll be playing in the next few years! Reggie went with plan B and that was signing vets who can still ball and would be great mentors for the players he’s going to draft and those already on the roster. If he craps this draft, he needs to go…I will agree to that. For now, just wait and see!

  • DanfromVegas

It’s sad man. Dude is a Cardinal now, and he doesn’t represent the Silver N Black.

  • yes, and they will trade for TP,
