Jones-Drew gets ‘opportunity’ he wanted from Raiders

Maurice Jones-Drew is back in the Bay Area, where he was born, raised and prepped at De La Salle High School. This time, it’s for more than the offseason now that he is a member of the Raiders.
Jones-Drew, 29, signed a three-year contract with the Raiders on Friday, the latest big-name free agent to join the Raiders as part of their massive roster makeover.
He brings an impressive resume with him, having amassed 10,944 yards and 79 touchdowns rushing and receiving in his first eight NFL seasons, all with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Jones-Drew said he also brings a chip on his shoulder, something he feels makes him fit right in with a Raiders roster chock full of castoffs from other teams.
“It’s something that’s going to drive us and push us to that next level,” Jones-Drew said in a conference call.
Jones-Drew said he received interest from other teams since the start of free agency. However, he wasn’t interested in mentoring younger players or being a backup.
“It’s going to be a competition and that’s really all I ask,” Jones-Drew said of being told that he’ll get a chance to earn the starting job. “… I only wanted a chance to compete and play. The Raiders gave me that opportunity, and I’m going to take it and run with it.”
Jones-Drew made the most of his opportunity with the Jaguars once he earned the starting job. He rushed for 4,321 yards and 28 touchdowns and caught 130 passes from 2009-11.
Injuries each of the past two seasons hampered Jones-Drew, he said, and a surgery in 2012 might have scared off teams from taking a chance on him this offseason.
Jones-Drew acknowledged that he had a down year last season, when he averaged a career-low 3.4 yards rushing. However, he said a lot of that owed to playing injured so often. He’s healthy and ready to go now.
“I have a ton left in my game,” Jones-Drew said. “People tend to look at running backs and say, ‘Oh, you’re 29, you don’t have anything left.’ … I feel like I have a ton left in the tank and I get an opportunity to show that here in Oakland.”
Jones-Drew said he is excited about the prospect of competing against incumbent starter Darren McFadden for playing time, if not the starting job.
“He kind of has a leg up on me because he’s been in this offense already before,” Jones-Drew said. “My job is to come in and to compete to play. … We both have something to prove and that will help us all out in the long run, competing and being able to push each other.”
Jones-Drew also welcomes the challenge of helping the Raiders end a playoff drought that extends 11 seasons.
The Raiders last won more games in a season when they lost back in 2002, when they advanced to the Super Bowl.
“We have a chance to compete for a division (title) and compete for the playoffs. That’s what you really want to play for, to be a part of that building process, not necessarily for a team that’s already there.”
In other news, defensive tackle Pat Sims re-signed with the Raiders and defensive end C.J. Wilson signed with the Raiders after spending his first four NFL seasons with the Green Bay Packers.
Sims, 28, started all 16 games for the Raiders last season and anchored their defensive line. He is expected to compete for playing time on the interior of the Raiders line with recent acquisition Antonio Smith and holdover Stacy McGee.

If you buy this you are really gullible. They want to get him out of the building so they can’t put him back on the field. The fans the team could afford another pick6 from that guy………period

  • Guest123

loved the carol burnett show! what u talking bout willis?

  • AlDavisJr

We shoulda traded Pryor to the Texans. That would have made them super bowl caliber for sure!

  • Raideraholic

    Texans cut Danieal Manning
    ————————————-
If Reg doesn’t sign 33 year old Rodgers, Manning is another option for DB depth.

  • Dakota

I agree the fans have a lot to do with it. Just posting info. I am not that high on Schaub. He was just the best option in a bag of bad options.

  • JV.

Ya he will make the pro bowl this year for sure.. I mean when you have a hall of fame db like tìts coaching you.. The sky’s the limit.

  • Raiderfusion

Great fun. Korman and Conway were outstanding.

  • IAmAlwaysWrong

forget dudes named Danielle or Shannon. locker room problems

  • Dakota

    Woot!

  • JV.

Thomas Decoud is younger and better.

I think manning is a FS.

  • Guest123

you wouldn’t want Christine Michael I guess?

  • Blackholepriest

Pryor would probably sell better than Schaub at this point……..lol

  • Dakota

You are right….sorry Schaub… more like 175% upgrade. I apologize to Schaub.

  • marks hair

none of the options are bad.. lots of good wide receivers this year. However, djax gives us more freedom.. we can still use our pics however we’d like

  • Guest123

    the “abe vigoda” contract?

  • Raiderfusion

See the movie, and after that it might not be so painful. You’re right though, it’s not one of the best tunes.

  • inonewordraider

djax and his agent have many teams interested, so you better believe if we’re interested he’s gonna visit us knowing we have plenty of $. Reggie knows what the other teams caps are, it’s really between us and NYJ in my opinion, cuz we got the dough

  • IAmAlwaysWrong

heck no! not unless he goes by “Chris”

  • R8erEduc8er

Evans is intriguing to me. He’s obviously a big guy, but the way he uses his body to shield smaller CBs is a big advantage for him. He knows his strengths and uses them accordingly. He’d be a great 3rd down, move the chains target as well as deep route target imo. Reminds me of Vincent Jackson. I do think there’s only a cpl of routes that he can run though.

  • IAmAlwaysWrong

i agree, JV. I wanted DeCoud over CWood

  • marks hair

I think if he leaves Washington without a contract then he will be a Raider

  • Dakota

Suicide is Painless….kind of creepy for a kid…..maybe you knew instinctively that the song was weird????

  • william banks

Says the guy who know how to evaluate talent——–Darren McSadden,=You know nothing about talent.Clueless.

  • IAmAlwaysWrong

Jets GM already said “not interested” . not sure why Ed Werner thinks they still are or could be…

  • ComptonRaider

A.J McCarron’s draft stock is rising. We need this guy, been saying this for months now.
    Make it happen Reggie.

  • Blackholepriest

Dont want him, why not keep Jenkins why bring this guy in here?

  • EDWARD TEACH

On both sides of the argument, I would say.

I’m looking forward to seeing him play. The Raiders have never before acquired a veteran QB with his resume, and I’m including Blanda, Lamonica, Plunkett and Gannon. How it all plays out remains to be seen, but facts are facts. He has a body of work that exceeds any that the Raiders have brought in before.

  • Guest123

that theme song was made for monochrome tv with am sound. on today’s fancy hidef perfect sound quality sets, the sound is flat. this just takes some context.

  • Guest123

Jenkings is a Buc, that ship has sailed.

  • Dakota

Pre injury McFadden actually had talent….but Pryor is still trying to learn how to throw a football lmao.

  • Raiderfusion

    Who is Kevin Sack?

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

    Kicker’s excepted.

  • JV.

I think he can be good, round two sounds good to me.

    Most don’t want him.

  • Dakota

Because the Jets HC, Geno Smith and Ron Mexico paid the GM a visit in the middle of the night with soap in socks and now the Jets are back to being interested in DJax?

  • R8erEduc8er

Wasn’t really weird. As a kid (maybe 1st, 2nd grade??), the song just said to me “This is a grown up show. It’s going to be long and boring. Run!!!”. Guess I can appreciate it now.

  • Blackholepriest

If they sign this bum, i know Reggie just fishing. No plan no sense of how to build a team. Hes just getting cheap players. The cheaper the better………period

  • JV.

    New post.

  • EDWARD TEACH

Keeps the hits coming from the NY market, but I’m sure you already knew that.

  • R8erEduc8er

Bring that Rob Jackson guy back here also. Good solid depth.

  • IAmAlwaysWrong

the dude from that chick band Matchbox 20?

  • william banks

What ever,I know with you and the others that it runs deep.Raiders talent shouldn’t be something that evaluated against.Because lets face it none of our QBs have had any weapons to throw to.Very,Very, limited at best.No a fair evaluation because of the garbage that this Commitment to Irrelevance Organization that has been running the Raiders.CLUELESS.

  • R8erEduc8er

    Ha!

And no, that’s not Penn lol (refresh)

    2.

  • funnyfalcon

This is why stats are useful, but you have to see how the team did as well. Alex Smith’s record was good, but don’t let that fool you: pretty sure he comes back down to earth this year (like he always seems to following a good season). Highly doubt Smith will ever be the starting qb for a winning super bowl team.
