Jones-Drew gets ‘opportunity’ he wanted from Raiders

Maurice Jones-Drew is back in the Bay Area, where he was born, raised and prepped at De La Salle High School. This time, it’s for more than the offseason now that he is a member of the Raiders.
Jones-Drew, 29, signed a three-year contract with the Raiders on Friday, the latest big-name free agent to join the Raiders as part of their massive roster makeover.
He brings an impressive resume with him, having amassed 10,944 yards and 79 touchdowns rushing and receiving in his first eight NFL seasons, all with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Jones-Drew said he also brings a chip on his shoulder, something he feels makes him fit right in with a Raiders roster chock full of castoffs from other teams.
“It’s something that’s going to drive us and push us to that next level,” Jones-Drew said in a conference call.
Jones-Drew said he received interest from other teams since the start of free agency. However, he wasn’t interested in mentoring younger players or being a backup.
“It’s going to be a competition and that’s really all I ask,” Jones-Drew said of being told that he’ll get a chance to earn the starting job. “… I only wanted a chance to compete and play. The Raiders gave me that opportunity, and I’m going to take it and run with it.”
Jones-Drew made the most of his opportunity with the Jaguars once he earned the starting job. He rushed for 4,321 yards and 28 touchdowns and caught 130 passes from 2009-11.
Injuries each of the past two seasons hampered Jones-Drew, he said, and a surgery in 2012 might have scared off teams from taking a chance on him this offseason.
Jones-Drew acknowledged that he had a down year last season, when he averaged a career-low 3.4 yards rushing. However, he said a lot of that owed to playing injured so often. He’s healthy and ready to go now.
“I have a ton left in my game,” Jones-Drew said. “People tend to look at running backs and say, ‘Oh, you’re 29, you don’t have anything left.’ … I feel like I have a ton left in the tank and I get an opportunity to show that here in Oakland.”
Jones-Drew said he is excited about the prospect of competing against incumbent starter Darren McFadden for playing time, if not the starting job.
“He kind of has a leg up on me because he’s been in this offense already before,” Jones-Drew said. “My job is to come in and to compete to play. … We both have something to prove and that will help us all out in the long run, competing and being able to push each other.”
Jones-Drew also welcomes the challenge of helping the Raiders end a playoff drought that extends 11 seasons.
The Raiders last won more games in a season when they lost back in 2002, when they advanced to the Super Bowl.
“We have a chance to compete for a division (title) and compete for the playoffs. That’s what you really want to play for, to be a part of that building process, not necessarily for a team that’s already there.”
In other news, defensive tackle Pat Sims re-signed with the Raiders and defensive end C.J. Wilson signed with the Raiders after spending his first four NFL seasons with the Green Bay Packers.
Sims, 28, started all 16 games for the Raiders last season and anchored their defensive line. He is expected to compete for playing time on the interior of the Raiders line with recent acquisition Antonio Smith and holdover Stacy McGee.

Every night between JAG’s on INSP.

  • DutchRaid

Think the Raiders will give the nod to Simms over McGee? Raiders high on McGee to start or changed when they resigned Simms?

  • BigBenRexor

Kasa? The guy who couldn’t take over Mastrud spot?

  • SaintKaufman

RM was willing to spend money at the QB, OT and DE positions. I would put more value on MLB than WR. Just a thought.

  • Dakota

With fat DTs they rotate enough that it should not matter.

  • Guest123

    agree with rotation. co-starters!

  • DutchRaid

Brisel also was asked to Bulk up to compete at guard? Bad wheel (ankle) and added weight?

  • 1960AutumnWind

So sick of this bad coaching BS. How do you run off tackle with the train wreck we were having there? How do you use Reece with “one read” Pryor? Too many Raider fans way overestimate the talent on the roster last year. You can see it in replays where play calling put the team in really good positions at times with players failing to make plays.

  • Blackholepriest

You need a minimum of 3 and an additional QB on the PS

  • DutchRaid

Elite Pass rushing DT in draft?

  • FourMoreYears

Still blaming Pryor for Reece. I guess it’s TP’s fault Reece was on the sideline for over half of the offensive snaps last year.

  • jumpnjiminy

    Andy Griffith is dead.

  • inonewordraider

I can hope can I? how’s you boy jacoby doin?

  • Dakota

I saw them run outside with McFadden successfully several times…..but they would then go away from it.

  • AutumnThunderstorm

Rivera didn’t take over the starting TE position either. Mastrud had 3 years experience as a blocking TE in the NFL remember?

  • Raiderfusion

He’s been a Pro Bowler twice, and in the AFC Championship Game just a little over a year ago. Last year we’re all hoping was a blip on the screen, and he can get back to where he was. Best QB pick up in this off season by any team for only a 6th rounder. Over a 5 or 6 yr period he had a QB rating of 6th best in the history of the NFL. A year ago you would be screaming through the computer for RM to pick him up, and you know it. Oh that’s right you’re a TP fanatic, never mind, what a joke.

  • Blackholepriest

Matt Schaub is a huge ? Imho! He will have to show me, i never thought he was that good when he was at his best. To start preparing for the playoffs because we got him is laughable……….period

I will agree he certainly fits as a needed vet QB for the classroom but beyond that. I just think the guy is way overrated

  • FourMoreYears

And yet he’s still miles ahead of anyone else on our roster……..period.

  • Dakota

He is okay…..at his worst he is a 150% upgrade from Pryor.

  • EDWARD TEACH

I think he’s streets better than what he had going into the offseason, and only a complete buffoon would fail to see that.

You think Pryor is potentially an all-world quarterback. Who needs to get a clue?

  • Guest123

if 8-8 is overrated, then let me shoot for the stars.

  • BigBenRexor

Agreed, And I beleive the word you were looking for is “Matt Schaub is a huge *Piece of $h!t”

  • Guest123

Kory “clean” Sheets is the key to our season. Last man standing.

  • DutchRaid

Question, do you think Matt Schaub became too old to play in the ZBS? Takes a pretty good athlete to run that system, Schaub really doesn’t strike me as that guy?

  • BigBenRexor

The same was said about Matt Flynn. The phrase, “Better than what we got” doesn’t mean much around here.

  • R8erEduc8er

Matlock and Mash = torture television.

  • Dakota

Just saw the Cubs starting lineup…..depressing…..but I have patience for a baseball team rebuilding with a proven GM.
Reggie? Win now or GTFO in the parity league.

  • Guest123

We should bring back Knapp just to be on the safe side.

  • Blackholepriest

Yeah i’ll agree in terms of experience and “quarterbacking” but in terms of winning edge. Not so much!

  • R8erEduc8er

    Still missing Palmer?

  • Guest123

MASH was great, IDK what you’re seeing.

  • Dakota

Lol, I hate Matlock, but MASH is great…..own the entire series.

  • Guest123

Matlock and McGuyver are on the same level.

  • Blackholepriest

    He’s serviceable………period

  • Guest123

I just saw the Rays opening day lineup. This looks like a championship roster.

  • AutumnThunderstorm

Raiders’ backfield is once again talented and deep.

    Reece
    MJD
    DMac
    Murray
    Sheets
    Stewart
    Olawalie

  • Dakota

lol, they have not folded that franchise yet?

  • SaintKaufman
  • Guest123

you must mean the Cubs right? when was the last time they won anything? You’d have to ask your great great gramps about that!

  • DutchRaid

SShhhh…he is our deep cover agent right now, fighting the enemy within. The whole 2012 offensive debacle was just one of Reggie’s many ruses to trick the Broncos…

  • BigBenRexor

Like Reggie, still missing on all QB’s.

  • Guest123

Cork just tweeted out that Carlos Rogers is going to be in the building today. See how a little blog complaints first thing in the morning on Monday work?

  • Rick Worth

How about the Toronto Blue Jays Wooo! And A’s of course!!

  • JV.

@RaiderTruths: Apparently Carlos Rogers is visiting the Raiders today, there’s your slot corner.

    Yesssss.

  • Guest123

all it takes is a little whining and complaining about corner depth.

  • JV.

Have the biggest feeling djax signs with skins…Snyder will do whatever it takes.

  • Rick Worth

How about those Raptors eh? Playoffs woo!!

  • Dakota

See, I watched 1/2 of an inning of the first game of the year and I can tell with 100% certainty that the Cubs suck.

  • JV.

Not happy about age but pair him with brown and we get the Niners 2 starting corners from last year haha

  • R8erEduc8er

Rogers is a good corner imo. Only knock is he drops eaaassyyy INTs.
