Raiders lock up another valuable backup

Running back Jeremy Stewart on Wednesday signed a one-year contract with the Raiders that keeps him in a silver-and-black uniform for a third straight season.
Stewart appeared in 17 games for the Raiders during his first two seasons in Oakland. He played mostly special teams, though he also touched the ball 37 times as a backup to Darren McFadden.
The one-year contract was tendered Stewart by the Raiders in advance of free agency, which started March. 11. Stewart is the third of Oakland’s six exclusive-rights free agents to sign a one-year tender.
Offensive tackle Matt McCants, linebacker Kaelin Burnett and cornerback Chimdi Chekwa still haven’t signed their tenders, though all are expected to do so because they lack the four years’ experience required of players to field offers from other teams as unrestricted free agents.
McFadden and Maurice Jones-Drew are expected to compete for the starting spot at running back next season. Stewart is among several candidates for backup spots.

Actually, just put me down for 7 wins. I think we will be 7-9 if Schaub plays well.

  • Howard Benner

Here’s the latest on Brandin Cooks from; Brandin cooks. . .If the Oregon Eagles do opt to obtain his services he would be the “Anti DJacc. . .”

“Cooks is undersized, but he is our third-ranked wide receiver prospect
because of his great speed (he ran the fastest 40 time among combine WRs
at 4.33 seconds), route running and ball skills,” McShay wrote. “His
acceleration up the field right after the catch is outstanding. He led
the FBS with 32 receptions of 20 yards or longer.”

Cooks told Philly.com that he thinks he could make an impact in the same vein as D-Jax.

“Maybe Chip Kelly is looking to take another speedy receiver in that first round, and that could be me,” he said.
“Who knows? And if that’s the case, a lot of people will wonder ‘Can he
do it like DeSean Jackson?’ In my opinion, I can do it like him and do
    it better.”

  • R8erEduc8er

Probably before Monday. That’s when Titans offseason workouts begin.

  • Howard Benner

I hope they’re merely kiking the tires. . .might produce a blow out. . .

  • Goldie7

Reggie needs to sign Miles Austin, Jason Avant, Nate Burleson, and Santonio Holmes; or at least bring two or three out of the four WRs, which would strengthen this position greatly.

  • IAmAlwaysWrong

it’s only sad when it doesn’t work.

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

You are recorded in history. And if you messed with the list, i’ll never know ‘cuz don’t look at it that closely.

  • Howard Benner

You guys got a racket going on. . .y’all Sopranos fans?!

  • Howard Benner

With their bad karma they’ll slip to the bottom of the lottery order. . .LOL

Kent Bazemore; great pickup! Build around kinda guy. . .LOL

  • marks hair

what would be the point? None of those guys are clear upgrades.. and its maybe the deepest draft for wide receivers in history.

  • Howard Benner

Yeah, & the Milwaukee Bucks will be sold to Chris Hansen & relocated to Seattle. . .total association symmetry. . .

  • Howard Benner

And it didn’t help them @ all. . .if you pull the trigger & shoot yourself in the foot it’s time to unload the gun. . .

  • Howard Benner

    Hometown hero. . .

Just like the Knicks getting Patrick Ewing when he was available. . .

  • Goldie7

Its an upgrade because all of these WRs have the potential to be no. 1, and all four can also play in the slot (that’s what we need).

  • Howard Benner

    Too bad he can’t just wear “X. . .”

    Roman Numerals aren’t allowed. . .

  • PlunkforHOF

    Big time

  • rioderek

If the Raiders win more than 5 games this season I’ll be amazed. I simply can’t see DA producing a decent product. The team still has the worse QB in the conference, a substandard HC and no super star. It’s hard to win with those variables in place. However I hope you’re right and I’m wrong.

  • Davy Jones

Put me down for 8 wins.

  • Myopinion

The deepest wr draft in history means the best post draft cuts too. There will be some good players cut if think. Better than these guys anyway.

  • aig-raiders

Dont think this is the way to go. We got young talent in Streater and Homles. We already got Jones. Those other guys on your list are all over the hill or never been anything worthy (Avant and Burleson).

  • OhioRaider

    Burleson meeting with the Browns.

  • aig-raiders

    oh man, not again.

  • SR Raider

8 is admittedly optimistic right now. This assumes: 1) we draft an impact player (Watkins or Clowney) at #5, 2) we pick up another partial/aging impact player in FA (with the money for DJax/JAllen), and 3) we grab a good QB prospect (Murray or McCarron) in a later round who can take over for Schaub later in the year.

Kind of a lot to ask for, but Reggie has been moving in exactly this direction, so there is hope

  • Goldie7

Thanks. Reggie still could check him out if the Browns do not sign him.

  • OhioRaider

If Schaub reverts to form, QB rating over 90, then 9-10 wins is achievable. If his rating is below 80 could be a long year.

  • jesusraiderjim

I added a win 10 is it. Playoffs baby

but man I want this team to start winning again so badly…

  • Goldie7

However, if Streater or Holmes get hurt who will we have to replace them?

  • 1960AutumnWind

    Wow that sounds familiar.

  • OhioRaider

It didn’t? Irving is an All Star.

  • Goldie7

What if we want to go three wide or four wide, who are we going to put out there? We are thin, thin in the WRs position; therefore, we must be smart about this.

  • RaidO

Raiders WR’s SUCKED last year. They need another WR(playmaker)…BUT:

“With Jackson now off the market, the Raiders still have a desperate need for a young playmaker with no quick way of satisfying it. With owner Mark Davis growing impatient, a lifeline like Jackson could have kept McKenzie and head coach Dennis Allen from drowning in the sea of 8-8 expectations.

McKenzie will have to turn to the draft to find a playmaker at wide receiver. It’s a special draft class of receivers, but rarely is a rookie an immediate star at the position, which is what the Raiders need.

Only six receivers in the history of the league have compiled 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns their rookie year—none since Randy Moss in 1998. Even 1,000-yard seasons are rare for rookie wide receivers, with only 16 in the history of the league accomplishing the feat.Calvin Johnson didn’t even have 1,000 yards his rookie year.
