Raiders lock up another valuable backup

Running back Jeremy Stewart on Wednesday signed a one-year contract with the Raiders that keeps him in a silver-and-black uniform for a third straight season.
Stewart appeared in 17 games for the Raiders during his first two seasons in Oakland. He played mostly special teams, though he also touched the ball 37 times as a backup to Darren McFadden.
The one-year contract was tendered Stewart by the Raiders in advance of free agency, which started March. 11. Stewart is the third of Oakland’s six exclusive-rights free agents to sign a one-year tender.
Offensive tackle Matt McCants, linebacker Kaelin Burnett and cornerback Chimdi Chekwa still haven’t signed their tenders, though all are expected to do so because they lack the four years’ experience required of players to field offers from other teams as unrestricted free agents.
McFadden and Maurice Jones-Drew are expected to compete for the starting spot at running back next season. Stewart is among several candidates for backup spots.

I have to wonder if “self promoting” is like pride, best explained by Macrellus Wallace. . .

“It never helps. . .it only hurts. . . fvck pride!”

Have to like his confidence, though. . .

  • Myopinion

    Jones,Moore,streeter,Holmes,butler,criner,Jenkins
A lot of youth and potential. With the draft and after draft cuts affected by all the wrs drafted I think we’ll be fine.

  • Myopinion

Good I like ausberry,Rivera, kasa tons of youth and potential.

  • the super genius dr robert

Yep. It’s “win now” and rookies ain’t getting that done.

  • rioderek

You nailed it. Thank you. DA is a pathetic leader and HC.

  • the super genius dr robert

Get out the sugar. It’s time for a big jug.

  • the super genius dr robert

Moore was on pace for like 1100 yards and 9 Tds when he got hurt. Streater nearly got 1k.

    With Pryor and mcg.

Maybe a rookie wr isn’t the answer.

  • 1960AutumnWind

He is a good high character guy and I follow that program. I mean people in my family are friends with some players and coaches. Hard working guy very well liked on team. If he somehow dropped to 36 he would be a steal especially if we go defense at 5.

  • RediaR

    No

  • RediaR

We aren’t thin at WR we are weak at the very top of the lineup.

  • Howard Benner

An all star with questionable leadership skills, possesses the “entitlement” gene. . .how many times has his presence inspired a playoff appearance? Oh, his legacy is pouting & injuries, dating back all the way to his truncated days (can almost count them on one hand. . .)

Oh, where did the Cadavers draft last year? Would that be #1 overall? Gotta love those results. . that Bennett is a helluva player. . .great pickup. . .wasted pick. . ..

Homer responses; need not apply. . .

We are in a subjective free zone here, OhioRaider. . .come back when you can offer something objective. . .I’ll be waiting. ..crickets. . .

  • Goldie7

    What else could we do?

  • 1960AutumnWind

Jekins flashed on punt returns. Made mistakes but did well fr converted QB. I think we are ok unless we draft a #1 rec. in 1st or 2nd. No no. 1 FAs out there.

  • Howard Benner

    I’m just joking. . .

I am on record as being a huge fan of Cooks. . .but he won’t last past the 22nd pick overall.

My draft eligible 1st round list. . .Sammie Watkins, Mike Evans, Brandin Cooks, Odell Beckham, Marquise Lee, Benjamin. . .

  • Myopinion

Holmes once he really got into the lineup was producing too. And now we add jones, and hopefully the good Shaub. I don’t think we’ll be bad at all at wr. But still don’t wanna pass on Watkins well regret it. Unless the choice is clowney, Mack. Then I can’t be mad.

  • 1960AutumnWind

Having a crap QB like Pryor will stunt any receivers stats.

  • Davy Jones

From Matt Smith’s new mock on NFL.com:

“Oakland Raiders #5: Johnny Manziel They would have preferred Watkins, but he’s gone. Selecting an OT looks bad for GM Reggie McKenzie, who let Jared Veldheer go when a reasonable deal could have been reached. Swing for the fences.”

    Yep.

  • IVRaider

The receivers looked much better with MM in there. He was accurate and had good timing. I think Schaub should at least be a slight upgrade over MM.

  • NewEra S&B

    Sack city. Raider nation.

  • Goldie7

Really nice to know that you guys have faith in our WRs. However, what should we do if one or two of our WRs get hurt in preseason or the regular season?.
Its cool to disagree with me, but you must admit that we are weak and thin in the WRs position, and drafting one or two WRs will not make an immediate impact.

  • NYCRaider

our current WRs are #2 and #3s. Drafting Watkins gives us that impact player we thought we had when we drafted dfragile. the addition of watkins makes our WR unit a top 10 in the NFL. Big improvement and will make schaub and our 1 good foot running backs more successful too

  • mikeschoice

It bought a year idiot. Can’t unload while roster in one year. You think they care what you think? They r selling you suckers seats and merchandise

  • Howard Benner

Does Moore really resemble a true #1 WR to you?!

That is the problem with stats; they can be more misleading than truthful assessments of value. . .

I like Moore; even have a D. Moore Nike game jersey; but he is woefully inconsistent & disappears way too much when the game is on the line. . .he seems to lose his concentration. . he’ll catch the ball on the slant route & then miss the next. . .

Somehow his personality seems to dictate “floating” instead of assertiveness. . .

He needs a bit of Steve Smith in his game. . .a transfusion. . .

  • Goldie7

True, but I thought a dominate WR will become a playmaker within two-three years at the most.

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

Injuries!?! You talking about injuries?!? Injuries?!?

  • Goldie7

    Absolutely. lol

  • http://www.raiders.com/ Drexl

it was a refreshing change to see the Raids start from the twenty or better more so than not this last year.

  • 0ak R8rs

Fck that douche. Nobody not being available is gonna trick Reggie into ruining his career by drafting The Hobbit. Not happening.

  • RaidO

    Moore sucks….

  • http://www.raiders.com/ Drexl

    eeyap

  • Lowdown_in_Beijing

If Manziel changed his name to Johnny Rocket, I’d be fine.

  • Davy Jones

More commenting on the ‘Selecting an OT looks bad’ part.

  • RaidO

Moore was considered the best WR last season? LOL.. Raiders need some WR’s..

  • NYCRaider

yes, but they can make an impact immediately like aj green, julio jones

  • the super genius dr robert

    U suck Moore

  • Myopinion

He’s got good special teams carma. Wasn’t his first game like first few plays a fumble recovery td?

  • the super genius dr robert

    I have said he’s not a #1

  • 0ak R8rs

That’s true. But Moore still sucks.

  • Goldie7

    Those two are rare.

  • RaidO

Moore= inconsistent and had some “issues” about work ethic going into the season..

  • NYCRaider

no doubt , but many feel watkins is that type of prospect

  • 0ak R8rs

Matthews is gonna be 5 times the OT Veldheer ever was. He already looks like a pro. I’d be fine w that pick.

  • Myopinion

Even Keenan Allen wasn’t even a first rd pick was making a big impact for the chargers.

  • NYCRaider

    good point

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

    Good Morning Raider Nation!!!

It’s a Beautiful Day to be A Raider Fan on the Tail end of the Cold Reality of the Atrocities that were committed During the Death Spiral of 2003- 2011 Isn’t it?

Just wanted to see how it looked before tomorrow AM.

  • inonewordraider

mostly positive and optimistic although the djax deal got me down. When you consider our division, we’re undoubtedly behind Denver and KC. The only way we’re better than one of those squads and SD is if Schaub returns to form and if Allen turns out to be a helluva coach. Allen being a good coach is not that far fetched in my mind because I thought the guys were completely overmatched last year yet we competed hard for most the year. Schaub returning to form is the one I doubt the most but MJD/DMAC/Murray combo can potentially take lots of pressure off and a flat out defensive stud at #5 is vital

  • Maoey Wowie

if we get Mack, Watkins, or Clowney i’d be ecstatic

  • RaidO

Most of the season rests on Schaub returning to form..Reggie and DA’s jobs depend on it. Hell of a gamble..

  • SR Raider

CBS sports just posted a pretty good summary of the Raider offseason so far:
Agent’s Take: Examining how the Raiders have spent their offseason
    http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/eye-on-football/24512459/agents-take-raiders-mckenzie-must-balance-quick-fixes-long-term-goals

  • Davy Jones

Okay, but LT wasn’t a need until Reggie let Veldheer walk. Creating a need where there wasn’t one that will require your 1st rounder to fill it doesn’t count as progress.
