Raiders sign local punter

The Raiders signed punter Daniel Zychlinski on Friday in a move designed to give incumbent Marquette King a break during offseason workouts and the Raiders insurance in case King gets injured.
King replaced Shane Lechler last season and showed that he has the ability to be a fixture for years to come.
Zychlinski, who played at Stanford from 2008-12, gets an opportunity to learn from King and perhaps get his work on videotape for other teams to see in case they need a punter at some point before or during the season.
Zychinski averaged 42.2 yards during his collegiate career. His 43.1 average his final season was the fifth-best total in Stanford history.

This team will compete for the playoffs.

  • PrometheusISgodoftheblog

team needs some young DLINE talent and they’ll be ready. can address that in the draft easily

  • irjonny

it’s tough to nail it down like that but i’ll try.

Carr has better arm than bortles. also bortles has “wait for him to be open” syndrome. Carr throws WRs open. Bortles is #2 QB after Carr for me so it’s a little closer than the others. but thats the main differences i see.

Carr simply has size over teddy. i like teddy. totally looks pro ready and is way accurate. great footwork etc. teddy’s slim frame worries me…..a lot. i see a lot of injuries and conditioning outings in his future.

Manziel is huge upside and brings star power. i actually like johnny. but Carr has perfect off field record, trust from team mates, head on straight. Carr is a leader on and off the field, also johnny does look run first a lot. would be good for him to sit a year too.

all in all its just my take. if it wasn’t for the schaub trade i might have a different view, but after a year learning and cleaning up some things i think Carr is above the rest come year two. imo we are in a perfect position to let that happen

  • irjonny

whew! its long winded but i responded to your question

  • the super genius dr robert

Best bet for our six picks is some combo of DT, DE, CB, QB, WR, and RB.

  • lefty12

We actually have a few young DTs. Whether they are any good or not remains to be seen.

  • PrometheusISgodoftheblog

if RM can trade down into the mid-late 1st round he should consider aaron donald. interior pass rusher like that would make a difference day 1 in the division

  • the super genius dr robert

    McGee is.

  • the super genius dr robert

    McGee

  • the super genius dr robert

    Oops. Wrong person.

  • Rico Stifler

    I agree on Donald.

  • lefty12

Look at the roster. We have 6 DTs and at least 3 or 4 are younger guys.

  • PrometheusISgodoftheblog

rams, browns and whiners are all potential trade down partners. rams could trade up their 13th pick for watkins or even robinson. lot of trade down possibilities

  • the super genius dr robert

Yeah. Troupe has some upside. The others are unknown.

  • irjonny

    Alex7 (and anyone else)

yes this is a highlight vid. but watch from about 1:00 on. these are elite NFL throws. single coverage throwing to the corner’s helmet. either its complete or its pass interference…..thats a big deal. some splitting coverage in seam routes, throwing the WR open and sitting him down as to not get hit big. making his pre-snap reads and committing when its there. using read progression when its not. just a sampling of what i see in Carr

and the defense sucked last year too. most points given up by a Raider team since 1961. need a change

  • DKnight007

It’s reggies job to draft stars. He is in a good position to do so in this draft. He can’t blow it. FA was used to fill holes with good vets who still have something to prove and who can teach the younger ones how to be pros and how to win.

  • DKnight007

    This team needed players/bodies…period

  • http://thebadtenants.com/ eternal pessimist

Every move we made upgraded the roster. Bummer to lose Veldheer, but sometimes you lose players. I’d put that more on Veldheer’s idiot brother taking over as his agent and his family medling than anything. I wouldn’t say that we got worse at the position either, questionable either way there. But we got better with every move made. the more you comment the more you seem to just be blindly hating, which truly makes you the black and white one here.

  • rioderek

No team lead by Dennis Allen will ever compete for a playoff spot. Bank on it !

  • Rico Stifler

I think we could trade down if Watkins is there at 5 with TB (7, 38). Then we could trade down again if manziel there at 7 then. I think the Titans (11, 42, 112) could be a team to trade up for Manziel. I’m gonna use the Walterfootball as a way for the board to fall since it goes to five rounds. At 11 go Donald, at 36 grab DT Jernigan like Walter projects. Go QB Garoppolo at 38 with the Bucs pick. At 42 I’d go CB Jason Verrett. Go WR Davante Adams at 67. In the fourth I’d grab DE Jackson Jeffcoat at 107 and ILB Yawin Smallwood at 112 with the Titans pick.

  • Tyler Angelica Miller

I think LB Frank Beltre has a good chance to make it on the 53 man roster as a backup LB, and special teams… Kaelin Burnett better watch out…would you all take a flier on Pat Angerer???

  • Tyler Angelica Miller

David Carter& Ricky Lumpkins both came in with the Cardinals…

  • Jon Train

    My Small Board:

    Bridgewater
    Watkins
    Mack
    Trade down
    Gilbert

  • Jon Train

And oh yeah….Michael Sam in the 4th plus FA Incognito….as well as a league mandated appearance on Hard Knocks.

  • jumpnjiminy

I’m changing my mind a bit…if he’s there at 5 I think we take Manziel.

If not, wait and take McCarron – I mean how are this guys throws NOT pro style? And against SEC defenses too.

@AdamSchefter: Fresh off his appearance at Saturday’s Final Four, Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel is flying to Oakland to spend tonight and Monday with Raiders

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

Best news this organization has had in years.

  • jumpnjiminy

As you can see below I’m finally coming around to the idea we grab him if he’s there at 5…

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

The Autumn Wind IS the perfect depiction of Johnny Manziel.
“Swaggering boisterously” “A Villian big and Bold”.
This is our guy. A born Raider.

  • jumpnjiminy

I stumbled into a Gruden piece on Johnny where he spent a lot of time with him interviewing/analyzing him etc. Johnny will be a starter and an instant winner with any team that takes him. Only risk was durability but that’s the case with any nfl qb these days much as the league tries to protect them!

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

    My draft board:
    1-Manziel QB
2-(trade down a few spots pick up a 5th we lost) – Davante Adams WR
    3- Anthony Johnson, DT LSU
    4- Michael Sam, DE/OLB Mizzou
5- *from trade, Marion Grice, RB ASU
7- Jonathan Dowling, FS Western Kentucky
    7- Seantrel Henderson, OT Miami
UDFA’s take a flyer on the whack job RB from San Diego State, QB Guyton from Ohio State, and some other DB’s.
    Beastly draft, IMO

  • jumpnjiminy

Yaaa Reggie and Dennis don’t screw it up!

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

The offense he will be in the NFL won’t have him on nearly, if much of any, designed QB runs like he had in college.
Scrambling QB’s are fine. Running QB’s are not, unless you are built like an ox like Cam.

  • SnBG

Good morning nation. Love the Manziel talk. If he isn’t there for us then it’s Teddy and Derek.

  • jumpnjiminy

Had a strange thought the other day…I was thinking our getting Schaub reminded me of when we got Jay Schroeder. Totally different circumstances and career paths but I couldn’t shake the feeling of how Schaub reminds me of Jay…

  • Que

Reggie just doing what he does like a normal gm. due diligence. Im putting my vote right here for history. No to Manziel. Yes to Teddy or Derek

  • Que

wow… thats scary. Remember bo jackson tim brown and marcus allen in buffalo and Jay just kept throwing ints

  • Que

Does the nation understand Johnny Manziel never had to call pass protections in college. He said himself! Thats a HUGE . Teddy B and Carr both can read defenses and make protection calls

  • jumpnjiminy

    A little nightmarish you’re right!

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

He can figure it out, he is super-smart.
Collegiate offers to Stanford and other brainaic schools out of HS.

  • 504 Raider

Saw Anthony Johnson in a restaurant the other day. He was at table next to me. He resembles JaMarcus a lot. Almost exact same size no lie..also looks like Tommie Kelly from neck up.

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

What’s your take on him as a player?

  • Myopinion

I will be very surprised if rm drafts a qb at 5. Even more surprised if its Manziel.has rm signed anyone who is flashy, or has a big personality?

  • Que

I’ll be torn if we draft him. Its gonna be fun to see how his career turns out after seeing how We raiderfans have cast our wish for Qb.

  • 504 Raider

Mixed. He was highly recruited coming out of high school and was dominant. Mostly because he was a man amongst boys. He was a bit of a disappointment at LSU because he didn’t dominate. He’s very solid just not dominant and he has the size. He does not have a motor like Donald but many don’t. The one thing he has that will make him successful in the pros is his maturity. He’s business and don’t get into trouble. Would be a solid pick for us in the 3rd or even better if in the 4th. Is a leader too.

  • Que

Its another example How long some of us have waited for a franchise Qb! I was young then but I didnt like Jay being starter. We had loaded teams then but Qb???? was the weakness. Thats why I get upset with how Reggie is held to such High expectations when the Great didnt have a history of drafting Qbs. Every organizations in nfl are trying just like us and failing

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

Seems like the new age DT’s in the league, quick, fast pass rusher type.
You can get the big fat, cloger guys more easily (like Fat Simms).

  • 504 Raider

Also can play end in a 3/4. To his credit LSU don’t ask their DTs to rush QB. They just clog lanes and disrupt the play from the middle and free up the ends and LBs.
