Manziel meeting with Raiders today, Monday

Quarterback Johnny Manziel is scheduled to meet with the Raiders in Oakland on Sunday as part of a pre-draft visit.
Manziel’s meeting with the Raiders will carry over into Monday, according to an ESPN report. Teams are permitted to host as many as 30 draft-eligible players in advance of the proceedings.
The Raiders own the rights to the No. 5 pick in this year’s NFL draft, with the first round taking place May 8. Manziel is one of a handful of quarterbacks considered worthy of a first-round selection.
The Raiders already found a starting quarterback for next season in a trade for Matt Schaub last month. However, Schaub will be 33 later this year, and the Raiders feel as if they now need to focus on finding a long-term solution at a position that has been in flux for the past decade or so.
Raiders coach Dennis Allen was one of eight head coaches that attended Manziel’s pre-draft workout at College Station, Texas, last month. Raiders offensive coordinator Greg Olson and quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo also made watched Manziel audition for prospective employers.
Manziel, Central Florida’s Blake Bortles, Louisville’s Teddy Bridgewater and Fresno State’s Derek Carr are part of a quarterback class this year that the Raiders are checking out thoroughly.
Manziel won the Heisman Trophy in 2012 as a freshman. He turned in another impressive season in 2013 and then decided to turn pro.

We have a short term team though. It should be much better… but a long term solution at QB would make us a contender every season. Not sure the free-agent mercenary fix is sustainable.

  • Papertiger

Yeah there was definitely a measure of stability in that organization when it went through that down season. Everyone was touting Luck’s ability to resurrect the franchise, but it wasn’t in such rough shape to begin with.

Now that their owner’s a pill-popper who had some chick OD in his townhouse, well…I guess we’ll see.

  • DutchRaid

Can you blame the supporting cast if they were not on the field?
Johnson was injured a lot last year..
    Tate hurt, broken ribs…
    Owen Daniels played 5 games…
    Arian Foster played 8 games…
Graham, missed at least 3 games…

  • AlDavisJr

That is the whole deal. As much as the GM has been slammed this spring, he still put a few better players into the lineup. But we ain’t there yet. If he hits on the draft, and we don’t have the injury demon hit us this season, we may be 8-8. That is a lot of improvement, given the schedule etc. With a few more additions thru FA and the draft next year, we might stand a good chance of getting into the playoffs in 2015.

1.The money could’ve, and still can be used alot more wisely than Schaub, if the route was to go QB at Five. 2. Because learning on the bench or on the Fly is the samething, as long as they learn.

If Matt Schaub has one back game, fans will be calling for the Rookie anyways, I think people would have more patients for a Rookie Qb.

  • Return

Wilson didn’t come out with Luck? I thought that was Kap.

  • Gdog

Are the players we have any better than Houstons backups though?

  • Return

Forgot about Foles. That is a damn impressive group. I’m trying to think of one better.

  • IAmAlwaysWrong

he missed 4 games due to an ankle injury. Played in 10 games total last season

  • Blackholepriest

Yeah I should’ve taking that into consideration part of his skillset.

  • IAmAlwaysWrong

Manziel & Bortles aren’t JaMarcus. Watkins probably isn’t Calvin, either

  • EDWARD TEACH

Which top tier talent has DA shown he can’t handle? Which impact players has he shown that he can’t coach up?

  • 2romes

With the young multiples we bring in, granted they’re good picks,we will build the future faster. What I’ve seen lately is, if you have a solid QB that is enough to make a team competitive.

  • BigBenRexor

I’m bias on Schaub obviously. Never thought much of him with the Texans even during his PB years. I think that a team with the talent the Texans had on offense and defense, there’s got to be a reason they never took the next step. It’s not like their talent got pillaged each year, they’re core was intact for way too long to be as mediocre as they were and for such a short time. I blame Schaub

  • IAmAlwaysWrong

i agree. Put Krapernick or Wilson on the Redskins or Colts and they don’t sniff the playoffs last year..

  • EDWARD TEACH

He was a man among boys in college. Still pissed that Al didn’t take him, and he could have. I remember cursing loud and long when we passed on him.

  • BigBenRexor

They won two games with a McGloin type QB, even though QB is a big deal, gotta think a better team could’ve done better than two wins

  • DutchRaid

Do you think a switch away from the ZBS scheme also could help Schaub? Dude was constantly on the run, bootlegging every which way and made some pretty ugly throws? Could that be a reason?

  • dplunk

not if they wanted the # 1 overall pick

  • R8drTahoe in SF

Dude, after Jamarcus this fan base is anything but patient. These people boo at the slightest hint of poor play by a quarterback. It’s brutal when there have been 65,999 fans booing the Raiders in the Coliseum. (not 66,000 cuz I don’t boo my team)

I’d much rather have them booing a 33 year old vet while the newb is learning from the bench, than to have them boo the young guy and possibly ruin his view of the fan/city/organization/confidence/etc.

And what players do you feel might have a stronger impact on the Raiders than Shaub might? Who could be/could’ve been (at that time) brought in to better position the team to win games?

  • BigBenRexor

Maybe, I can’t say i follow them too much so aside from Wayne, Mathis and Bethea, couldn’t really name anyone else on that team.

  • EDWARD TEACH

They were one special teams play from the Super Bowl a couple of years ago, and Matt Schaub was the starter.

  • IAmAlwaysWrong

sounds like excuses. good QB’s get it done. look at Tom Brady’s crap supporting cast last year

  • IAmAlwaysWrong

    #Ouch!

  • SilverNBlackPA

I think the top 3 are Bortles, Clowney and Mack in some order or another.

What does Cleveland do? Watkins or Manziel? Would figure it has to be one of those 2

  • EDWARD TEACH

Just about half, exactly. And he was the starter for their only two wins.

  • IAmAlwaysWrong

    new post, ladies

At some point you have to commit to your QB. I don’t know the last time we really did that. I use the Cutler example sometimes cuz the Bears have done EVERYTHING possible to make him successful. Drafting Jeffrey..acquiring Brandon Marshall and Bennett…picking up Bushrod for his blindside …firing Martz and Tice and bringing his QB coach in from Denver. Heck, they consult with him on personnel decisions.
Palmer? Here’s an UDFA and a 5th round draft choice to throw to. Oh by the way, we just traded your top TE target to Seattle.
If you are gonna invest in a QB…give him the tools he needs to succeed..realizing it IS the most important position on the field.

  • DutchRaid

I think Tom Brady’s crap was still better than what the Texans put on the field…a ZBS does not work if there isn’t a viable running game.

The point is that there has to be somebody there that can do the job. Who would Reggie have drafted last year that would be starting for us this year? Who was the free agent that he should have brought in to start?

Nobody seems to want to answer that question.

    +++++++++++++

That goes back to the Palmer debate, and personally, I don’t feel like going there today lol.

  • R8drTahoe in SF

How many drinks can you spike Bortles?

How many different meanings does the word NO have when it comes to s@x Bortles?

You gotta ask the important questions bro! :)

  • BigBenRexor

What year was that? Because the two years they went to the Playoffs, they beat the Bungles both times in the Wild Card and then lost the next week. Never made it to an AFC Championship series.

  • Return

Be nicer if every draft had a Cam Newton. You can get a Luck fairly routinely through the draft.

  • dplunk

Dwight Freeney, Pierre Garcon, Dallas Clark, Austin Collie, Phillip Wheeler, Joseph Addai, just to name a few more..(hardly chopped liver)

  • 2romes

I was impressed how Cam step up last year knowing the year before was not so great.

To me the following might scare off some suitors but I don’t forecast a significant slide down the draft charts. . .This is still my guy & I think the Raiders trade down, amass another second round pick & select Taylor Lewan in the first round. . .

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Former Michigan offensive tackle Taylor Lewan’s arraignment for three misdemeanor assault charges has been postponed from Tuesday until May.

The two-time Big Ten offensive lineman of the year, who is expected
to be a first-round pick in May’s NFL draft, will be charged with one
count of aggravated assault and two counts of assault or assault and
    battery in a Dec. 1, 2013, incident.

    Joe Robbins/Getty ImagesFormer
Michigan offensive tackle Taylor Lewan, who is facing assault charges
in connection with a Dec. 1, 2013, incident, will be in court on May 19.

He is scheduled to be in Michigan’s 15th District Court on May 19 in
front of judge Elizabeth Pollard Hines for arraignment and pretrial
hearings. The delayed date for the appearance also pushes his first date
in the matter from before the May 8-10 draft until after it.

Lewan’s attorney in the case, John Shea, said that moving the date of the court appearance is not uncommon.

“When an attorney is involved, it is common in this court for the
arraignment to be adjourned and combined with the next stage in the
process, the pretrial hearing,” Shea said in an email to ESPN.com. “In
this case, given the schedules of the parties and the available pretrial
dates of the court, the first available arraignment and pr trial date
was May 19. So that is the date I requested.”

The Ann Arbor News has reported the incident as an alleged fight with Ohio State fans.

At the NFL combine in February, Lewan denied any wrongdoing in the case.

“I went over the Ohio State incident once before” Lewan said in
Indianapolis. I wasn’t in any fight of any kind. I was actually breaking
something up and some guy said that I slugged him, but that’s not who I
am off the field, that’s not the kind of person I am.

“It might seem that way because of the way I play football, but that’s not the way I am as a person.”

Lewan is ranked No. 6 overall in ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay’s top 32 players available.

    Addai & Clark were toast.

Absolutely incorrect. Wilson is one of the absolute best qb’s in the league. Like I said all good qbs are game mangers. He does it all and he knows when to do it. The Colts had a very good team in place. Kap or Wilson would have easily taken them to the playoffs. They definitely would have taken the redskins.

This myth and hero worship of Luck is crazy. He is a better version of Carson Palmer. Smarter and more mobile. Just on the verge of being special but not there yet. RGIII the jury is still out on him. Was his bad season due to his injury or are we seeing the real RGIII? But neither one can hold a candle to Wilson or Kap or Cam.

  • Howard Benner

I think Watkins is Timmy Brown sans ACL injury.

That is something the NFL has never seen. That would be interesting. . .& afford a good match with Schaub’s passing game. . .slants, bubble screens. . then when Watkins’ game evolves. . he already is an upper echelon “jump ball” receiver, which Timmy was @ ND & as a Raider rookie. . .

  • Howard Benner

Evidence would support he didn’t do much learning

  • dplunk

I would still argue that Luck just as much if not MORE to work with on offense than Kaep, or Wilson

  • Howard Benner

Luck had a Beastmode or Frank Gore?

Perhaps before his ACL (due to an underthrown ball orchestrated by Luck) Reggie Wayne. . .but everyone else was a journeyman RB or a rookie WR or rookie TE. . .

Luck is upper echelon. His cerebral skills & vastly underrated physical skills; mobility translated into running the ball. . .forget his scramble late in the opener against our beloved Raiders?; are a much better package than what Kap, who really doesn’t progress through his passing options well, or Wilson, whose accuracy actually regressed a bit as a passer; substantiate the opinions of some that he potentially is better than Peyton Manning. . .

The Whiners have a top five NFL OL & one of the top five defenses in the league; Seattle has arguably the best defense in the league. . .Luck did it down the stretch & in the playoff comeback against the Chefs sans Wayne. . .

Working with more possessions due to your defense has to be factored in. . the colts employ a “bend but don’t break approach, , ,” The playoff win was against a Chefs team without Jamaal Charles, a top five RB. . .so Luck invariably had to counterbalance a mediocre @ best defense.

Kap & Wilson? Not so much. . .

  • Ron69

You’re right, i forgot him, hopefully can get him an extension or another free agent.
