Who’s left from Al Davis Raiders?

There’s lots of talk about how Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie wants “his guys,” speculation that only increased when left tackle Jared Veldheer and defensive end Lamarr Houston departed during free agency to the Cardinals and Bears.

With the departure of Terrelle Pryor _ Davis’ last draft selection in the 2011 supplemental draft _ only 11 players remain from the Davis regime of the 74 players currently listed on the Raiders roster. Chances are good a player or three will be whittled from that list by either trade or release by the time the 53-man roster is finalized.

In alphabetical order, the Davis Raiders:

TE David Ausberry
T Khalif Barnes
S Tyvon Branch
CB Chimdi Chekwa
LS Jon Condo
K Sebastian Janikowski
DB Taiwan Jones
RB Darren McFadden
WR Denarius Moore
FB Marcel Reece
C Stefen Wisniewski

Two Davis Raiders _ safety Charles Woodson and center/guard Kevin Boothe, returned to the Raiders under McKenzie after originally being drafted by Davis. Chekwa was drafted when Davis was in charge, released by McKenzie/Dennis Allen, then brought back on practice squad then promoted to the regular season.

Thanks willy new I could count on you

  • Guest123

Agree with the great Jerry Mack. Must be in the name.

  • Zymurge

If a trade back nets Evans and a solid 2nd round player, say a future starting DB, then even if Bortles becomes the next Matt Ryan (which is about his ceiling), I’d have no regrets. It takes 22 position players ot make a good football team. While QB is amongst the most important, it’s not as important as getting a star in one position and solid starter in another combined.

  • Thec

Wonder who Shob wants, Evans or Watkins?

  • Guest123

let me see, do I want to take the ferrari out for a spin today or the lamborghini?

  • the super genius dr robert

@Jerrymcd: On conference call, Mel Kiper Jr. says if Raiders stay at No. 5, three most likely picks are WR Mike Evans, OT Taylor Lewan, LB Khalil Mack.

I’ve been saying Evans could be the pick.

Reggie loves tall wrs and DA is an A&M guy.

  • Zymurge

He’s still coloring it for release later this week, but having issues finding crayons with the right Seahwak shade of teal.

  • Thec

Do you consider evans a reach at 5?

  • the super genius dr robert

@Jerrymcd: I’m told the Raiders like Michigan OT Taylor Lewan better than either Greg Robinson (Auburn) or Jake Matthews (Texas A&M).

Mentioned this earlier. The draft will always surprise.

  • SilverNBlackPA

Hot damn, Jerry Mac says the Raiders like Lewan better than Robinson or Matthews.

I’ve been saying this for WEEKS. Hire me, Reg, I bet I work cheaper than the rest of your scouts. :-)

  • Jon Train

ZERO power…CAN’T set the edge…questionable hustle…the idea of him as the #1 overall pick is laughable. He’s a 3rd and long edge rusher and nothing more.

Stop being slaves to the media hype machine and watch him play.

    LOL good one Willy

  • willy91137

Watkins his run after the catch makes him look good you throw a 2 yard screen and he goes 80 yards that’s 80 yards on your throwing record

  • R8erEduc8er

Lol @ hot damn. Thought it was only a Southern saying. Southern boy here.

  • the super genius dr robert

I wouldn’t draft him before the third round.

To me, he’s an Al Davis “flyer pick” based on athleticism.

Reminds me more of Aundray Bruce than Bruce Smith.

  • inonewordraider

    Andre Johnson most resembles evans

  • jesusraiderjim

That’s a pretty interesting question. Any one who says they know the answer is full of it too.

  • 559 Raider 87

I know Im in the minority, but Id take Evans over Watkins. If we grab him at 5 Ill be ok with that

  • the super genius dr robert

Not really. He’s usually listed between 6-10 and most have him around 7.

But he’s big and fast and has great hands and makes a lot of plays.

  • 559 Raider 87

    Andre 2.0

  • the super genius dr robert

    I’m almost there myself.

  • Thec

You know the narrative, the Raids take him… “They reached”

  • jesusraiderjim

I want Evans but I want him in a trade back and a 2nd rounder.

  • kuhlest

not sure I agree with that statement….only because if you have 21 solid starters and no QB, you will still be no good (look at Seattle before Wilson, or SF before Kapernick, Houston last year)….but a good QB can make an avg team better (reference NE, NO, GB)……but I do appreciate the debate and can’t wait for May 8th and in the end we are all trying to predict what RM/DA feel about it.

  • Thec

That was what i was alluding too…

  • Zymurge

I heard that he’s causing quite a stir at Pikes. Apparently he tends take a fish, stare at the guy he’s going to through it to, inexplicably run around for awhile, then lob it in his general direction with about 4 seconds of hang time.

Then a few people step out of the crowd to talk about first how exciting he is and then to make a bunch of excuses for why he can’t just throw the fish accurately to the other guy like all the other fish mongers.

  • kuhlest

    isn’t he more of a 3-4 olb or a 4-3 slb….?

  • jesusraiderjim

Just spit water all over. LMAO Thanks.

  • Jon Train

Sounds great but I’m not sure Tampa Bay at 7 would pass up on him. This seems like a deep draft for WR, which is good for us.

  • willy91137

Look at his pad level he goes in damn near straight up he has to lower the Levels was not more leverage he gets to the NFL lineman in the NFL will push them over like nothing’s

  • kuhlest

    #crazytalk

  • Jon Train

There are at least 5-6 plays in this game where he gets manhandled like a rag doll. One chip block by MJD will have him shook for the rest of the game.

  • kuhlest

have you seen hoe explosive and physical SW is after the catch?

  • hwnrdr

    I don’t know…I’d rather have Watkins…but oh well

  • Davy Jones

Clueless, huh? I think there needs to be a little healthy skepticism around here, and the collective circle jerk about Reggie’s rebuild needs a reality check. Yeah, we WERE 8-8. Are you telling me that we ARE going to do better in 2014? 2015?

  • kuhlest

I think there are 5 top flight/blue chip players and then the rest….

    Clowney
    Watkins
    Mack
    Robinson
    Bortles

  • kuhlest

we don’t have the fire power nor the team depth to go up in draft…only back and acquire more picks

  • R8erEduc8er

    NeW pOsT

  • R8erEduc8er

He looked hurt. Hobbling, especially at 00:20

  • kuhlest

well I am thinking that BB might just beat Schaub out in camp…..dude is a football player first and QB second, and I mean that in a good way…we will have to wait and see, but BB is only QB worth top 10 pick otherwise wait til rd 2-4

  • kuhlest

not sure what is so funny (collective laugh) we need a QB…

Bortles is a 6’5″ 232 lb athletic winner at the position….smart, tough, able to make all the throws, best in class under pressure…what’s so funny?

do you have any reasons or are you just naive about the QB posn/player?

  • kuhlest

I know Gru plays nice with them but I think I can tell a lot about the kids during the half hour show…didn’t love McCarron, Boyd, even Manziels time with Gruden

  • kuhlest

he might last to our 2nd rd pick

  • Zymurge

Al would “reach” to draft him in the 2nd (after a trade up) and then convert him to fullback.

  • Zymurge

Sounds like an ideal scenario to trade down to about 8 or 9. One of those (not likely Mack) will still be there, because some stupid team(s) will jump up to get one or two of the QBs.

In fact, WalterFootball’s latest mock has just that happening: http://walterfootball.com/draft2014.php

  • kuhlest

he does seem to get defeated double team after double team, but one thing that does is free up other guys on defense to make plays

  • kuhlest

Lewan is the real deal…not sure better than Robinson but def. better than Mathews

  • kuhlest

meh, he would be fine anywhere from 5-10

  • kuhlest

    nope!

  • kuhlest

Mel Kiper jr. is not the best pre draft predictor …just saying
