Kiper on Raiders

ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. thinks it would be wise for the Raiders to trade down and get additional picks for the second consecutive year.

Last season, the Raiders held the No. 3 overall pick and then traded back to No. 12 in order to get a second-round pick at No. 42.

So instead of getting only cornerback DJ Hayden, whom general manager Reggie McKenzie said the Raiders would have taken at No. 3, they also got Florida State offensive tackle Menelik Watson at No. 42.

A similar maneuver could pay off for McKenzie again, given that the Raiders currently don’t have selections in the fifth and sixth rounds. After the Raiders fourth-round pick at No. 109, they aren’t scheduled for another pick until No. 219 in the seventh.

The Raiders have two additional picks in the seventh round at No. 235 and No. 247 for deals involving quarterbacks Carson Palmer (Cardinals) and Terrelle Pryor (Seahawks).

“I like the trade down possibility a lot,’’ Kiper said. “They’ve got holes at wide receiver, defensive tackle, outside linebacker, corner. The list goes on and on. They let some really good players go. Lamarr Houston is a real good player. Jared Veldheer is a real good player.’’

Kiper sees Clemson wide receiver Sammy Watkins as a “no-brainer’’ if Oakland stays at at No. 5, but ranked Texas A&M wide receiver Mike Evans, Michigan tackle Taylor Lewan and Buffalo outside linebacker Khalil Mack as the most likely available picks.

In Kiper’s most recent mock draft, he had the Raiders getting Mack, a 6-foot-2, 251-pound outside linebacker that some analysts see as the best player in the draft.

McKenzie and coach Dennis Allen have said they will look at add a quarterback. Kiper’s most likely candidates from the second-round or later to wind up in Oakland include Jimmy Garappolo of Eastern Illinois, A.J. McCarron of Alabama, Aaron Murray of Georgia and Tom Savage of Pittsburgh.

Kiper rates local product David Fales, considered a third-round possibility by ESPN analyst and former quarterback Trent Dilfer, as a fifth-round possibility.

    3 wins in A ROW
    That would be awesome
    And Miraculous

  • 0ak R8rs

    Nope.

  • R8erEduc8er

Don’t worry. It’s my birth month, they’ll come through.

Do GM’s get fired midseason? That is pretty rare. Usually the coach goes in season, and the GM gets canned in the offseason.

  • Dr. Hunter S. Thompson

    yup.

  • 0ak R8rs

    Sounds like a bet. $20?

  • RTF916

Have they decided? I think it’s Vick. Either way, I think they pull it out. Every week is the Super Bowl from this point forward for Rex, plus with the pressure in NY.

  • r8ter4evr

They beat the overpriced Angels and Rangers the last two years

  • Dr. Hunter S. Thompson

    how about 20,000,000?

  • 0ak R8rs

No. Of course they haven’t decided. But they want Geno smith to start, so they will look for every excuse to make that happen. Right or wrong.

  • RTF916

Against those opponents? I’m weighing opponent strength in my advanced scientific prediction formula.

  • inonewordraider

    here you go

  • Dr. Hunter S. Thompson

    it happens.

  • TrevJo

Two of those home games you have as wins will basically be neutral games:
    Miami
    San Francisco
That said, I am never a fan of predicting W/L per-game before the season. In particularly I highly doubt home field will mean that much to us that we’ll go 7-1 at home and 2-6 on the road.

  • 0ak R8rs

No. How about $20? We can paypal it. Easy. Barring injury to either player, Smith starts week 1 for Jets. Booked?

  • 0ak R8rs

    Yea. I saw the movie.

  • Dr. Hunter S. Thompson

    you are an idiot.

  • TrevJo

    yep
I predict 10 total INTs in that game

  • JLofty

    new post boys….

  • RTF916

The formula I used to make these predictions is about as complicated as launching nuclear codes. All you need to do is read them and call your bookie.

    HA!

  • R8erEduc8er

    Who do we play?

  • 0ak R8rs

Hrm. Well apparently you’re a puzzy. I’d rather be an idiot than a puzzy.

  • Dr. Hunter S. Thompson

    i don’t drool.

  • TrevJo

look on the bright side. from week 5 on we don’t have to travel further east than Cleveland

  • R8erEduc8er

The sheep are on their way!

  • RTF916

Were we? For some reason thought we were 1-3. Maybe so.

  • Dr. Hunter S. Thompson

    $20?

    what’s the point?

Positive thing is 3 of the teams are in our division..

I see it as my prerogative to state I was right when I got bashed by 5 or 6 guys here for stating that Armstrong was doped and Bruyneel was the man behind. first time I stated this was in ’05 and have been ever since. last time we had the discussion was during the ’12 season and still people believed I was wrong. but bullies always loud, and seem to have a bad memory..

I seldom see any sports talk here anymore, only loudmouths and airheads bashing each other..

  • Angelo DeBortoli

We can only hope Watkins is there at #5. The trade offers would be coming in and we could let them out bid each other.

The niners would have to cough up their 1st rd pick, their two 2nd rd picks & a 3rd. I am not sure if that adds up per the “draft chart” but I would love to have Four prospects from the top 50!

  • SR Raider

All I see is the Pats, Niners, Seattle and our AFC west enemies. Teams you gotta beat regardless if you want to be good

  • Angelo DeBortoli

Watkins is like a Percy Harvin..w/o the injuries. I think he is a big time play maker. A healthy P. Harvin is a great player to have on your team

  • TrevJo

9 games against playoff teams from last year

DA & Reg doesn’t have tons on the line?

    LOL

  • the510

Well I’m happy we got rid of Pryor, probably the most talented athlete on the team, in anticipation of the league’s most difficult schedule. Tennis visor coach is toast.
