Carr saying, doing all right things as first training camp nears

Raiders rookie quarterback Derek Carr makes no pretense about where he stands on the depth chart as he embarks upon his first training camp.
“I’m starting to learn how to be a NFL quarterback and those things,” Carr said a few minutes after he reported to training camp in Napa on Wednesday, “but I still got a long way to go. So, I’m going to rely on my coaches and the team to help me get through my first camp.”
The Raiders selected Carr in the second round of the NFL draft in May. He is projected as the primary backup to Matt Schaub, with Matt McGloin and veteran Trent Edwards also in the mix.
Coach Dennis Allen and general manager Reggie McKenzie said during the offseason that they envision Schaub being the starter for this year and beyond. Yet, it’s no secret that they’re also high on Carr as the long-term answer at a position that has been in flux since Rich Gannon retired.
Even so, Carr isn’t getting too far ahead of himself for now. He is saying and doing all the right things, falling in line the way veterans expect from an unproven player.
“Hopefully Matt (Schaub) doesn’t get too annoyed at me for asking too many questions,” Carr said, “because I’m going to ask even more now. I’m going to try and pick his brain as much as I can.”
At some point, Carr will get an opportunity to use what he learns in a regular-season game.
There are those who wouldn’t be surprised to see Carr replace Schaub at some point this season, though that’s unlikely if Schaub reverts to the form he displayed with the Houston Texans prior to the 2013 season, when Schaub struggled.
Last season, Matt Flynn arrived at training camp as the presumptive starter. Third-year player Terrelle Pryor beat out Flynn for the starting job based on a strong training camp.
For now, Carr said, he’s just concerned with “rookie questions” such as, “Where do I park when I get here?”

    Cant wait til camp tomorrow

  • FourMoreYears

SnBG can’t guarantee 8 wins any more than I can guarantee 12. So if you’re going to dream, why not dream big?

  • BigBenRexor

I’m going to try and pick his brain as much as I can.

Even our backup QB is picking off Schaub.

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

    Okay. Two points.

  • mikeschoice

yeh last year crock said how impressive pryor was. questioning reggie on talent evaluation?

  • r8ter4evr

Can’t wait for my next beer!!

  • seymour bush

Last year after being up in camp I told everyone on this blog that Pryor was night and day better than the year before. 1000% better. Of course I also said 1000 X 0 is still zero.

guess what felluz, we got a squad this year. better than the hue Jackson, tom cable era squad, playerwise. our front four lacks depth, so if Woodley or Tuck go down we’re screwed, but although no obvious double digit sack studs I c the unit as a whole wreaking havoc. sio mack and burnett olb’s, real good. branch woodson brown hayden rodgers and rooks secondary, solid. our massive oline will create holes so one of our rb’s will look good and schaub will have the play action game goin to take a lot of pressure off. comp amongst te’s and wr’s will cause the cream to rise. only real concern is Penn’s pass blocking, even if schaub flops we have capable backups. Spotlight is on the coaching, cuz we have a squad felluz

  • 909RaiderLifer

Weather is supposed to get into the 90′s up there for the next few days..Guess we’ll find out soon enough who came to camp in shape, and who ate to much of mom’s cookin…

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

    He didn’t say that,
He said the guy had been working hard and had improved.

  • nolimits33

Raiders win 5 games this year, and Reggie will say we are improving.

  • WILLY91137

I know this team will be better this year than last how much better I don’t know and nobody on this board has a clue either

  • seymour bush

If we win five games we will be improving.

  • SnBG

Welcome to the Altar of SnBG. Like this post!

  • Blackholepriest

    Here we go……lol

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

    About 2-3 games better.

  • 909RaiderLifer

Got mine on ice, getting COLD…T minus 1hr. 12mins 38sec.

  • Ted Stosterone

Basically we need most everyone to play as expected, and for 5 or 6 guys to really come on big-time. And it seems to me that’s very possible. There are a lot of guys who’ve shown flashes and could be impact players.

  • SnBG

Of course you look at the glass half full. The only time you sir would look at it half empty is when you think about how good the first half tasted.

  • Blackholepriest

Carr maybe a capable backup. MAYBE!!

If we see the mascot. We’ll be 4-12 again.

  • SaintKaufman

I started reading this and was getting all, “what the..”, then I kept going and was like, LMAO!!

  • inonewordraider

watching the 2013 raiders nfl network vid and started really analyzing. I had absolutely no hope last year but our team is dramatically different. I think it starts with the trenches. sims is underrated add smith tuck and Woodley we’ve got a push. then our massive oline will force one of the rb’s to look like a stud and take pressure off whoever ends up starting qb. wr’s and te’s continue to improve (streater holmes rivera even moore got better) add jones. i’m excitied for the first time since we got carson palmer, although this outcome will be better

  • WILLY91137

But the problem is all the teams in the AFC West have gotten much better since cable and Hu were here the AFC West when they were here was easy not so much now days

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

To heII with that! It’s almost 5 pm one time zone over.

  • inonewordraider

our division is tough sure. but we have some cupcakes that we play as well. kc and san diego are beatable with this roster. by the end of the year Denver might be too

  • Blackholepriest

    That’s my guess…..

  • SnBG

I do, step up to the altar of optimism man.

  • inonewordraider

we still predicted to win 4 games in vegas? if so i’m going next we’ll i’ll drop big money on the over, and I never bet for/against raiders

  • SaintKaufman

I upvoted this out of peer pressure.

  • WILLY91137

I hope you are right rivers goes down and so does Manning we just won the AFC West wop eeeee

  • Blackholepriest

What’s soo massive about the Oline?

And why do you think it’s any different than any other Oline?

    It’s basically average, nothing special.

  • inonewordraider

Donald penn 6’5 gabe Jackson 336 Austin howard 6’7 Watson 6’5. massive men, just straight bigger than the opposition, power blocking try to stop us

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

    4 1/2 last I heard.

  • SnBG

If it hadn’t been for bonehead Pryor we would have won a few more games last year so this year with a real team and a real QB we will do very well. Pryor cost us at least 3 games last year that Schaubie would have won for us.

  • WILLY91137

What’s that one of the Knights of the round table

  • SnBG

Some people are so fond of ill-luck that they run half-way to meet it.

  • WILLY91137

    I hope you are right

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

I didn’t. But I gave him his due before anybody did. Can’t now. Double digits aren’t allowed.

  • SnBG

He’s not your boy Pryor huh.

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

Put your book of Quotations down.

  • SaintKaufman

Too late! Looks like BHP put it over the top.

  • inonewordraider

still think him and mcgloin have a chance to develop, but both sucked

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

Had Quick Draw been properly assessed and prepped in training camp/pre season, he may well have won the starting job, played all 16 and won 3-4 more games.

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

Still says 9 here. Someone needs to get their upvotes up to speed!

  • SaintKaufman

Man, you do have low bandwidth!

  • SnBG

Here’s what Pryors play made him look like. A donuthead.
