Raiders cornerback DJ Hayden had surgery for stress fracture, opens camp on PUP

Cornerback DJ Hayden had surgery to repair a stress fracture following the team’s mandatory minicamp and will open training camp on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, coach Dennis Allen said Thursday.

The Raiders will open training camp with Carlos Rogers and Tarell Brown working with the first team as starting cornerbacks. Rogers will slide inside in the nickel defense, with Chimdi Chekwa and rookie TJ Carrie playing corner.

Hayden hurt his right ankle during the first organized team activity in May, at which point Allen said he was “light years ahead’’ of the pace set as an injury-wracked rookie season.

Initial tests showed no problems, Allen said. However, when Hayden failed to show progress, a second MRI detected a stress fracture and Allen said a surgical procedure was done approximately a month ago.

“I wish I had a time frame, I really don’t know what it’s going to be,’’ Allen said. “It’s disappointing for him and for me because he’s a guy we were counting on being able to step up and help us this year and he’s a young player and he needs the reps.’’

Allen said he has seen players return from such procedures in as little as four weeks but sometimes as long as eight. In any event, there is a chance Hayden could not be available for any of the 13 training camp practices in Napa.

A rookie first-round pick out of Houston, Hayden missed much of his rookie training camp and workout time after surgery to remove scar tissue related to his trauma surgery in college. He was out after eight games last season and had sports hernia surgery.

Other players who will not be able to practice for the Raiders during their first workout Friday are tight end Nick Kasa (hip flexor), and guard Lucas Nix (knee). Safety Usama Young (quad) and cornerback Keith McGill (ankle) were injured during the team’s conditioning drill Thursday and may join those players on PUP.

Players who were injured away from the team while training included defensive tackle Stacy McGee (thumb) and defensive tackle C.J. Wilson (hamstring), who will open camp on the non-football injury list.

Outside linebacker Kevin Burnett, a starter last season, is expected

  • Breaking_Black

This is really only bad news for people that expected much out of Hayden in camp anyways.

  • DJ Johnny

If these injuries are the reason Reggie was sitting on 11 mill and he spends it on decent players to come in and replace Hayden…and EVERYBODY FRIGGIN ELSE it seems…then I would get it.

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

No. but it likely is. the most common stress fracture of the foot is metatarsal which is in the middle(Lisfranc) area of the foot.

  • JerryMcDonalds#1Fan

lol – i’ve torn a lot of labrums!

  • DutchRaid

Damn, if we only held Pryor a little longer…we could have traded straight up…I mean he is better than Russell Wilson!

  • Elliot

Does anybody know if there were any good db’s in the Japan Bowl this year?

  • RaiderCDE

DJ will be on PUP most of the year – like Burris was last year. He needs another 4 weeks min to even practice – and then he’s out of shape and still way too raw – might as well IR him and get someone that can play this year.

  • Silver&BlackBleeder

I’m gonna cop one of those weeble-wobble Raider tackling dummies from the Raider Image and name it DarrenJ McHayden…you gotta be F’n kiddin’ me…
