Raiders cornerback DJ Hayden had surgery for stress fracture, opens camp on PUP

Cornerback DJ Hayden had surgery to repair a stress fracture following the team’s mandatory minicamp and will open training camp on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, coach Dennis Allen said Thursday.

The Raiders will open training camp with Carlos Rogers and Tarell Brown working with the first team as starting cornerbacks. Rogers will slide inside in the nickel defense, with Chimdi Chekwa and rookie TJ Carrie playing corner.

Hayden hurt his right ankle during the first organized team activity in May, at which point Allen said he was “light years ahead’’ of the pace set as an injury-wracked rookie season.

Initial tests showed no problems, Allen said. However, when Hayden failed to show progress, a second MRI detected a stress fracture and Allen said a surgical procedure was done approximately a month ago.

“I wish I had a time frame, I really don’t know what it’s going to be,’’ Allen said. “It’s disappointing for him and for me because he’s a guy we were counting on being able to step up and help us this year and he’s a young player and he needs the reps.’’

Allen said he has seen players return from such procedures in as little as four weeks but sometimes as long as eight. In any event, there is a chance Hayden could not be available for any of the 13 training camp practices in Napa.

A rookie first-round pick out of Houston, Hayden missed much of his rookie training camp and workout time after surgery to remove scar tissue related to his trauma surgery in college. He was out after eight games last season and had sports hernia surgery.

Other players who will not be able to practice for the Raiders during their first workout Friday are tight end Nick Kasa (hip flexor), and guard Lucas Nix (knee). Safety Usama Young (quad) and cornerback Keith McGill (ankle) were injured during the team’s conditioning drill Thursday and may join those players on PUP.

Players who were injured away from the team while training included defensive tackle Stacy McGee (thumb) and defensive tackle C.J. Wilson (hamstring), who will open camp on the non-football injury list.

Outside linebacker Kevin Burnett, a starter last season, is expected

Kinda nervous once they start hitting?

  • Elliot

I know he is on pup…but what for what extent

More injury news; Menelik Watson scheduled for an MRI on his lower right leg tomorrow.

  • FourMoreYears

If we can just get him to lie down in front of the defensive lineman, that’ll probably be an improvement over last year. At least he’ll slow them down when they have to step over him.

  • ComptonRaider

    lmao

  • Elliot

    You almost got me

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

“He needs another 4 weeks min to even practice” — That’s if he starts the regular season on PUP. Right now, he can begin practicing the minute he passes his physical.

  • Breaking_Black

lmao. that would’ve broke this site.

  • Silver&BlackBleeder

    Exactly.

  • RaidingTexas

He’s trying to Dakota you guys.

  • Lowdown_in_Beijing

It might be a typo, maybe he broke it with a drill (Milwaukee, DeWalt, etc.).

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

Most of these guys will be off PUP by next week. Relax.

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

who tweeted that it was the foot and not the ankle? Because the ankle is pretty much the fibula and tibula, which aren’t near as complicated, heal faster, and don’t take the same abuse as the metatarsals in the foot. And nobody has said that it is the metatarsels. There are some other minor fractures that can occur im the foot.

  • Gdog

That might have been enough against Mathis for a win vs Indy. He let him run right by to block air.

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

If he’d only spelled Vic correctly.

  • DJ Johnny

    Is that true?

  • TrevJo

Toilet Paper 2 would have still found a way to choke

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

    Nix is Ironman.

  • Gdog

I liked Burnett last year. Did someone tell Reggie?

  • RaidingTexas

    @VicTafur

Back to Hayden. First MRI on ankle showed nothing. Didn’t get better. Second MRI revealed stress fracture (foot). Best guess is 4-8 weeks

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

and his technique requires very little practice.

  • Elliot

    Lol

  • Gdog

Next only to Barnes. They will never go away…

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

That’s not ’til Teusday. Not sure how many will be left.

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

We know. It’s just PUPpy love.

  • Elliot

Brandon Moss! Yes 3rd granny this year

  • ComptonRaider

Who else was nervous seeing the players carrying their own luggage?

  • Silver&BlackBleeder

I wanted to know the same thing myself..looked it up though just now and Scott Blair from CSN is saying it’s definitely the foot

  • DutchRaid

    Don’t worry, I heard it was just a VD…

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

Most common cause of stress fracture is overworking.

  • DJ Johnny

What a freaking bummer w/ all these guys injured. It’s like someone just took a hypodermic needle to the optimism balloon.

Can we have some GOOD news for once?

  • Heck Legler

What a jerk, letting his bone fracture like that. Really greedy and clearly he’s some kind of wimp for not disobeying medical advice and practicing anyway. Not like the John Waynes that hang out in here, typing through the pain…

  • DutchRaid

Think we will have the pleasure of seeing Jim Johnson pitch today?

  • Dakota

Good news is that McFadden looks fast.

Good to know that the Raiders KNEW DJ had a surgery a month ago and yet did Squawdoosh in even bringing in any other DB’s to look at with the 10 million in cap space.

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

Again: Most of these PUPs will be back to normal by Monday or Tuesday at the latest. No big deal.

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

    He was released today

  • DJ Johnny

You tried. I still don’t get it…but thanks.

  • DutchRaid

    Including the new Burnett money?

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

What other DBs were available since minicamp?

  • DutchRaid

    SWEET! That is good news!

  • BigBenRexor

We’re waiting for the 2nd wave of the 5th wave that’s out there.

  • RaiderCDE

Usama Young is another injury prone(r).

  • DJ Johnny

Then I need to educate myself on what pup means. I didn’t know it was a short term (as in days not weeks) designation.

  • TrevJo

$9.3M before cutting Burnett. $12.8M after.

  • DJ Johnny

It’s 11.2 mill or something now I think.

  • TrevJo

There’s a difference between PUP in preseason and PUP for regular season

  • scinfidel

4-8 weeks from; time of surgery or now??

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

If you’re PUP in training camp, you’re still on the active roster and can begin practicing as soon as you pass your physical.

Now if your PUP status lasts to the regular season, that’s when we get into the “Can’t practice for X number of weeks” thing.

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

Stress fractures of the ankle and foot. Red circle bad!
