Raiders cornerback DJ Hayden had surgery for stress fracture, opens camp on PUP

Cornerback DJ Hayden had surgery to repair a stress fracture following the team’s mandatory minicamp and will open training camp on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, coach Dennis Allen said Thursday.

The Raiders will open training camp with Carlos Rogers and Tarell Brown working with the first team as starting cornerbacks. Rogers will slide inside in the nickel defense, with Chimdi Chekwa and rookie TJ Carrie playing corner.

Hayden hurt his right ankle during the first organized team activity in May, at which point Allen said he was “light years ahead’’ of the pace set as an injury-wracked rookie season.

Initial tests showed no problems, Allen said. However, when Hayden failed to show progress, a second MRI detected a stress fracture and Allen said a surgical procedure was done approximately a month ago.

“I wish I had a time frame, I really don’t know what it’s going to be,’’ Allen said. “It’s disappointing for him and for me because he’s a guy we were counting on being able to step up and help us this year and he’s a young player and he needs the reps.’’

Allen said he has seen players return from such procedures in as little as four weeks but sometimes as long as eight. In any event, there is a chance Hayden could not be available for any of the 13 training camp practices in Napa.

A rookie first-round pick out of Houston, Hayden missed much of his rookie training camp and workout time after surgery to remove scar tissue related to his trauma surgery in college. He was out after eight games last season and had sports hernia surgery.

Other players who will not be able to practice for the Raiders during their first workout Friday are tight end Nick Kasa (hip flexor), and guard Lucas Nix (knee). Safety Usama Young (quad) and cornerback Keith McGill (ankle) were injured during the team’s conditioning drill Thursday and may join those players on PUP.

Players who were injured away from the team while training included defensive tackle Stacy McGee (thumb) and defensive tackle C.J. Wilson (hamstring), who will open camp on the non-football injury list.

Outside linebacker Kevin Burnett, a starter last season, is expected

When did Flowers get picked up?

  • DJ Johnny

    Ahh. Ok. Thanks.

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

Time of surgery, and we’re already just past four weeks.

Basically what I get from you is Lisfranc is an area of the foot. So a “Lisfranc injury” could be a number of things. Like a knee injury.

  • Dakota

Don’t worry guys, those awesome June 1st cuts should be getting signed any day now!

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

If Da’ snot lying, it likely isn’t a Lisfranc or really minor. That’s a big if.

If you think Hayden will be good to go in 4 weeks I got a package of viatical settlements to sell you.

  • TrevJo

I’ve got the solution. We trade for Aqib Talib. Makes us better and hurts Denver. It’s a fool-proof plan!

  • DJ Johnny

I know. Nauseating. It’s the same stuff every year. Brady and the Pats…Peyton Manning and the Broncos…the Jets…the Eagles…

Raiders can at least give us something legit to gripe about by winning.

  • TrevJo

Brady and Manning can’t retire soon enough

  • Dakota

Lisfranc is a tearing of the ligaments or a broken bone of the mid foot.

  • seymour bush

What are you ladies crying about now? Injuries? Hey, newsflash, “this just in, it’s football! Guys get hurt!”

  • plunkhead

Bummer DJ. I pray you heal quickly and get on the field to help the Raiders

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

6 weeks. and then the team has 21 days or something to decide or it’s off to IR land for you.

  • DJ Johnny

Isn’t that what they used to call Life settlements? I know a guy who made alot of money selling those things.

Sad thing is they haven’t started playing football yet.

Yup, individual ones are OK, the “packaged” ones are a giant scam and borderline Ponzi scheme.
    Unregulated as well.

  • DutchRaid

    Exactly!

  • TrevJo

    Some available CBs:
    Asante Samuel (33)
Terrell Thomas (29, tore ACL in 2011 and 2012)
Jabari Green (32, not actively searching for a team i.e. not in shape)
    Drayton Florence (33)

    Whatever happened to Cortland Finnegan?

  • Dakota

    Huff…

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

That’s regular season PUP, not training camp PUP. Different things.

  • plunkhead

It would be nice if the organization was not so secretive about injuries. Did it make any difference to tell us a month ago so we could wish him well or hold out on the info till today?
Makes no sense, especially for a team that has not broke 500 in over a decade

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

I was adding to your post.

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

The beginning of the end of the Chaz Schilins era was a stress fracture in the foot as well.

  • DJ Johnny

Who gets hurt on those the people selling them? The company offers a settlement while still alive to the policy holder…and when he/she dies they cash in. 100k policy for 70k…the policy holder gets all that $$$ and the “investors” get a nice 30k profit when they die. That’s how it was kind of explained to me.

  • AlDavisJr

Right! Denver is dying to let him go!

  • Dan78

Jerry holding down the fort while Corky is sipping Whiner wine and eating Harbaugh cheese…..

  • BigBenRexor

There is another former Raider option that I refuse to say for the fear of it coming true.

  • Gdog

So if Reggie dumps Burnett as expected, he will then be sheetcannning two of his top three run stoppers (according to PFF) from last year. Houston was three, Burnett one.

The only good thing we did last year was stop the run (13th)… after a decade of being in the bottom 16.

    Shrug.

    What could go wrong?

  • BigBenRexor

DJ’s biggest regret is that he won’t get a chance to pick off Matt Schuab.

  • DutchRaid

You think if teams can run all over us, it might improve are secondary stats?

  • Dakota

    Money ball!

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

Yes, but the “investor” has to pay the premiums. Old lady lives for 10 years, you pay all the premiums. Miss one, you lose company retains the policy.
And the packaged ones you aren’t buying it on one person, it is a group. And you get ripped off all the time. Stay away from viaticals.

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

    Gotcha.

  • Dakota

    It did in 2006.

  • RaiderCDE

To all you ‘no big deal’ guys it is a big deal – DJ was a 1st round pick and was being counted on to start day 1 and be a difference maker, if not elite and this year was supposed to be his big year – now he’s on surgery #4 and will likely miss the entire training camp if not longer – his 2014 is likely a waste.. Kasa, Wilson, Young, McGill are all important depth players who *are* needed – and we have no idea when they are coming back, if at all. In *every* instance, the Raiders have played these things off like nothing but they almost always turn out to be much more – look at last year how many people went on PUP and then IR’d later in the season when it was too late to find replacements.

The ‘big deal’, is it’s just more of the same BS that has gone on the last 2 years.

  • Dakota

    Meangelo?

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

I said that already. I got slapped.

  • ComptonRaider

    should have re-signed M.Jenkins

  • TrevJo

who thinks it’s not a big deal?

  • 0ak R8rs

    It’s DBust. Not DJ.

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

In the current scheme, that could actually work.

  • 0ak R8rs

I’ll miss Burnett. That was a good pickup last year. But he wasn’t cleared medically and he’s old when we have some good up and coming youth at that position. Maybe being able to let Burnett go means this Carlos Fields kid is as good as hoped?

  • DutchRaid

Maybe we can have try-outs open to the public, like in years past? Still got your cleats Dakota?

  • PlunkforHOF

Martian Head on NFLN just now. He’s actually a pretty funny dude. I still hate him.
