Raiders cornerback DJ Hayden had surgery for stress fracture, opens camp on PUP

Share

Cornerback DJ Hayden had surgery to repair a stress fracture following the team’s mandatory minicamp and will open training camp on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, coach Dennis Allen said Thursday.

The Raiders will open training camp with Carlos Rogers and Tarell Brown working with the first team as starting cornerbacks. Rogers will slide inside in the nickel defense, with Chimdi Chekwa and rookie TJ Carrie playing corner.

Hayden hurt his right ankle during the first organized team activity in May, at which point Allen said he was “light years ahead’’ of the pace set as an injury-wracked rookie season.

Initial tests showed no problems, Allen said. However, when Hayden failed to show progress, a second MRI detected a stress fracture and Allen said a surgical procedure was done approximately a month ago.

“I wish I had a time frame, I really don’t know what it’s going to be,’’ Allen said. “It’s disappointing for him and for me because he’s a guy we were counting on being able to step up and help us this year and he’s a young player and he needs the reps.’’

Allen said he has seen players return from such procedures in as little as four weeks but sometimes as long as eight. In any event, there is a chance Hayden could not be available for any of the 13 training camp practices in Napa.

A rookie first-round pick out of Houston, Hayden missed much of his rookie training camp and workout time after surgery to remove scar tissue related to his trauma surgery in college. He was out after eight games last season and had sports hernia surgery.

Other players who will not be able to practice for the Raiders during their first workout Friday are tight end Nick Kasa (hip flexor), and guard Lucas Nix (knee). Safety Usama Young (quad) and cornerback Keith McGill (ankle) were injured during the team’s conditioning drill Thursday and may join those players on PUP.

Players who were injured away from the team while training included defensive tackle Stacy McGee (thumb) and defensive tackle C.J. Wilson (hamstring), who will open camp on the non-football injury list.

Outside linebacker Kevin Burnett, a starter last season, is expected

Schaub had LISFRANC I believe. Only a death sentence for RBs and WRs so far. Even DBs seem to be able to recover. But I wouldn’t bet on DBust recovering from a hang nail.

  • DutchRaid

    Extend Hayden now?

  • Heck Legler

Fair enough but there’s a difference between voicing a like or dislike of a pick and claiming to know whether a player will be great or a bust. So, I have no problem with someone saying Hayden has been a bust so far or hasn’t provided any value yet, but am not willing to declare him a bust permanently. Moreover, most picks don’t become solid starters, so the regular freak-outs in here every time there’s bad news rubs me the wrong way. That said, the hope for DJ’s long term success is growing fainter and Reggie’s other picks haven’t show us much, so far.

  • Howard Benner

He committed himself to conditioning, the weight room & a change of diet to ensure he would be healthy. . .

Have to think he poured over mass game tape as well. . .not of himself, mind you. . .not much of that exists. . .

So, think more about Donald Penn, who was tipping the scales @ around 340? If he had such a revealing look @ himself in the mirror I would think Penn would have actually worked out with due diligence in the offseason (he has a reputation for not working hard in the offseason) & shed himself of 20 un needed lbs. . .

  • seymour bush

No. He had a horrific freak injury, had complications, came back, played, and is on the PUP right now probably from over training. If he somehow cannot go at all this season, then I might change my tune.

  • BigBenRexor

    Hyper-extended

  • SnBG

I know some of you have it in for Hayden and Reg so you can’t help yourselves but to jump on every little thing Reg and Hayden do. So I’m telling you here now that Hayden will be fine. He’ll be off the pup list soon and he will also play in most of the reg season games and he will show why Reg grabbed him in the 1rst Rnd. You herard it here. Lock it, book it, get used to it and shut your butts about Hayden.

And vice versa! Some People that criticized last years draft immediately are wait and see this year. I think it is appropriate to evaluate a draft immediately but it speculative for a year or two to really know. I thought last years draft was too “redshirt” and I did not really like any top 4 pics except Moore. This year I was ecstatic with all pics 1-4 except for Carr. I took crap for saying it looks like best draft in 15 years. Of course that is speculative and we need to see how it all works out but in my opinion far more people blast a draft and then turn around and say wait and see for this years draft.

  • NYCRaider

I agree with the “so far ” labeling. I think that should apply to everyone including RM. RM been bad so far . This year will reveal all.
I understand your concern about the guys who freak out, but there are also many who anoint guys like Hayden and Watson as future stars and they have yet to even prove they are NFL worthy. Its all about consistency imo

  • 0ak R8rs

Lmfao. We have to be the only team in the league that can get two guys injured DURING the conditioning tests. That would be hilarious if it wasn’t so pathetic.

Good news is everyone passed. Guys aren’t sitting around eating cupcakes all month. Shows something.

  • seymour bush

    hehehe. Good one.

  • Newsflash Hayden is “not” fine and he is an often injured player like Chaz Shilings…BUST!

  • NYCRaider

theres the point , you reference last draft which no one has taken a snap yet and completely ignore the prior two. cant heap praise on players who have yet to take the field and ignore those who havent contributed for 1-2 years.

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

Agree completely. People’s panicking over Hayden missing the start of TC is ridiculous. “CUT HIM NOW” indeed…

  • DutchRaid

Yeah, I remember the Detroit Lions having a couple “great Drafts” that turned into crap! Roy Williams and Kevin Jones?

  • 0ak R8rs

Ok. I have a pic of this. I’ll repost when he goes on IR in November.

  • seymour bush

Honestly, yes. The thing that I saw from Hayden last year is solid improvement. But I watched him in camp. He would get torched and then make adjustments and learn from his mistakes. DJ Hayden was considered the best cover corner in last years draft. No reason to think that isn’t the case right now.

  • NYCRaider

IMO RM had 2 horrible drafts and this years looks good. My only concern about this years draft is him taking Carr and passing on impact DL and #1 WRs. Otherwise I did heap praise on his draft this year, but he flopped the last 2 .

  • 0ak R8rs

Except that most of the corners from last years draft probably actually play.

  • Howard Benner

LOL. . .I’m still wondering if the trauma from his artery surgery has hindered his recovery abilities. . .

Also, we don’t have the specifics on his “rolled” ankle injury; obviously it impacted a bone in his foot. . .would like details. . .”DJ Hayden had surgery on a stress fracture of the fifth metatarsal. . .” something!

  • BigBenRexor

Agreed, maybe he just hates practice? #alleniversonsyndrome

  • marks hair

We either have the worst mri guy in medicine or DA is just full of shít..

  • rudegruden

I wouldn’t say cut him. But to be optimistic at this point is just denial.

He is injury prone (I hate to admit it)
He still needs to learn how to play at the NFL level, not the American Conference level
He’s been basically off the field for 2 years.

It’s going to be a long journey back to even being able to compete at the NFL level.

  • NYCRaider

LOL, you been so right about Hayden so far. Didnt Charles Woodson just say Hayden needs alot of practice in order to contribute? Guess you know better. Whew!! I feel great now

  • Raider O

    He is homer bro.
Everything is ok. We have the best GM and staff. You are just a negative person.

  • 1960AutumnWind

Not a very different opinion at top of draft. I do have to say he has done well with back end and UDFAs.

  • 0ak R8rs

The cut him now stuff is a joke, in case you didn’t pick up on it. We already paid for him. He may as well deliver Gatorade to the players the next 3 years.

  • seymour bush

True, but remember, he also didn’t have high draft choices. Clearly Bergstrom was a reach and probably not going to make it barring a miracle. I offset that with guys like Streator and Holmes, who seem to be turning out to be exceptional players

  • BigBenRexor

Yeah, but what does Chales Woodson know about being an NFL Cornerback, he’s a Saftey!

  • NYCRaider

agreed, now if only we had some franchise players

  • 909RaiderLifer

Or a combination of the two…

  • This is another epic failure by Reggie when we needed an immediate impact player and he took Hayden. I wouldn’t mind if this was his only mistake….

  • NYCRaider

yes, but if we applaud Gabe Jackson who is drafted later than Bergs, shouldn’t we hold RM accountable for Bergs?

  • SnBG

Talk to me in two more years about Hayden. Were some of you people born premature so it’s in your genes to jump the gun time after time. Just curious.

  • 2romes

    You’re kidding, right?

  • Raider O

Missing TC, pup list, and that after he missed the 2nd 1/2 of his rookie season. Also don’t forget his injury before the regular season last year.

  • NYCRaider

    LOL good point

  • marks hair

it’s a never ending story.. I mean we’re not fortune tellers we’ve just seen this all happen over and over bad pics bad decisions bad everything

  • 0ak R8rs

    Jackson wasn’t drafted later.

  • SnBG

If I’m not in it, then it is worthless.

  • NYCRaider

    the dialogue has changed. Surprised?

  • seymour bush

The consensus number one overall corner from last year, Dee Milliner got off to a VERY rough start. He also improved as time went on, but he certainly was no Darrelle Revis, the guy he was drafted to replace.

  • 0ak R8rs

    You are.

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

Never said we have the best GM and staff. But why be negative about everything all the freaking time?

  • NYCRaider

premature is the definition of your love for Carr. Time for you to go get some Vaseline and tissues

  • BigBenRexor

I’m trying to be positive, don’t derail me now

  • 2romes

    Lol.

  • 0ak R8rs

And? What does that mean regarding Hayden?

  • Raider O

    You act like it.
I said he had a great draft paper this year, but I’m not a homer/ cheerleader for RM and this saff.

  • marks hair

Reg can’t even pick a good doctor?
