Mack lowers the boom, receives props from Allen

Rookie linebacker Khalil Mack flattened tight end Mychal Rivera on a running play Thursday, with Rivera knocked on his backside.
“It was good to see,” coach Dennis Allen said. “I expect him to be able to do that a lot this year.”
Sure enough, on the next play Mack stuffed running back Latavius Murray on a run play up the middle. That’s the kind of bang the Raiders expect from Mack, their first-round draft pick.

– Veteran safety Charles Woodson intercepted quarterback Matt Schaub on back-to-back plays. He returned one for a touchdown.
Allen jumped to Schaub’s defense by pointing out that Schaub “responded well” after the interceptions and has played well overall in camp.
“I know how this whole thing is going to work,” Allen said. “Anytime Schaub throws an interception, everybody is going to want to try to hit the panic button and act like the sky is falling. … I’ll let (others) push the panic button. I’m not going to. He’s still doing a great job.”
Rookie Derek Carr also had a pass intercepted and returned for a touchdown Thursday. In the end, neither play is much to get worked up over.
If they happen during exhibition games, then it warrants concern.
As Allen said, Schaub had another pretty decent day. On one play, Schaub laid a pass in to wide receiver Denarius Moore on a post route. However, defensive back Chimdi Chekwa was there to break up the play.

– Brandian Ross and Jonathan Dowling also intercepted passes Thursday, and cornerback Taiwan Jones recovered a fumble. The takeaways earned high praise from Allen and defensive coordinator Jason Tarver.

– On Woodson’s first interception, he fell to the ground, rolled over, jumped to his feet and ran over to fans where he doled out a slew of high-fives. The fans roared with delight.
He gave the fans even more reason to cheer on the next play, when he returned an interception for a touchdown. He did so with the kind of flair you might expect from Woodson, ever the showman.

– Defensive tackle Antonio Smith missed practice with a groin injury that he suffered Wednesday. Allen said he doesn’t feel as if the injury is related to the sports hernia that Smith had surgery for in the offseason.
Wide receivers Juron Criner (hamstring) and Greg Little (hamstring) and linebackers Kaluka Maiava (hamstring) and Marshall McFadden (hip) also missed practice.

– WR Rod Streater (concussion) practiced at full strength for the first time since he got injured. Guard Austin Howard (back) returned to practice one day after he missed some time.

– TJ Carrie and Denarius Moore have impressed Allen on punt returns so far, Allen said. Rookie George Atkinson III has a ways to go in the return game, however.
“The guy’s explosive, he’s got some talent,” Allen said, “but he’s got to do a better job of hanging on to the ball.”

– Defensive lineman C.J. Wilson practiced for the first time Thursday after he was activated from the non-football injury list.

Raiders coach Dennis Allen said Matt Schaub is “doing a great job” and that he will “let (others) push the panic button. I’m not going to.”

I hope he is right and this is not another Knapp/ Flynn situation.

  • PlunkforHOF

Went out for a play and returned I think

  • Raider O

Hiring Knapp was an AWESOME move.

  • Raider O

    Lmao

  • rifflicks

it appears Corkran is as inept as a bunch of you…..and is not capable of recognizing a strong defensive effort and acknowledging it….. on the contrary it’s a failing of the offensive players

  • http://cosmicdanceband.com/ SilverandBlack666

How would you feel about Murray returning punts?

  • AutumnThunderstorm

    If he’s100%, yes.

He’s been in and out a few times health wise this off-season to be a lock, but he is the front runner.

  • http://cosmicdanceband.com/ SilverandBlack666

    Huge Saffold fan right here!

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

I never saw him play in college or the pro’s, so I would have to see it first.
We have seen Moore on PR’s, he doesn’t seem engaged in it.

  • http://cosmicdanceband.com/ SilverandBlack666

    too funny

  • JerryMcDonalds#1Fan

    enter Jones-Drew …

  • PlunkforHOF

And this is based on McLovin playing one play in the regular season?

blog upset prediction for the 53 man roster: Woodson & Branch are locks at safety, backed up by Dowling & Ross. Usama Young gets waived/injured #settlement

  • BigTed707

Murray is s’posed to look good in the kick return game.

  • http://cosmicdanceband.com/ SilverandBlack666

He is right about Moore he doesn’t seem committed to it and someone needs to step up and take that spot

  • JerryMcDonalds#1Fan

Pollack for OL Coach and DMAC retained as the bellcow were worse moves than Knapp. GK has a solid resume and many players excelled in his system. the good ones anyway … Palmer, Reece, Veldy, etc

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

    Ross for MUP?

  • JerryMcDonalds#1Fan

“dont call it a comeback. i’ve been here for years” name that tune

  • Raider O

We didn’t talk details, but I’m assuming that’s what he means.
He said “play” and I agreed.

  • JerryMcDonalds#1Fan

Latavius is a power back, like Bush … only faster and druggier

  • http://cosmicdanceband.com/ SilverandBlack666

He is the guy I am hoping stays healthy and takes over at RB gets those old guys outta there.

  • JerryMcDonalds#1Fan

McFadden isn’t old. You talkin bout Maurice & Kory ??

  • http://cosmicdanceband.com/ SilverandBlack666

Yeah McGloin has to get in a regular season game

I would also say he has to complete a play not just come in as a decoy

  • Raider O

I disagree. The only thing worse than hiring knapp was hiring DA.
Knapp was a QB coach in Houston cause he failed in ATL, Oak, and Seattle, and now he is a QB coach again. And I doubt he will ever get another OC position in the league.

  • JerryMcDonalds#1Fan

JFB: was that hard reading the player you hate (Mack) knock the shid out of the player you love (Rivera) ?? DROY campaign underway

  • http://cosmicdanceband.com/ SilverandBlack666

    his feet are ancient

  • Howard Benner

Not really. . .don’t want to see “ACL” or “ruptured achilles tendon” associated whti any Raiders. . .

  • Raider O

    That makes sense. Good call.
