Raiders cornerback DJ Hayden was moving laterally and doing some cutting with the athletic training staff Monday, the most he’s done physically while in the presence of the media since training camp began.
Hayden has been on the physically unable to perform list after having surgery related to a stress fracture and has yet to practice. Whether the Raiders hope to get him back for the season opener or will take it slow and have him open the season on the regular season PUP remains to be seen.
If Hayden goes on regular season PUP, he doesn’t count toward the 53-man roster and can be brought back six weeks into the season at the earliest.
As practice got underway Monday, those who weren’t participating during the media window included fullback Marcel Reece (foot), defensive tackle Justin Ellis (concussion), tackle Matt McCants (concussion), cornerback Taiwan Jones (unspecified injury), cornerback Chimdi Chekwa (knee), tight end David Ausberry (knee) and wide receiver Juron Criner (hip).
Allen indicated Sunday that Chekwa and Jones are being rehabbed with the target of being ready for the season opener, so neither is likely to play in the final two preseason games. Allen said that Jones was “banged up.”
Quarterback Derek Carr, who left the Detroit game with a concussion, was back on the practice field in a helmet and participating in warmups and drills.
