Raiders’ coach Dennis Allen says FB Marcel Reece `should be good to go’ for Packers game

When the Raiders visit the Green Bay Packers Friday night, Marcel Reece expects to put his best foot forward. And the other one, too.

Coach Dennis Allen may think better of it by game time at Lambeau Field, but saw enough out of Reece Wednesday to consider playing him in the Raiders’ third-preseason game.

“He looked good out there running around so he should be good to go for the game,’’ Allen said.

Reece, a two-time Pro Bowl player and one of the Raiders most versatile offensive weapons, is wearing a protective boot on his right foot _ similar to the ones worn at times by Darren McFadden (Lisfranc injury) and DJ Hayden (stress fracture).

The injury occurred in a 27-26 win over the Detroit Lions Friday night. McFadden did not complete practice Sunday, then sat out Monday. In the meantime, there were X-rays and an MRI.

“It’s always kind of scary when you’re not used to being hurt and you don’t really feel right,’’ Reece said. “Anything below the waist is the worst because that’s where we make our living, running.

“(It’s) still not completely right . . . the deal is right now I’ll stay in the boot until I step on the field. I won’t aggravate it any more and hopefully it will maybe make it feel a little better.’’

Allen will go no further than identifying Reece’s injury as a “foot’’ and Reece said “I haven’t told anybody. There are probably three people in this world that know what’s going on. If I’m able to be on the field, I’m going to be on the field. That’s all anyone needs to know.’’

With the improvement Reece has felt in the last two days, he doesn’t believe his foot will need to be managed throughout the course of the season.

“I don’t think it will be a thing like that,’’ Reece said. “I feel that after this week’s game maybe just get a little rest before New York (on Sept. 7) and it will be 100 percent. It’s feeling better every day.’’

Said Allen: “Obviously if it becomes a hindrance we’ll have to manage it, but if not, we’ll let him go out there and play.’’

Reece does not question the wisdom of playing in the preseason when he could be held out and heal more fully for the regular-season opener. If Reece were to sit out against the Packers and Seattle Seahawks, Jamize Olawale and Karl Wilson would assume the work at fullback.

“My job is just to go out there and play,’’ Reece said. “If coach tells me they don’t want me to play in a preseason game I’ll respect their decision. I want all my teammates to know as a leader and a captain of this team that if I’m able to play and help them win I’ll be out there if it’s a preseason game, Super Bowl, first week of the season, no matter what.’’

— Rookie quarterback Derek Carr practiced again, but Allen isn’t sure if he will play against Green Bay.

“We haven’t made that determination yet,’’ Allen said. “We’re going to be cautious with that to make sure he’s good to go before we put him back out there.’’

Last season, Allen sat Terrelle Pryor in favor of Matt Flynn for a regular-season game against Washington even though Pryor had passed all the NFL concussion tests.

If Carr doesn’t play, Matt McGloin would get time with the second unit and Allen didn’t rule out the possibility of Trent Edwards getting his first game action.

Defensive tackle Justin Ellis, offensive tackle Matt McCants and wide receiver Brice Butler have not been cleared to play and are working through the NFL concussion protcocol.

Ellis remains working with the training staff 12 days after his concussion. Boyd, who is at least on the field although limited, is the furthest along of the three.

I really hope they step up tomorrow. Forget all this $h!t about it being preseason and not showing your hand, etc… Let’s start putting the fear in the NFL now, fk this idea of sneaking up on teams.

  • Guest123

I can understand that. When I moved to Colorado in the 90’s in the middle of the Elway era, that only served to reinforce my Donkey Hate.

not far … but I don’t concern myself with rallys or protests of any sort, ever

A 3-4 with this Roster would make the most sense.

  • SaintKaufman

    Yes!! 🙂

  • Love the bear and still haunted by the creepy Schaub photo…

  • Guest123

then Schaub can work his second half magic against the Packers scrubs.

  • Then it “wont” happen

  • SaintKaufman

Imagine Clint squinting at you and saying, ‘Sandbagger’!

  • Guest123

changed it back, it started to creep me out too!

  • Theghostronin79

Nick Nolte : From the movie “Blue Chips”….
“I’ll walk right over to the other coach and hand him our play sheet…Because it’s not WHAT you do GOTDAMN IT…It’s HOW YOU DO IT ! ! !”

  • DutchRaid

Only really see Tuck as the odd man out? Maybe another ILB? Mack, Roach, Burris, Moore?

  • Guest123

coaching staff has been playing with the jigsaw puzzle too damn long not to have it figured it by now.

  • Return

And the results of this so-called help?

  • DutchRaid

Yo, will you post the draft order to the blog?

  • Would Simms play NT?

    New post.

  • Marley Bob

3-4 does make more sense, Tuck can definitely play DE in that scheme, he’s almost an ideal fit, Pat Sims NT and Antonio the other DE.
Woodley and Mack OLB, Roach and Moore/Burris inside.

  • BigBenRexor

3rd and 1, Zack Crockett. You know it’s coming, but you can’t stop it.

  • Theghostronin79

I think it needs to be both too….I mean, say they wanna call a blitz on “So n So” down and distance….if it’s a complete fail, there’s lost confidence I think…But if it works and everyone hits their assignments, then maybe it goes in the hip pocket; never to be seen again in preseason.

  • DutchRaid

Good question! He supposedly looked pretty good as a DE in a 3-4 in Cincinnati’s preseason game a couple years ago. Agile for a big man. Between McGhee, Jelly(?), Torell Troup and
    Ricky Lumpkin.

  • BigBenRexor

Smith, Simms, Tuck on the Line, rotate Jelly, McGee, Harris
Woodley, Sio, Burris, Mack at LB’s.

  • Marley Bob

And it’s been obvious since draft day….

  • Marley Bob

I don’t see the dilemma, play the system that puts your best players in the best position to make plays.

  • DutchRaid

Question: Does one of the OLB have coverage duties in a 3-4? Could having Mack and old man Woodley be a liability? I remember a few years ago people were against Wimbley and Scott as OLB…maybe not the same?

  • Return

You first get one basic offense or defense down pat.
Then each week during the season you add a new layer.
But that layer is geared toward that week’s opponent.

  • Good morning Dutch! How is life treating you today?

  • BigBenRexor

Woodley is a career OLB, Mack should be able to play, he’s the #5 pick.

  • Marley Bob

I’m not an expert on the 3-4, these days evryone has to drop from time to time, but Woodely and James Harrison managed to get doubl-digit sacks as a tandem.

  • Marley Bob

Aldon and Ahmad Brooks in SF is a more recent example

  • Marley Bob

And that’s part of the beauty in a 3-4, the OLB’s can move around, look for a mismatch, rush or drop, it’s a guessing game each play.

  • DutchRaid

Cannot complain, looking forward to Friday for so many reasons!

  • Except during the 2001 playoffs in New England to ice the game. Ouch, sorry to open that old wound for us lol.

  • Blackholepriest

Please don’t use that word around the Raider Nation because it’s a given. Not just that it’s widely known around here that word is linked to the Fruits.

  • SaintKaufman

    You’re lost again?? Dummy.

  • Back-N-Black

the question wasn’t about anyone being murdered. It was about the direction the town is headed at this point.

  • Blackholepriest

I think Carr is going to play.

  • Raider O

I believe it. It’s not just black folks bro. It’s all minorities. Look at Mexicans in AZ. Look at Arabs and Muslims in this country. I stopped flying cause it’s a hassle. One time I was checked (randomly) 5 times.

  • PlunkforHOF

RRS am I reading the draft correctly that I’m picking 7th?
