Raiders QB Matt Schaub misses practice with sore elbow

Presumptive starting quarterback Matt Schaub sat out practice Sunday with soreness in his elbow, Raiders coach Dennis Allen said.

Schaub watched Derek Carr, Matt McGloin and Trent Edwards get in all the work at practice, holding a football and interacting with the quarterbacks as well as offensive coordinator Greg Olson and defensive coordinator John DeFilippo.

“He came in yesterday afternoon with a little soreness in his elbow,’’ Allen said. “`We’ll see where he’s at tomorrow and kind of take that day by day.’’

A year ago, free agent quarterback Matt Flynn missed practice after a Week 3 preseason loss to Chicago with elbow tendonitis. Terrelle Pryor ended up starting Week 1 of the regular-season with Allen holding off on announcing his first-string quarterback until the day of the first game at Indianapolis.

Schaub’s preseason performances have been uneven, with Allen attributing the issues to the unit as a whole and rejecting the notion that his quarterback is having issues with his throwing arm.

Asked if he was concerned that Schaub’s arm has been bothering him, Allen said, “I haven’t really seen it affect him, so the answer to that question would be no.’’

Carr took reps as the first-team quarterback, is expected to face Seattle and presumably would start the opener if Schaub’s elbow problems become a long-term issue.

Thought you were in at 6-10? Change it on the big board?

If Shcaub is a dud seasons done anyway. May as well see what he’s got. I have faith in him, and I like how he carries himself.

  • tuckrulefool

Too bad Irishman wasn’t drafted. Then some on here could get behind giving him a real chance. For most people in here UDFA = “He must suck”.

CB Ras I Dowling was released. I wanted us to draft him in 2011.

I have to see how our QB looks first…

DJ you always have a respectful demeanor to your comments and I respect that but it is getting to look like more and more DA is just not a HC
Few can become great enough to lead men. Sure he has had a tough situation with shuffling QB ‘s coaches and players but in the end it’s all on him to succeed or fail,so far he has fallen very short

I think McGloin can win some games. As I don’t think Carr is ready. He certainly isn’t better than McGloin right now. It was a farce that that moved Carr to #2 after like 3 non padded practices anyway. I want Carr to succeed. I have no agenda. But McGloin started 6 games last year. He knows the playbook. He knows the protections. He knows the audibles. There’s no way Carr is better right now. I’m not ready to throw away the season just cause Schaub might suck.

You mean ‘who our QB is;?

  • DJ Johnny

Yes…definitely…just not getting the firestorm of criticism on this latest elbow soreness thing. All coaches lie…every week..every day maybe if that’s what he’s doing here.

If he came out and said “Yeah…it was dumb to anoint Schaub, but obviously he’s not a guy who is gonna get it done for us”, then I think he’d still be getting hammered.

  • DJ Johnny

Ok if that’s what it is then it’s a fair stance. If guys just think regardless of his decisions he’s not handling them like a good HC should…then I can appreciate that. Like I said it just seems no matter what decision he makes he’s getting it from all sides.

  • eastoaklandraider

What if Winston is there? I take him and create a real schit storm.

  • eastoaklandraider

He should have a decent run game and a decent defense to help him. Get the rookie year out the way.

  • eastoaklandraider

You are right on all accounts here, but sometimes you have to throw logic out the window. This seems to be one of those times, see what he’s got, the moment doesn’t seem to to big for him

  • aig-raiders

I dont mind carr start8ng thursday so all your points above will be validated and we can put the carr hype to rest. Kid is physically talented but def not ready yet. If he holding on ball too long in camp what makes him all the sudden faster in a game?

  • Tyler Angelica Miller

    Any relation to Johnathan Dowling?

  • wildsach

WTH did we waste the $$$ on Shob ? If he was worth the chance, Bill OBrien wudda kept him. OBrien coach Tom Brady & def knows about talent.
