Presumptive starting quarterback Matt Schaub sat out practice Sunday with soreness in his elbow, Raiders coach Dennis Allen said.
Schaub watched Derek Carr, Matt McGloin and Trent Edwards get in all the work at practice, holding a football and interacting with the quarterbacks as well as offensive coordinator Greg Olson and defensive coordinator John DeFilippo.
“He came in yesterday afternoon with a little soreness in his elbow,’’ Allen said. “`We’ll see where he’s at tomorrow and kind of take that day by day.’’
A year ago, free agent quarterback Matt Flynn missed practice after a Week 3 preseason loss to Chicago with elbow tendonitis. Terrelle Pryor ended up starting Week 1 of the regular-season with Allen holding off on announcing his first-string quarterback until the day of the first game at Indianapolis.
Schaub’s preseason performances have been uneven, with Allen attributing the issues to the unit as a whole and rejecting the notion that his quarterback is having issues with his throwing arm.
Asked if he was concerned that Schaub’s arm has been bothering him, Allen said, “I haven’t really seen it affect him, so the answer to that question would be no.’’
Carr took reps as the first-team quarterback, is expected to face Seattle and presumably would start the opener if Schaub’s elbow problems become a long-term issue.
