Davis reaches out to long-time Raiders nemesis about coaching vacancy

Long-time coach Mike Shanahan interviewed with the Raiders and 49ers, according to a report Monday.
Shanahan, 62, got his first head coaching job in the NFL in 1988, when then-Raiders owner Al Davis hired him away from the Denver Broncos to succeed Tom Flores.
Davis fired Shanahan four games into the 1989 season after the Raiders went 8-20 under Shanahan. It wasn’t until 1995 that Shanahan received another opportunity to be a head coach.
Shanahan made the most of his second chance, as he guided the Broncos to back-to-back Super Bowl titles in 1997 and ’98. Most recently, he coached Washington for four seasons.
Washington went 24-40 under Shanahan, who departed after the 2013 season. Shanahan did not coach last season. An NBC station in Washington D.C. first reported that Shanahan had interviewed with the Raiders and 49ers.
Shanahan also spent three years with the 49ers as their offensive coordinator from 1992-94. He parlayed his success there into the head coaching gig with the Broncos.
The Raiders already have interviewed Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur and Broncos defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio.
Several other candidates are slated to be interviewed in the coming days. One who won’t be considered is Mike Holmgren, who coached the Packers and Seahawks.
Holmgren on Monday told Sports Radio KJR that he is through coaching in the NFL. He said he was offered NFL jobs last week but that he was interested only in coaching the 49ers, who told him that they are not interested.

I’m still waiting for DeSean Jackson to land at Oakland Int. Airport to sign with the Raiders.d
After all, a bunch of journalists and bloggers reported it was “going to happen” and I have faith in their word.

I agree totally I do think financially the Raiders org. Are in much better shape than when Al Davis was in charge, the only thing that bitters me is the Tommy Boy look its hard to take him seriously but agree that the org is in much better shape

  • funnyfalcon

This is absolutely terrible, but strangely appropriate.

  • KT

Did he open the meeting by handing him his paycheck from 1989 with interest?

  • MuthaFknZeus

That would be horrible. Great players don’t always make good coaches.

  • Al

Completely disagree that Marck Davis doesn’t have a clue on football operations he was raised in a football world he’s Dad talked Football 24/7 how can he not learn for All those years?
I do think he has knowledge of the game maybe not as much as Big Al but I think enough

Papa on The Game now, just said he had heard about this for a while, that last week, Shanahan came to Pleasanton. In on it was Madden, Delaney, Mark while Reggie was in San Antonio watching his kid play.

Papa said, “I am still trying to wrap my head around this. I thought what Mark did with having Marcus Allen lighting the flame and now what he’s doing with Shanahan is the height of disrespect for Al and I just can’t understand what he’s doing. We know how Al felt and this is just beyond me. I heard about the Shanahan thing before the season even ended.”
