Davis reaches out to long-time Raiders nemesis about coaching vacancy

Share

Long-time coach Mike Shanahan interviewed with the Raiders and 49ers, according to a report Monday.
Shanahan, 62, got his first head coaching job in the NFL in 1988, when then-Raiders owner Al Davis hired him away from the Denver Broncos to succeed Tom Flores.
Davis fired Shanahan four games into the 1989 season after the Raiders went 8-20 under Shanahan. It wasn’t until 1995 that Shanahan received another opportunity to be a head coach.
Shanahan made the most of his second chance, as he guided the Broncos to back-to-back Super Bowl titles in 1997 and ’98. Most recently, he coached Washington for four seasons.
Washington went 24-40 under Shanahan, who departed after the 2013 season. Shanahan did not coach last season. An NBC station in Washington D.C. first reported that Shanahan had interviewed with the Raiders and 49ers.
Shanahan also spent three years with the 49ers as their offensive coordinator from 1992-94. He parlayed his success there into the head coaching gig with the Broncos.
The Raiders already have interviewed Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur and Broncos defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio.
Several other candidates are slated to be interviewed in the coming days. One who won’t be considered is Mike Holmgren, who coached the Packers and Seahawks.
Holmgren on Monday told Sports Radio KJR that he is through coaching in the NFL. He said he was offered NFL jobs last week but that he was interested only in coaching the 49ers, who told him that they are not interested.

Thanks. I was sure it was to mitigate the Shanahan stuff.

  • PARaider

How in depth could they possibly be? Especially with Mark. No way I would be able to keep a straight face interviewing with the Hair…

  • Goldie7

    Looks like it.

  • Dan78

Your right only thing that sticks to me is that Mark is very good friends with the mayor of Inglewood…. He might be keeping his ear close to the situation and might somehow leach on to the LA stadium before the Chargers do….. Kroenke is gone from St. Louis…..

  • 504 Raider

Probably can announce that they agreed in principle to a deal for Del Rio to become the next Raiders coach after his season is over.

  • Dan78

    Yes….

  • I have often stated I think we should move to LA. SA is probably the worst choice we could make (so we probably will. lol). wonder if there will still be room for us in LA. Don’t think Mark would be willing to share someone else’s stadium. wasn’t that his stated problem with Levi?

  • RTF916

“Just so you know, we’re not interviewing you to satisfy the Rooney Rule. We think you’re perfectly capable of coaching this team. I’ve also always wanted to tell you I’m a big fan of Friday and Are We There Yet, and of course your music.”

  • Paper Tiger

Hey! What happened to hawaiianraider? Is that guy still around?

  • Raideraholic

    Interview agenda:
    1- hookers
    2- 4-3 or 3-4?

  • Goldie7

You know what plunk? That’s a good point.

  • Zymurge

True, it’s not in great shape relative to the other teams. It’s also not a public corporation so there’s not a lot of info on the finances. From reports I’ve read it was in TERRIBLE shape when Mark inherited it and he’s since been increasing the profitability, pointing the ship on the right path. All indications are that it is getting net better.

To be clear, I’m not talking about W/Ls or other percieved measurements of success. I’m talking about making money. Mark has cut costs and increased revenue. He’s ensured that the near future years are under control as well in terms of long term commitments to outrageous contracts. He put in place a long term plan (like it or not) to increase the marketability of the org. He’s actively negotiating for a location that will allow him to increase revenues on ticket sales.

As a business, what more would you reasonably expect him to do?

  • SlvrnBlck478

    Shurmur or Bowles!!

  • Reggie interviewed the Rooney qualifier.

  • FourMoreYears

Mark Davis: “Reggie is totally my guy, unless he’s not. I have complete trust in him, until he does some dumb sh*t and I have to pull rank. I would have fired him for Harbaugh, but I don’t want to give any of his power to a football executive, which I totally want to hire, even though I haven’t done so in over three years. I am now boarding Southwest airlines with a faaaaabulous bag, to go possibly offer a job to a man who once ordered his quarterback to throw a football at my father’s head.”

Raider fan: “Well, at least we’re not dysfunctional anymore!”

  • RTF916

    Bowles or Shanahan!

  • irjonny

watch us hire pep hamilton after all this

  • AlDavisJr

    eff u ck rat face

  • Zymurge

A lot of that was Al’s way of selling you on working for him, by presenting an owner that arguably knew more about football than any of his peers. It was his way of making such an impression on coaches — typically younger less experienced ones — that they’d be willing to sacrifice some of the autonomy other owners would give you in exchange for the opportunity to be mentored by Al.

Said it a few minutes ago.

  • irjonny

    i think so

  • RTF916

    yayay

  • Goldie7

I’m not sure man. But I bet he would appreciate your shout out.

  • Guest123

enjoy them. that age they are precious

  • RTF916

    Shanahan + Carr = Super Bowl 2016.

  • Goldie7

    Think so?

  • FourMoreYears
  • SlvrnBlck478

I expect either Sparano, Bowles, or Shurmur to be announced in the next couple of days.

  • I doubt it. Al was picking brains and seeing if he could learn something or if you were smart enough to be Raider coaching material

  • JLofty

This is heresy. And to me it has nothing to do with Al Davis who also had issues with other people that I did not.
Shanarat is the enemy. Plain and simple. Non-negotiable. Mark Davis continues to prove he is an unmitigated idiot….

  • Guest123
  • Morilla_00

Next we are going to interview Marty Schottenheimer

  • RTF916

    Mark Davis drank Jobu’s rum.

  • M.Shorter

I think we get Del Rio as well. What will be interesting is if Mark allows the new HC to pick his own staff. Don’t wanna make the same mistake that DA made.

  • Guest123

    and after that Lane Kiffen

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

Yeah. Been scarce over the holidays, but he’s still here. Mainly an early AM guy.

  • Goldie7

    You drank Jobu’s rum. lol

  • AlDavisJr

    LOL!

  • RTF916

That would explain a lot in my life, that’s for certain.

  • JLofty

Just as an aside. I thought Todd Bowles was younger. I remember him as a player if vaguely. Thought he was in his 40s…..

  • i’m not talking about wins losses either. i’m talking about the business. he’s a joke. but unfortunately I need to run if I remember i’ll get more in depth later. cheers Z.

  • PARaider

“There’s a gleam men, a gleam”…..”Only one thing left to say……Chargers heart” worse dialogue than from a Miami Vice rerun

  • SlvrnBlck478

HC should be able to pick their own staff. Good luck getting a respectable HC, if Mark and RM plan on picking his coordinators.

  • RTF916

Shottenheimer coined the “Raider Rule”, and he will end it.

  • Guest123

If Mark hires that ratface cócksucker, that’s it, I’m done with this team. I’ll tap out

  • MuthaFknZeus

Just checked my phone this morning.

    Shanahan.

    Dafaq? Has hell froze over?
