Olson interviewing with Jaguars for coordinator vacancy

Share

Greg Olson remains under contract with the Raiders through the 2015 season. However, he has been granted permission to interview with the Jacksonville Jaguars for their offensive coordinator vacancy, according to a report Wednesday.
Olson has spent the past two seasons as the Raiders offensive coordinator. He is one of three Raiders coaches whose contracts have yet to expire. Interim coach Tony Sparano and special teams coordinator Bobby April are the two others.
NFL Network reported that Olson is headed to Jacksonville today for an interview with the Jaguars. The news comes at a time when the Raiders are closing in on a deal to hire Jack Del Rio as their next head coach.
Olson was credited with getting rookie quarterback Derek Carr up to speed in a hurry this season when it became apparent that Carr was a better option as the starter than veteran Matt Schaub.
Olson also did an admirable job getting inexperienced quarterback Terrelle Pryor game ready in 2013 after projected starter Matt Flynn struggled in training camp. Pryor began the season as the starter and started nine games.
Overall, the Raiders offense struggled in the run game and scoring points under Olson, just as the offense had under predecessor Greg Knapp.

Do you have a point or just venting? Not sure how this is relevant whatsoever to my post.

    Reggie:We’re building an ihop.

Tomsula named Whiners HC. Expect Gase to be the HC with the Broncos.

Vic Fangio said he would leave if him or Shannahan weren’t hired as the HC. Fangio might be worth a look for DC as well if Mike Smith doesn’t work out.

Yeah im late but. Breaking News looks nice NFL COM

You mean Reggie STILL won’t field a winning roster in 2015? What are we up to now, a six year plan?

  • 24

Oh I see…thanks for the clear up.

  • SnBG

Right and when they grab someone you don’t like or don’t go after the guy you like you will turn on Jackie Baby in a NY minute.

  • 1960AutumnWind

According to sources he asked for advise after TE medical report on Saffold. Is that bad? Man I don’t like Reggie but sometimes we just pile on.

  • 24

Well I’m happy with the current moves so I’m not mad about it.

  • 1960AutumnWind

When has he said that? Alex, Delusions for 200…

  • NYCRaider

virtually every year JDR has out performed any team Reggie has put together. For Reggie to have issues with someone who has had more success than him is comical . Thats my point

  • DutchRaid

B/c Reggie has made some awesome FA signings! Can anyone complain about any of them?
    Tarrell Brown and Tuck….

    No problem brotha…

Also not relevant. JDR did not coach a team going through a complete roster teardown and rebuild that was necessarily talent starved. He also did not coach this same roster over the last few seasons so there’s no apples to apples comparison of how he would do with the same. For all we know he could have done worse than DA. I don’t think he would’ve, but who knows.

But that again has nothing to do with the pattern, or lack thereof, that I see in how he manages growth of his team over the courses of several seasons. It’s a key trait in building a winner as opposed to trying to ride the lightning on one year where it all might fall together.

If you want to look at trends under Reggie there’s good and bad.

Defense in yards allowed trended from 29 pre-RM to 18-22-21 over the next three years, a clear upwards trend.

Offense meanwhile trended from 9-18-23-32 in yards produced which is pretty clearly the root of the problem. Same can be said for points produced that trended 16-26-24-31. When you are falling in yards and points produced you are looking at lot 3 and outs and more time on the field for the defense.

    Lol W0rd

One more thing, is that it wasn’t necessarily that RM didn’t want JDR — it’s that he thought Sparano was a better fit. There’s a big difference between saying “I like Jack but think we’d be better under Tony” than saying “Jack has issues and I don’t want him.”

It’s kind of like trying to say you must be geh for not wanting to go after that hot blond, when the reality is you like brunettes better and were chasing one that you thought was hotter.

It’s easy to manufacture faults if you are only looking at part of the context. I’m saying that there is something in JDRs past that probably concerned Reggie and made him lean towards Sparano. Nothing wrong with that approach, it’s called decision making based on the facts at hand sprinkled with a healthy dose of subjective reasoning around where you don’t have facts.

Reggie’s job is many faceted. Selecting a coach is just part of it. It may be true that Mark has more faith in Madden’s assessment in this area, but again, it’s only a portion of the job. It appears that Mark is totally onboard with Reggies primary responsibilites around cap management and personnel decisions. To say that only because he thinks Reggie is too green to select a HC is a large leap towards he needs to be fired when in Mark’s eyes he’s doning well in the other 90% of job.

  • NYCRaider

worst sack total in Raider history, our starting CBs had 2 ints the entire season. Defense allowed most points in NFL. Our defense hasnt improved under Reggie. For you to think that JDR possibly would have done a worse job then DA makes this debate meanlingless. You obviously dont like JDR , but thats ok , your entitled to your opinion

  • KT

    Any Questions?

  • KT

He has 1 year as DC for the Berlin Thunder….Didn’t someone already go over the lack of success specialty coaches have becoming a head coach with no experience?
