Raiders S Charles Woodson talks of his team’s free agent class and the `crazy’ vibe going on in the building

Share

Raiders safety Charles Woodson talked with a few reporters Saturday night in a brief interview before a dinner honoring him as the winner of the club’s Commitment to Excellence award. Woodson talked about the new free agent class, missing out on Ndamukong Suh and his optimism regarding the Raiders future. A transcription:

Q: Free agents said you have been on the recruiting trail, helping bring some guys in?

Woodson: I met a few of the guys over at the Raiders facility. I think when I got to them most of them were just about signed. Just welcomed them to the Raiders, but I think we got some quality guys that are coming to help us. Just want to congratulate them coming over to the Raiders. Looking forward to the future.

Q: Such a dramatic overhaul to the coaching staff, the guy you lobbied for came back, a couple of quality control guys, other than that all different. Haven’t played for any of them yet, but what kind of vibe are you getting? The free agents seem pretty fired up . . .

Woodson: From what I’ve seen so far, the vibe is crazy right now. A lot of positive energy coming from everybody in there. The great part about it is you have a lot of ex-players, so I think that energy is kind of innately there, because you have a lot of fiery guys, a lot of guys that have played in the NFL at a high level so they have that natural energy. So it’s been. It’s been great to talk to ’em and kind of see their vision. I think it’s going to be a great year for us.

Q: You think you could be good, like, right now?

Woodson: For me, man, I don’t see it any other way. I don’t look at it any other way. It doesn’t matter where I’ve been or what it looks like. Any season I’ve gone to I’m looking at winning the Super Bowl. I feel good about the direction. I do feel good about where things have gone so far in free agency and also with the coaches. I think the season is going to be a lot of fun.

Q: Last year you played kind of a waiting game, weren’t sure if they wanted you back, this year they moved quick. You were back right away, was that something that was told to you before end of the season?

Woodson: It wasn’t told to me before then, but that was something that was stressed. I didn’t want to wait around. If we were going to do it, get it done now, and then I would know. So we got it done quickly and I’m happy about that. I think it says a lot about how I went out there this year and played the game, for them to want me back, to get it done quickly. So I’m proud of that.

Q: Excited about Ken and Jack about defense and scheme are you excited? Nate Allen talked about playing fast . . keep it simple, play fast . . .is that how you expect it to go?

Woodson: I think so. I think that’s going to be the key to bringing in a lot of different faces is keeping things faces and seeing things and not worrying about too much. You can go out there and play football because the game is not going to be moving too fast for you. Not trying to worry about what the other team is going to do, just worrying about what you’re going out there to do because you’ve practiced whatever it is over and over and over again. If you can go out there and do that, you’ll be fine.

Q: Fan base looks from the outside and says, we didn’t get Suh, we didn’t get Murray, and it seems like there’s decent part and spent a lot of money, but not the big splash names. Fromw hat you see, are you OK with what you’re bringing in?

Woodson: Yeah, I mean. There’s no question that Suh would have been huge. He would have been huge. He would have been a great addition to the team. But at the same time, if you don’t get a Suh, you can get three or four other players to make up for it. And what that does is build depth. So you bring in guys that are possibly starters, that will compete for a starting job, and then we’ve still got money to get three or four other guys. Then you’ve got the draft coming up. So you have the potential to build the team the way you want to. Just because you didn’t get the one guy, we’ll have the opportunity to build this team the right way and that’s what Reggie’s looking at.

Raiders have $30M or so in cap space, but over $7M will go to rookies.

  • Al_is_theraiders

just a couple of weeks ago he still thought….

General manager Reggie McKenzie was initially hesitant to release Schaub, though, because he felt the QB still had trade value, according to the Contra Costa Times.

  • Gdog

Especially when the writer completely nails it.

Let me guess, you only believe what is published at Raiders.com?

  • the real genius dr robert

    liars lie.

  • RAY NJ

    What’s he gonna say ” I just gave a stop gap safety $23M ” ?

  • DJ Johnny

Is it not factually accurate? That’s alot of money not spent. I’m not doing cart wheels over the guys he DID get. I’m surprised they cost that much…but it is what it is. If he exhausts all that cap money I think it will be a good thing.

I do like that it was spent on youth.

  • _Mista_

About the same as all your draft predictions.
    -Not good

  • FourMoreYears

Haha, at least it’s better than back in the mid 2000s. You would never see some of the sh*t on Raiders.com, it was like 1984 over there.

u were a moron two weeks ago and u still are.

    weird.

  • xraided

    whos matt ponder?

  • Al_is_theraiders

    3 years? 3 fails….

McKenzie got rid of Flynn before the season ended. McKenzie drafted Tyler Wilson in the fourth round and cut him — Wilson was the highest pick cut from the 2013 draft.

  • BigBenRexor

Unfortunately, we have the only GM who would trade for an ineffective player on the cusp of being released.

  • JLofty

yea, they don’t know what the cap is for next year but we HAVE to average 95% spending THIS and NEXT year to get to 89%. So if less than 95% this year then MORE than 95% next year.
It’ll never happen. We needed Suh AND all the guys we signed this year…..

  • marks hair

At last this year our players are still young enough to improve.
I had no hope for big years for the tuck/Woodley types.

    No on Jennings btw

  • JLofty

Cash spending is the only thing that counts in the 89% number btw….

  • Gdog

Almost as much as our dead cap spending.

  • I appreciate the fact Weg will get rid of a mistake/miss in FA/draft, would you rather he give them a scholarship, and stubbornly keep them on the roster?

  • Ron69

Gurley will be first ronder, Orchard 2nd and JJ might be available in the 6th, didnt like your mock.

Still aint going to hit the 89% threshold at this rate…

  • Al_is_theraiders

    explain watson? explain bergstrom?

  • RaYdAFoELyPh

    Bergstrom

  • JLofty

    McCown 2.0?

  • RaYdAFoELyPh

    Watson and bergstrom scholarship players

Mark just texted from somewhere that He wants the Schaub money delvered in single dollar bills. He also wanted to remind everyone we have to much respect for our women in the community to entertain Hardy.

Meanwhile in other news……Chip “Mad Dog” Kelly bringing in Tim Tebow for workout. Chip’s lost it. He’s gone Col.Kurtz in a matter of days…

  • the real genius dr robert

    ur such a football-ignorant jackazz.

bergstrom is likely gone this year and watson is just heading into his 3rd year and has flashed.

u must be dreadful to be around in person.

  • Gdog

I am guessing they have two “plans.”

    1. They hope they can sign a “whale” next year if the team improves and looks playoff ready (or better yet, makes the playoffs.) PLAYOFFS?

    2. The Bleacher report article is accurate and they think they can wait until the 2016 season is over and sign Carr and Mack to extensions. .. a loophole.

  • the real genius dr robert

    trying to inspire/pizz off sanchez?

  • RAY NJ

Had to change his name per new contract.

  • DJ Johnny

We’re gonna have the reverse psychology thing working for us this yr.
Last yr I was one of the few on here who was stoked about Tuck, Smith,
Brown and Jones. I thought it was a really good FA haul. This yr…not
so much…EXCEPT these are guys coming off rookie contracts..and young. We saw how last yr turned out with those FA’s on the field…so-so, maybe this years will surprise in a GOOD way?

  • SlvrnBlck478

Nate Orchard will be gone before the third

  • RAY NJ

    Yes.

  • Javon, nothing else compares baby.

  • Pryor will get a call shortly,

doubtful about loopholes. I mean this cba and the floor is new and thus untested. But I ma having a hard time seeing the dates line up.
*PS: I am okay with the loophole if it works. And Carr has by then in fact proven to be worth it..

  • BigBenRexor

Basically, everything we needed going into FA.

  • r8dercain

More like 23 mil 7 mil of that will go to rookie cotracts

  • RaiderCDE

Mark’s Guy is knocking it out of the park!

  • BigBenRexor

    Dennis Allen?

  • r8dercain

    That’s a whole team…lol Reggie got this

  • Gdog

I am guessing its lawyer stuff. Maybe the dating wasn’t well thought out when the CBA was drawn up?

  • DutchRaid

He got signed by the Chiefs…

  • Gdog

    LOL! Pow

  • BigBenRexor

I thought you were pretty supportive of this FA, what happened, did Ponder send you over the Edge?

  • r8dercain

According to papa. Ponder is a good signing

  • DKnight007

Big Cat gonna be gone and so is Fowler. Carr needs weapons …badly

  • BigBenRexor

I’m just happy Matt IV is no more, So I’ll leave Ponder alone. Although, you know we only signed him because he’s Christian
