When the this is all over, Los Angeles will likely gain two football teams, and the NFL will lose its biggest hammer to get cities to pay up for new stadiums.
So where will teams turn to extract taxpayer concessions. Maybe San Diego, maybe London. But if the Raiders are left out of Los Angeles, one report has them turning to San Antonio – or at least threatening Oakland that they may do so.
One report even states an unnamed source that the Raiders have a land deal in place for a site between San Antonio and Austin. I’ll try to ask him about that today.
One thing San Antonio — and Texas as a state — has in its favor is a fund that helps build sports facilities. But it lacks Raiders fans and it’s hard to think that Mark Davis wants to put his team in Cowboy Country, even if Jerry Jones doesn’t stand in his way.
And Davis just last month told a reporter that he’s only considering Oakland or Los Angeles. We’ll see if he changes his tune if LA is off the table.
