The Raiders grabbed a productive and athletic pass rusher in the third round Friday, selecting linebacker/defensive end Shilique Calhoun from Michigan State.

Calhoun was a three-time second-team All-American selection and had 26.5 sacks over the final three years with the Spartans, including 10.5 as a senior.

The 6-foot-5, 240-pound Calhoun was a two-time captain for Michigan State and a former high school basketball star that has good burst and possesses multiple pass rush moves. Calhoun will have to improve his discipline after picking up nine encroachment penalties this past season.

Calhoun’s selection bolsters a pass rush that already includes Khalil Mack and free agent signee Bruce Irvin, plus the potential midseason addition of Aldon Smith from suspension.

  • J’s lineup has 4 of our 7 starters up front with a combined 12 NFL starts

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

    AROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

  • Oak R8rs33.01

Better to start a 2nd and 3rd round rookie than two UDFAs and a couple of washed up vets. It’s an improved front 7. DL rotation looks great right now. A little coaching and some experience and its Seattle DL all over again. Just gotta work on MLB.

  • 500 might be a reach, lol but he did play well

  • Gdog

I think he is an old guy like us and has no clue of the 60’s- 70’s.

Yea, Al took thirty years to find someone like CARR!

After watching the post draft press conf with JDR, he said Calhoun is a SAM/DE. Aren’t both Mack and Irvin also SAM/DE’s? I’m starting to wonder if they might put Irvin at MLB in certain instances…thoughts?

  • Oak R8rs33.01

No. Not even close. Not even at 70 I don’t believe. He thinks he’s funny.

  • Oak R8rs33.01

Kessler sucks. More than most USC QBs. As unbelievable as that might seem.

  • Raider O

    You want a stud ILB?
    Josh Perry
6’3+, 250, sub 4.7 speed, and has a nose for the ball.
Look at his production vs 1st round teammate D Lee

  • Raider O

Doubt it. Moving Mack to DE full time seems more likely

  • EDWARD TEACH

There are going to be some interesting defensive formations this year.

  • Kylo-Kenchun24

Yup…Scooby 3 and any RB leftover (which there are PLENTY of) and an OT, WR tomorrow methinks.

I love the pass rush potential/freshness roto of these guys…no more triple teams on Mack.

  • kuhlest

great, you don’t know me, my background or my day job, but whatevers, laters

  • EDWARD TEACH

I don’t think either one is going to start unless one of the vets falters, and I’m including Mario and his neck. Ward will see some time at 3 tech and at 5 tech and Calhoun will play in nickle and spell Mack. Calhoun should have an impact on special teams also.

  • inonewordraider

Project crazy agile for his size, he def got the right staff to coach him up

  • inonewordraider

We played more 3-4 last yr, we play multiples tho

  • Jmello

Im a big fan. Just noticed some trends. 😉

  • inonewordraider

When do we get our rb?

  • Raider O

    5th

  • BABY AL

Who can we compare calhoun to?

  • BABY AL

    Lol

  • yolobathsalts

Well one plays up and down the line, plays some DT, plays some DE…one can move back and forth between DE/LEO/Rush OLB – whatever you want to call it. Ward is about 300 pounds to Calhoun’s 250. Will attack in completely different ways in different situations – just like the rest of the ones to whom you consider them redundant.

    BRING BACK THE CHEMIST, TARVER!

  • Miamiraider78

Can we destroy Allen’s defense in week 1? Thanks!

  • DanfromVegas

    Exactly
