Ken Norton Jr.: New Raiders safety Karl Joseph ‘a pack of dynamite’

Ken Norton Jr. has been able to get his hands on a couple of his new toys, but one is still wrapped up in its packaging.

First-round pick Karl Joseph, a safety from West Virginia, isn’t expected to be ready until training camp after tearing his ACL during his senior season.

So while Norton, the Raiders’ defensive coordinator, has gotten a look at new cornerback Sean Smith and outside linebacker Bruce Irvin, Joseph has remained in the weight room and on the sidelines. (Free agent safety Reggie Nelson also has not practice, presumably due to an injury).

But Norton has seen enough in watching Joseph’s film to get excited about him making an immediate impact.

“The guy is explosive,” Norton said. “He’s around the football a lot. He’s a pack of dynamite.”

Competition during training camp will bear this out, but teams don’t often draft a first rounder at a position of need without plans to start him. And considering that in Joseph and Nelson’s absence, the starting safeties at practice have been Nate Allen and Dewey McDonald, it’s all the more obvious how much they’ll be relying on Joseph.

“Anytime you have a first-round draft pick, you expect an impact player,” Norton said. “We expect him to be that.”

Even Raiders stud pass rusher Khalil Mack said he’s looking forward to seeing Joseph get on the field.

“He’s not on the field with us yet, but we’re just excited to see what he’s going to be able to do for us as well,” Mack said.

I can’t believe how bad he was. Shocking really. He went to the Ravens after and played pretty good.

  • Oak R8rs33.01

And is primary backup in a shaky QB room now. Don’t recall where.

  • Charlie

One year guarantee was well worth it.
As I said if somebody wants to critique the move, suggest a viable alternative.
    You NEVER get one.

  • 24

    Falcons.

  • Charlie

    Alternatives?
    Sanchez the whiny complainer?
    Vince Young?

  • 24

I supported the Schaub move…that’s why I was surprised he played so poorly.

  • Oak R8rs33.01

Yea. Reggie restructuring that contract took a lot of sting out of the move. Became essentially a one year, $8 million dollar rental.

  • RaidingTexas

Right back where he started. Lol

  • 24

    Haha yup

  • Oak R8rs33.01

Thought it was shakier than that. Ryan usually stays healthy.

  • RaidingTexas

Did you see the trolling between Trump, Hillary and Reibus yesterday? I posted it last night. Funny stuff.

  • Charlie

    Same with Flynn.
Palmer was getting 12 mill and wound up getting 15 mill with the cards.
    Flynn got 6 mill.

Rebuilding around a 34 year old statue in player made know sense.
    .

  • RaidingTexas

    Here it is again:

  • 24

    Hah that’s funny.

  • RaidingTexas

Man you love to talk about the Yankees.

  • Charlie

That is why trump has gained so much popularity.
He can misspeak and be very rough around the edges but people believe that he is speaking form the heart.
same with bernie. He was passionate in what he believed in.

There is an awful lot of concern that Hillary is smiling and waving while stabbing you in the back.

    huge concern.

  • Oak R8rs33.01

Phillip Rivers on Boomer and Carton, a NY sports show. Wtf?

  • 24

No doubt. I fully believe she rigged that election against Bernie. Bernie should have won.

  • RaidingTexas

Remember when Team USA had that goalie making an insane number of saves – the only reason they went deep into the Olympics that year?

  • RaidingTexas

It’s a nationally broadcast show like Mike & Mike.

  • R8der4evr

    Yup hot goalie
    Go Sharks

  • Charlie

I think the trump speech writers and debate prep people are licking their chops at what they can say about Hillary and her dirt bag husband.

    Tough election sledding ahead.

  • Oak R8rs33.01

I know. I watch it every morning. But still, why this douche?

  • 24

I want to say yes but my memory says…uuuuhhhhh

  • RaidingTexas

Oh I see, you’re asking “why” from their perspective, not his. Lol

  • 24

    Because Douche’s are popular…

  • 24

I just hope she actually faces punishment (which I doubt) so that Bernie can step into her spot but that might be wishful thinking now.

  • RaidingTexas

It was in the 90s I think. Been a good while. He kind of came out of nowhere.

  • Charlie

Jim Craig helped win in 1980.
That is the only great US mens ice hockey standout performance I can remember.

  • Charlie

I think that is why Bernie hung in for as long as he did.
I absolutely believe Hillary’s support in the party goes back to when she was convinced not to divorce Bill during his presidency.
for that she has been coddled and brought along to this point.
    Sickening.

  • RaidingTexas

No, it was well after that. I was too young to really remember that one. It wasn’t a standout performance for the entire team, just that goalie. I want to say they were eliminated in quarterfinals, which was better than anyone had expected. The team rode the back of that guy. Can’t remember the name anymore, though.

  • 24

It’s driving me crazy because I feel like I knew this once but it’s hazy.

  • DM 8526

Ray Leblanc? He was the goalie for the 92 Olympic squad I believe. He played really well during those Olympics.

  • RaidingTexas

The establishment would not put him in her spot. He never even ran as a Democrat until recently. The party doesn’t like that he criticized them for not running someone against Obama in the 2012 primaries. They would turn to someone like Biden if that happened.

Anyway, that is not going to happen. If they haven’t found a reason to indict her in nearly three years, they’re not going to find one. The FBI isn’t that incompetent.

The Republicans are just dragging this out through the election to keep it on everyone’s minds. That’s been their plan all along. It will quietly go away after November.

  • 24

His name isn’t ringing a bell for me but he did this…

At the 1992 Winter Olympics, LeBlanc appeared in all eight games for the United States, compiling a record of 5–2–1 with two shutouts. The Americans finished out of the medals, however, as they lost 6–1 to Czechoslovakia in the bronze medal game.

  • Charlie

    !992
    Ben Bishop
    Cory Schneider
    jonathan Qucik

    Came in fourth place.

  • DM 8526

I used to know a guy named Roy LeBlanc, I’d accidently call him Ray all the time, that’s the only reason I remember that ha.

  • RaidingTexas

    Lol

  • Dakota

    Tom Barrasso
    Mike Dunham
    Mike Richter

  • RaidingTexas

I think that was him even though they got shellacked by Czech in that Bronze medal game. I’m pretty sure they were not expected to go that far.

  • 24

    I think it’s Quick

  • 24

    Richter was a Pucker man…

  • Dakota

Quick was only a reserve in 2010

  • 24

    Dang

  • 24

Guess my memory doesn’t go back very far then huh? lol

  • Charlie

    Should it?
    see below.

All in all Leblanc, an American born in Fitchburg, MA, has had a very forgettable career. But for one two-week period in 1992 Leblanc was the talk of the hockey world!

Leblanc was the red hot goalie who almost single-handedly got the United States national team into the medal round of the 1992 Olympics in Albertville, France! In the days before NHL participation He was absolutely brilliant as his much weaker US team showed up some of the tournament favorites.

  • DM 8526

That’s how I remember it also. I was in HS at the time and our Advanced Bio teacher would bring a TV in on a rolling cart and let us watch the Winter Olympics during class. Good times..

  • 24

    So that’s your guy?
