NAPA — Mike Tice went to the tape, as the Raiders offensive line coach does every day to review practice film with his players.

It was time to examine what left tackle Donald Penn could’ve done to prevent Khalil Mack blowing past him for a sack.

“Donald,” Tice ultimately said, “I don’t have anything for you.”

To hear Tice explain the play, you understand why some of what Mack does isn’t defendable.

“(Mack) bends, he’s about this far from the ground,” Tice said, placing his hand about a foot high. “He just slips under Donald’s hands.

“What am I going to tell him? ‘Bend down there with him.’ It was unbelievable. We like working against those guys. It’s going to make us better.”

The battles along the lines are always the best part of watching a training camp practice. The one-on-one showdowns can get personal. But when there’s the respect level between teammates, the information sharing can benefit both sides.

“They let you know what you beat them with and we let them know what they got us with,” Mack said of his battles with tackles Donald Penn, Menelik Watson and others. “So having that information, it only helps us to use it against other guys.”

The addition of Bruce Irvin means the Raiders’ first-team defense is constantly sending two guys off the edge that will test the best of tackles. Irvin’s hope when the season begins in that all the attention from opposing teams goes to Mack.

“I hope they put three or four people on him and just let me run free,” Irvin said.

Tice’s group is doing its best to prevent that during camp, even if it is a challenge.

“They are reaching out and embracing it,” Tice said. “They aren’t backing down from it. They know they’re going to get beat.”

Watson said he values the work he and Penn are receiving.

“You’re not going to see too many guys like that, with that size, strength and versatility around the league,” Watson said. “So it’s great prep for me getting ready for the season. But it’s also fun. It’s a situation where we’re always talking to each other, always communicating.”

n Rookie safety Karl Joseph, the Raiders’ first-round pick, returned to practice for Friday’s light session. The team did not work out in pads. Tight end Clive Walford was also back in action.

“We work hard to make sure that we’re working smart, doing the right things with our guys so that they can be at their best,” coach Jack Del Rio said. “Just continue to strengthen and just kind of (be) preventative and make sure we don’t have issues.”

n Defensive end Denico Autry was activated from the physically unable to perform list and practiced for the first time in camp. He also missed all of the offseason program after injuring his wrist during offseason training. He practiced with a heavy wrap on his right hand.

n The first play of 7-on-7 drills featured both Walford and Joseph, with the second-year tight end snagging a pass over the coverage of the safety. Walford also caught a pass that Carr squeezed in between coverage from both Joseph and linebacker Malcolm Smith. Joseph later gave up back-to-back receptions in 11-on-11 work to tight end Lee Smith and was briefly replaced to get coached up.

TJ Carrie had an interception of Matt McGloin that he took untouched the other way for a would-be touchdown.

Connor Cook had a couple of his better throws of camp, including a nice completion to Max McCaffrey on the sideline. The ball zipped past cornerback Antonio Hamilton and McCaffrey made a nice adjustment for an acrobatic catch. Cook followed that up by hitting Mychal Rivera on a seam route.

n The Raiders claimed linebacker Lenny Jones and defensive back Tramain Jacobs off waivers, while cutting ties with defensive end Damontre Moore. They also waived injured cornerback SaQwan Edwards.

Jones, a San Leandro High product, had been waived on Thursday by the 49ers. Jacobs had been waived by the New York Giants.

Moore’s time with the Raiders turns out to be a short one. He signed with Oakland in May for no guaranteed money after splitting last season between the Giants and Miami Dolphins. The Giants cut him after a reported locker room altercation. He got into a brief on-field fracus Thursday with running back Jalen Richard.

Edwards spent the first 15 games of last season on the practice squad before being activated for the season finale. He had missed the past three practices with an undisclosed injury.

The best thing about the Olympics is the girls beach volleyball team but I don’t think I will even watch them. The Olympics is more interesting on the news with all of the coverage about bad water and toilets.

  • Raider Bren

    Not now, busy.
    Picking my favorite Raiderette.

  • Charlie

    LOL.
So lets compare Derek Jeter and what he did OFF the field for 20 years in NY and Johnny Manziiel in two years Cleveland.

    Race iissue or behavior issue?

Tell me again how many african americans got profiled when we were taking down the KKK in the late 60’s and early seventies.

    You are embarrassing your self.

  • SB3

I would assume so. Jist weird no raider gear is in there

  • SnBG

  • BroJackson34

The same KKK that’s endorsing Trump?

  • Charlie

    The answer is:

Not a race issue a behavior issue. you are right Charlie
0 African American profiled in both cases. Right again Charlie.

  • Teabag McKenz

Right on. I don’t make it up there enough, was seeing a lady up there for a minute but never really got to get out and enjoy the town.

  • BroJackson34

You’re delusional. Have a nice day!

  • willy91137

  • Charlie

That old Derek Jeter example shoved it right up your A$$.

    Does it every time.

    See ya loser.

  • inonewordraider

The popular vote within swing States determine who wins the electoral votes so they absolutely do matter

  • BroJackson34

I hope that’s the case but I hope other movements step up as well.

  • R8der4evr

Was a true players owner just like the Warriors have now.
Would love it if he could somehow get back in the 32 and buy The Raiders

  • R8der4evr

Damn shame Kenny isn’t on the stage in person but I know him Al, Tooz and others will be in spirit.

  • r8dercain

    Just the bedroom eh?

  • BroJackson34

Yes, there is no such thing as racism, it’s all a behavioral issue. LOL

You did nothing, you’re a delusional old man and you’re outdated.

  • Teabag McKenz

Florida in the 2000 election is more than enough evidence of the contrary.

  • Charlie

    Then you have David Robinson.

Hint accept responsibility for your actions.

    Not race. behavior.
Another pathetic clown that whines “the world is against me”.

    Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.

  • r8dercain

Yes sir..looking down upon the crowd

  • Gumb

    Lmao

  • Teabag McKenz

She had a crabby roommate so it was always more or less me picking her up and coming back to Chico for a weekend. It didn’t last too long.

  • inonewordraider

You hear that Florida? Might as well just stay home

  • Gumb

    Wristbands..

  • Dakota

Tuned into women’s handball….not quite what I was hoping for….

  • Gumb

    Vote Trump….

  • Teabag McKenz

I firmly believe a democracy is the easiest way to control a mass population of people by giving them a false sense of hope. It’s rather undeniable that the U.S. is an oligarchy and a ruling elite have been, and will continue to, pull the strings in order to orchestrate their underlying global agendas.

  • idahoraiderfan33

    OK

  • R8der4evr

    Not quite the racket?

  • BroJackson34

I’m not black, I’m just not an idiot. You can easily look up stats but not the kind that only favor your agenda. Still name calling? How old are you? Trump supporter at its finest! Haha

  • Charlie

    LOL.
You have Brojackson34 saying below that race is the primary driver for police brutality.

He obviously has not compared Derek Jeter to Johnny Manziel.
How about David Robinson to Ryan Leaf?

Bro is another clown that wants to whine that the world is against people of color as opposed to saying people should accept responsibility for their actions.

    Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.

  • idahoraiderfan33

    What were you hoping for

  • no mas diamante

Little early in Cook’s career to make that assumption. MM has turned out to be a good back up. Cook has his work cut out out if he wants to supplant MM. i hope it’s a good competition.

  • Teabag McKenz

If Ross Perot runs again I may decide to vote.

    Or Jesse Ventura.

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

Top posting, desperation at it’s finest!

  • Dakota

Sharknado 2….the pilot of the plane is Ted Striker from Airplane. ….

  • Charlie

    You actually are an idiot.

I have just proven that behavior ALWAYS supersedes race.

Stupidity is not a crime but it often leads to one.
    Mull it over.
    Behavior.
