Sixth-round pick Cory James stepped in with the Raiders starters on Monday when Ben Heeney went out. He’s coming off an impressive showing in his NFL debut on Friday that included five tackles.

“He’s picking up our scheme very well,” coach Jack Del Rio said. “He’s a guy that’s going to be productive. He flies around. He gets around the football. We’ve been happy with him this entire spring and he had a good showing in his first outing.”

James came in expecting to make most of his noise on special teams, but is showing enough early on that he could earn some defensive snaps — especially if Heeney misses even a little time.

“It was my first game so I made a lot of rookie mistakes,” James said of his debut, “but I also made a lot of good plays so I’m happy about that.”

Fellow linebacker Korey Toomer also was solid in Friday’s win, notching a team-high seven tackles. He also forced a fumble on special teams.

While he’s a willing core special teams player, Toomer is hoping to show he can also contribute on defense.

“That’s definitely what I’m out here trying to do,” Toomer said. “I want to show them that whatever they need me on — special teams, defense — I’m that guy that’s able to do it. I pride myself on being athletic and that’s what these coaches want to see.”

* With Mario Edwards Jr. out, Denico Autry took his first-team repetitions and should handle the starting role until he returns. Autry missed the offseason program and the start of camp with a wrist injury and played Friday with a cast on the right hand.

“He looked a little rusty the other night,” Del Rio said. “He’s got some work to do and he knows that. He’s a high-energy guy. He was with us last year so we kind of know what we can count on from him.”

* No. 2 quarterback Matt McGloin dropped a perfect pass into the hands of Andre Holmes for a touchdown in 7-on-7 work over safety Brynden Trawick. Derek Carr also connected on a 40-yard touchdown to Seth Roberts over the coverage of Tramain Jacobs.

In full team drills, McGloin had a pass intercepted by DJ Hayden that was returned for a touchdown. Rookie safety Karl Joseph added an interception when he picked off a Carr pass that was deflected at the line of scrimmage by fellow rookie Jihad Ward.

* Linebacker Neiron Ball sat out Monday’s practice along with running back Jalen Richard, who reportedly has a knee injury. Richard did some work in the weight room adjacent to the practice fields. Safety Jimmy Hall returned to practice after missing all of last week.

* The Raiders waived offensive lineman Torian White, who played 18 snaps on Friday. That leaves them with an open roster spot.

And FWIW, only in the fantasy community does anyone think DGB is worth anything. Looks like a bust to me.

  • Mets are under .500 aren’t they?

  • Dakota

That was supid…..should have tendered him as a 3rd or 4th rounder…..would have increased the chances some desperate team might have signed him and we could have received something for him. Instead, we lose him next Summer, or even if he is cut this year, for no compensation.

  • Guest123

Bills cut Leonard Hankerson. I remember having him on my fantasy squad when Julio Jones got hurt. He produced well. Don’t know what his issue was in Buffalo, but I’d bring him in for a look cee.

  • D Murray is my comeback POY pick.

The Chipster didn’t know what he was doing

  • Oak R8rs33.01

I expect him to beat out Cook for the number 2 this year. But I think Reggie lets him walk next year regardless. So hopefully Cook improves.

And I don’t know the future or claim to. Just making predictions. Feel free to screenshot them and throw them in my face later. Just putting it out there.

  • Oak R8rs33.01

Close. But it’s not because of pitching. They hit like little girls. Pathetic.

  • J Hill

1.5 Million maybe negotiated up to 2.3.

  • r8dercain

No one will give up so much as a 4th for this guy..a 6th maybe..
He’s worth signing without giving up a pick..with a pick he’s to expensive.

  • Thec

I would too as we need lack solid depth at WR….
Hell I would have brought back James Jones as he is an upgrade over guys like Holmes and Roberts.

  • Guest123

I agree. Titans look like a team that could take the division. Lot of people are sleeping on them. Don’t know about their defense though.

  • rml

They gave up on him pretty quick

  • Cespedes is going to end up with his typically electrifying 26 HR and 85 RBI

  • ComptonRaider

Word is Hankerson has hands of stone.

  • J Hill

Why do you think he is garbage?

He threw a decent ball the other night.

  • Oak R8rs33.01

Pass. Literally. Like just pass him on to retirement.

  • J Hill

I don’t think they gave Deng all that $ to come off the bench.

  • Thec

agreed however, Derrick Henry looked nice and will get some burn.

  • I remember predraft talk about Leonard Hankerson. Man the years are piling up on here.

During the HOF game fiasco the HOF directors son is Sam Baker. Who is now retired!!!!

I remember us talking about him predraft and then Charlie hyping him as the reason the Falcons made the playoffs.

We are getting old on here

  • J Hill

    Couldn’t agree more on Jones.

Not sold on anyone after Crabby.

  • Oak R8rs33.01

He’s been hurt. His average is up to close to .300. I’ve got no complaints about him. He’s been worth it. Reyes too. And Walker and Cabrera. But the rest of the roster sucks outside of pitching.

  • Thec

    Project the starting 5….

  • Guest123

They have a rookie WR they are very high on named Tajae Sharpe. I think they needed to pave the way for him.

  • Guest123

I was hoping we’d take Henry in round 2.

  • J Hill

Not with Henry on the squad taking carries.

  • Oak R8rs33.01

Me either. But I’d rather them get the reps. Next year should be our year.

  • It was only a slight knock on Yoenis.

He makes the hard look easy and the easy look hard and amazingly ends up with the same stats almost every year

  • Guest123

remember the avg nfl lifespan is ~ 3 years.

  • Thec

    Well said….

  • J Hill

    Our year for???

Hopefully addressing WR early in the draft.

  • Thec

My sentiments exactly….I trust the org however, I do not trust Holmes or Roberts.

  • Oak R8rs33.01

He does. But he’s going opposite field more this year which has increased his average. And he’s closing that high fastball hole he has in his swing. Laid off of it most of the year. But he can still be exasperating. Weird plays in the field, not running out strike outs that r dropped by the catcher. Stuff like that.

  • Oak R8rs33.01

    AFC championship. Raiders vs Jags.

  • J Hill

    Russell
    Clarkson
    Deng
    Randle
    Mosgov

    Ingram first guy off bench
    Nance
    Calderon
    Zubac
    Brown

  • Gdog

No thanks. And usually when people make predictions. Its prefaced with “I think…” or something. WHich you never do. Because you never have, You think you know everything already. Guessing its all you have ever done.

Evidence: “He’s getting paid between $4 and $7 million next year. Not by us tho. You’ll see.”

  • Oak R8rs33.01

Eagles picked up Dorial Green Beckham. Roseman making moves, gotta give him credit. Doing his best to arise from the hole Kelly put them in.

  • Guest123

Eagles are suckers! DGB is trash, Titans already had one of him…goes by the name of Justin Hunter. Same guy.

  • Thec

Ingram can play the 2…Clarkson sits.

  • Oak R8rs33.01

It’s a blog. I’m not gonna add IMO into every opinion I put out there. And I’m confident. But I have no problem admitting when I’m wrong. Just doesn’t happen that often.

  • Thec

BTW, Russell is a star waiting to happen…Guy has IT.

  • Gdog

I watched him play like garbage vs Iowa. COuldn’t throw a pea in the ocean until the final drive. Then I watched him get BENCHED in his biggest game of his career. BENCHED! Do you know how horrific one has to be to get benched in a huge bowl game?

    Things like that…

  • Dakota

Lame……they need to start Ingram and Zuuuuubac. They are our future. Get them floortime.

  • Oak R8rs33.01

Just saying. They r trying. Lots of moves this year. Moved up in the draft twice. Extended a few foundation players. Making trades.

  • Gdog

Yes. You have never admitted you are wrong. We all know.

  • Guest123

they are trying like hampsters try when they spin little wire cage wheels.

  • J Hill

Will Hayden be on the team next year?

  • Oak R8rs33.01

Sure I have. And so have you, except it usually takes a day or two to get it out of you.

  • J Hill

    LOL

  • Gdog

I am not sure he got worse every game. My memory is not what it used to be though. Gawd that was a horrible team. Horribly coached.

  • J Hill

    That would be a thought.

Can he guard NBA 2s now, or will he be in foul trouble?
