Three Raiders who hurt themselves against Packers

Antonio Hamilton

The undrafted rookie cornerback was a stud return man in college at South Carolina State. He got his first chance to show something with a second-quarter punt return, but didn’t go after the ball and let it bounce to take away his chance to a return.

It may be cruel, but some of these players will only get one chance like that to show something. He also got called for a special teams penalty and his already slim roster hopes lost weight.

Jaydon Mickens

Mickens also needs to create some juice as a returner, because the wide receiver opportunities are going to be slim. He too got just one chance and muffed the punt. There was a Raiders penalty on the play anyway, but anyone who can’t hold on to the ball isn’t going to get a good shot to make the team.

Matt McCants

He’s essentially the fourth offensive tackle for the Raiders. If they keep nine offensive linemen, his job should be safe. But if they only go with eight, it’ll probably come down to McCants and seventh-round pick Vadal Alexander.

McCants could’ve have made Del Rio happy with a personal foul penalty for instigating. Alexander had his own 15-yard flag, a facemask after Connor Cook threw an interception. That’s at least a little more tolerable.

Bonus demerits: Linebacker Ben Heeney got out there and played a few days after getting nicked up in practice, but he struggled to fill run gaps and didn’t add to the confidence in the Raiders linebacker corps. Wide receiver Johnny Holton caught a 21-yard pass from Connor Cook, but did so after bobbling it and having to corral it with his legs. It was a nice improv move, but use the hands next time. Linebacker Cory James was demolished at the goal line on a run by John Crockett. Wide receiver Amari Cooper made next to no effort to go after a Derek Carr pass that was intercepted. Initially, it looked like Green Bay had a long return on it thanks to Cooper not even making the tackle, but a replay showed Cooper barely got his hands on him as he was going down to rule him down by contact.

  • Murray is just disappointing

  • MachoManRandySavage

Talent… Yeah, thats what it is

  • RIGHT!!!!

  • Raider Bob

How about this, trade Rivera to Steelers for DeAngelo Williams

  • timetojam

No trade, but gotta get some help back there

  • Are we one of those “on paper” teams LMAO

  • marks hair

    Until we prove otherwise.

  • MachoManRandySavage

So, about Heeney…. Malcolm Smith is the defacto MLB on running plays… But Heeney can blitz, I’ll give him that

  • HUGE problem

  • Raider Bob

I must agree, or give him the ball deep in the backfield and let him hit the hole going full speed, and please tell him to run lower.

  • marks hair

The only possible help we can get is if we move ball to middle linebacker. And even he is too light

  • I told you to stop telling him about what you told me and you thought you told him!

  • timetojam

Offense looked out of sync, defense wasn’t horrible. Pretty normal stuff for an 8-8 team, which is where we’re at.

  • Born With a Patch

_____ didn’t look good a RB last night…. Can fill that gap with anybody not named Olawale

  • Is anyone else here as disappointed in Malcolm Smith as I am?

  • hwnrdr

so in one post you said it was a pre-season game, and in another its not ok? Alright, I hear you…if he makes false starts regularly from when the season starts then I would agree with you! I believe he will get it together…

  • R8erEduc8er

Lol I don’t think it’s a lot, but they are big, important things. I think once the oline gels, Murray will play well. He and D-Wash should give us enough. Heeney doesn’t impress.

  • Dakota

Hey guys, it takes 5-7 years just to build a roster where our starters can hope to look decent against scrubs of a team like the Packers, because the Packers have won one SB in the last 18 years, and don’t forget 1987! Oh, and if you didn’t see how a team was built in 1975, then you just don’t know.

    Wise words of Charlie.

  • marks hair

No. I think he’s a backup who’s lucky to start.

  • Olawale didn’t look to bad

  • So – you are saying that you have lowered expectations LOL

  • hwnrdr

    LOL

  • marks hair

Yes I saw enough last year.

  • Dakota we are 5 years into a 10 year plan you just need to be patient young man!!

  • R8erEduc8er

I think a lot of players are saving themselves for the reg season.

  • Dakota

Yes…..he already is a HOFer, so, yes.

  • Born With a Patch

Heeney looked like Oher did in the SB, skating backwards

  • 0tt0

5-7 years….lol…entire teams turnover during that period

  • Dakota

Well, first he said 3 years, then he said 3 to 5 years…..now he is saying 8-8 is great in year 5, so he is now on the 5-7 year timeframe.

  • R8der4evr

It did take a lot of work to get rid of the players that were not worth the money and to wait on some draft picks to build a decent roster but I agree no more excuses 10 wins minimum.

  • marks hair

And it goes without saying our problems at tight end continued. Just not enough production. And Smith really doesn’t help the running game. That’s just a story people tell about him

  • Dakota

They were gone 3 years ago…..

  • I like how he is always in a fight with someone

  • Dan78

10 and then… Who thought that was really going to be the case..

  • R8der4evr

I get it but you know the situation no free agents wanted to come here and no head coach wanted this mess that was left by the past regime.

  • Good morning Dan

  • Dakota

Hey, it did take us 9 years to land a man on the moon, so how could we expect the Raiders to make the playoffs in less than that amount of time? I mean this is the era of parity, but still.

  • marks hair

My thoughts are if this guy is only an extra offensive linemen we might as well play an extra offensive linemen. Because 1. and extra linemen can actually block. And 2. an extra lineman gives you a back-up lineman.

  • Dan78

Good mornin 6’s… They layed a stinken egg on the field yesterday… That stench is going to stink for a while..

  • I am donating $20 to “adblocker” today. They made blogging here possible.

  • Dakota

I don’t think you do actually.

  • Supposed to be parity but the Patriots have dominated the last 15 years. 11 AFC championship games is an insane amount of chances to play in the super Bowl.

  • Did you see how mad Del Rio was?

  • Dakota

Did he choke someone out? Carr maybe?

  • marks hair

Enough Williams in the doghouse for being fat b.s.
He’s better than Ellis. End of story.

  • Gdog

Thoughts on the game before I fell asleep:

-Cook has a some great talent. That pass he made on the dime across his body rolling to the left is why he is a pro. Still worried about his head.

-It seemed Gabe was getting pushed back every play. (Did he come in out of shape?)

-Both lines seemed to be pushed around.

-Heeney made a play that reminded me so much of Morrison/McClain, it disgusted me. A running play was rolling left, so he leaves his gap and the RB cuts right where he was supposed to be. If he would have stood there like a statue he would have made the tackle for two yards. We have all these LBs and not a single MIDDLE?

-The Musgrave offense looks about like it did last year, runs up the gut, short passes, screens on third and long.

-McGloin might lose his backup job soon.

-And how many times in a row are we going to play GB and look like we don’t belong in the same league with them? Its got to be 5 now…

Practice game, but this was a tough watch…

  • Gdog

He said 3-5 years. A million times. Now its 5-7? Pretty soon he will insist he said 7 to 10 years…

  • Raider Bob

Pretty much on point with you’re assessment of the game

  • Gdog

Better than Washington. I don’t get why he doesn’t get a chance.

  • Gdog

Many people did. You can’t teach instincts.
