MATCHUP TO WATCH

Connor Cook vs. Seahawks backups. OK, so we’re stretching here. The starters will see very little, if any, time for either team and this is the most meaningless of the four meaningless preseason games. Even if Cook excels, it’s not like he’ll be doing so against the Legion of Boom. But still, the Seattle defense he’ll face has been getting that same coaching and the Seahawks have yet to allow more than 18 points in any of their three preseason games. Cook has looked reasonably comfortable on the field and the Raiders hope to see more of that Thursday — then not see him on a field in a game again until next August.

STATS TO LIVE BY

Two of the top five rushers in the NFL this preseason will be in the house with Seattle’s Christine Michael (157 yards) and the Raiders’ George Atkinson III (135). That’s after Nos. 3 and 4 were at the Coliseum on Saturday in Tennessee’s Derrick Henry (154) and DeMarco Murray (153) . … The Raiders’ 5.6 yards per carry this preseason is third-best in the NFL and they rank tied for eight in rushing yards. … Oakland quarterbacks have been sacked just once in three preseason games. No other team has been sacked fewer than four times. … The Raiders have allowed 149.7 rushing yards per game, fourth-worst in the NFL.

FAMILIAR FACES

Where do we start? Gotta be outside linebacker Bruce Irvin, the former Seahawk in his first season with the Raiders. He probably won’t play, but can catch up with some old friends. Three other Raiders linebackers are also former Seahawks in Malcolm Smith, Korey Toomer and John Lotulelei. Why are so many former Seattle linebackers now in Oakland? Well, Raiders defensive coordinator Ken Norton Jr. is the former Seahawks linebackers coach. Raiders DBs coach Marcus Robertson also played two seasons in Seattle and offensive line coach Mike Tice played 10 seasons with the Seahawks. Former Raiders coach Tom Cable is the Seahawks’ assistant head coach and offensive line coach.

LAST MEETING

The Raiders have closed out the last 11 preseasons by facing the Seahawks, with this just the third that’s been in Oakland. Seattle won last year’s game 31-21. Seth Roberts had seven catches for 110 yards and a touchdown and Matt McGloin completed 16 of 24 passes for 186 yards and two TDs. Seattle has a 10-4 lead in the all-time preseason series while the Raiders own a 28-24 advantage in the regular season against their former AFC West rivals.

INJURY IMPACT

Tight end Gabe Holmes was finally placed on IR for the Raiders, who also remain without defensive end Mario Edwards Jr. Linebacker Neiron Ball appears unlikely to play after missing practice all week. It’s worth wondering if he could end up on IR if his oft-surgically repaired knee remains an issue.

THE WEATHER FACTOR

The forecast calls for 64 degrees and mostly sunny at kickoff on a clear evening that dips only slightly to 61 by the end of the game.

QUOTABLE:

“Obviously, Thursday is going to be what it is, but it’s going to be an opportunity for our younger guys to get out there and do what they do.” — Raiders DE Khalil Mack epitomizing what the fourth preseason game is like for a Pro Bowl player

    Why did they cut Amerson?

  • 24

Let’s just sign all the garbage pail kids and see what happens.

  • marks hair

    The coaches do.

  • Raiders21

injuries, has missed nine games in last two years. Washington also drafted cravens to go with Compton and mason foster. He was odd man out. Saved them 4 mil in cap space.

  • r8dercain

    Concord/ripon

  • Morilla_00

All silver. Black isn’t a color.

  • 2romes

That is not true. because as I have posted before many teams with a better record have played their starters.

  • r8dercain

    I’m in norcal

  • 24

You think you’re gonna find that out with 1 more series against the Seahawks?

We’ll find out week 1 versus the Saints.

  • HELLSBELLS

    He sucked for them.

  • Ken SnakeLer

I think so too. Just making the jersey silver is the least amount of change but would be badazz.

  • marks hair

Their starters? No. That’s extraordinarily rare.
A few starters who need a little extra work because they’ve been injured? Yeah that happens.
Players battling for an unsettled position? Yeah that happens. But people don’t throw their starting units out there for no reason at all hoping that one series is going to suddenly make them a better team. It’s silly

  • r8dercain

Another man’s trash is one man’s treasure

  • DutchRaid

Kinda greedy there…MLB and I will be very happy.

  • Amerson

  • R8erEduc8er

    I would.

  • Raiders21

    Nice!!

  • HELLSBELLS

Lets roll the dice, not like we have a ton of LB’s to choose from.

  • 2romes

I’m afraid not. Many good teams have started their first team in the last preseason games.

  • HELLSBELLS

Make them look like Al’s old white jump suit, but with numbers.

  • r8dercain

    Aye what’s up sixes

  • 24

If anything…I’d prefer to see McGloin. He clearly needs the work more than Carr does and this is a game we can use to develop Cook as well by giving him most of the game to work with.

This game is great for development of your backups and giving them some game time before the season starts because you never know if you might need them sooner than expected.

  • RaiderCODE

kid is smooth though – excellent feet

  • Raiders21

Is Rueben Randle better than Holmes or our other receivers (besides crabtree and coop)? He was also recently cut

  • Hi-tech burrito – pretty good

  • 24

Hes got an awkward throwing motion tho.

  • JLofty

    a curtis loften type huh?

  • 24

    That’s funny

  • HELLSBELLS

    Trent Ricardson

  • DutchRaid

Not a great scheme fit…Washington played mostly zone? Also aren’t we supposed to have a very good DB coach?

  • r8dercain

No..not authentic enough for me..you might like it though..

  • Raiders21

    yuck

  • eating one now its okay

  • 24

    Great…now I want a burrito

  • DutchRaid

I wonder what kinda player we could wish for in this situation?

  • 24

    Code 2127

    Unless it’s Trent Richardson

  • HELLSBELLS

    What color is that?

  • r8dercain

    I’m cool..
Come to Berkeley tmrw for lunch..I’ll take you to a real burrito spot..my treat!

  • 24

I’ll tell you what…if he is…Reggie will find him.

  • DutchRaid

Dude is always hurt…in New York he never practiced, his ankles are bad, really really bad!

  • Raiders21

Look up Perry Riley. Doesn’t look like a terrible option and was a surprise cut. Was one of washingtons most productive defenders over the last couple years. Can play all three downs too

  • r8dercain

    You don’t want a Hi-tech burrito..

  • 24

    Kuechly would be nice

  • JLofty

    Marin Catholic Wildcats!!

  • 24

    Rustic orange?

  • r8dercain

    That’s landfill

  • Guest123

He does have a unique talent at sniffing out other people’s dumpsters

  • 24

    So basically the Bronocs?

  • 2romes

Yes, I do. The Raiders can learn a lot from a series or two with them. After every game what do always hear from players and coaches? It is what they learn from it is what they say.
