The Karl Joseph era apparently won’t begin with him in the starting lineup.

The Raiders released their updated depth chart Tuesday and have Nate Allen listed as the starter at strong safety. Joseph, the team’s first-round pick, had held that spot since the team’s initial depth chart of the exhibition season.

It’s not a huge surprise if you consider how Joseph has been used in recent weeks. In the third exhibition game against Tennessee in which the starters played into the third quarter, he played only 22 defensive snaps. That was the fewest among projected starters.

“He’s still growing,” coach Jack Del Rio said of Joseph after the Tennessee game. “He’s still competing for time, still developing. Remember, he missed the whole offseason. For a young guy, as far as getting reps, he was there mentally doing the best he could but it takes time. It takes reps and experience. He’s getting it on the run right now. He’ll continue to work on it.”

Joseph and second-round pick Jihad Ward were also the only two projected starters (at the time) who played in the exhibition finale against Seattle, logging 31 snaps on defense and eight more on special teams.

Joseph said after that game that he was continuing to work on his “eyes” and where he needs to be on any given play. He had eight tackles in the four exhibition games.

The rookie from West Virginia and No. 14 overall selection was behind the eight ball when he joined the Raiders still rehabilitating from a torn anterior cruciate ligament suffered his senior season. He missed the whole offseason program, but sat out only one training camp practice.

“I think the coaches have done a good job of watching my reps and how I practiced,” Joseph said after the Seattle game. “I love the grind. I understand it’s a process, just got to trust the process.”

The other major depth chart change was Dan Williams returning to the starting defense. With Mario Edwards Jr. now on injured reserve, he comes off the depth chart and is replaced by Jihad Ward at that defensive end spot. Williams takes over Ward’s defensive tackle spot.

Here’s the entire depth chart for Week 1 vs. the Saints.
