The PlayStation 3 made a grand entrance around 8 p.m. In a mock police show, they cleared the master of ceremonies off Fourth Street and brought in a handful of black SUVs, with passengers dressed up as G-men.
After that, a big-rig came through Minna Street and parked along mission. Soon after, Sony Executive Jack Tretton came out and the folks opened the doors to the truck. Inside, as everyone expected, were loads of PlayStation 3s.
Tretton hand carried the first boxes into the Metreon amid camera crews and flashing lights. It was a very Hollywood production. At first, I thought the whole thing was real. I thought the launch party was getting too loud and the cops were coming to break it up.
But in the end, it was all part of a carefully crafted entrance meant to emphasize the value of the PS3. This is something that should be valued like gold or diamonds and the pseudo-armed escort illustrates just that.
