Payroll’s explanation of this is that the premiums go up January 1, 2011 and rather than take out the extra next year when it’s effective they would start deducting it now. However the employees were not notified and most of them are switching plans to Kaiser which is cheaper. It is currently open enrollment so employees have not even finished choosing who they want as their insurance carrier. The District is taking the extra money from them now without their knowledge or confirmation that they want the coverage. How and when will they get it back?…For example family coverage meant the employee had an extra $138withheld!! Enough is enough, we have our hours cut, threats of lay-offs, non payment of hours worked by secretaries and now this? Something needs to be done!
