While the methods so far don’t really qualify for the title of Strategic Plan, I am more impressed than I was before, and it sounds at least so far, as the best thing to date, but that doesn’t mean we can’t do better. Hopefully we will get something that we can build upon.

I said in part: “It is super ironic and flabergasting that Mildred Browne and Rose Lock would question the Charter about disproportionality and lack of equity plus needs of diverse learners when for years now they have been the authors of policies and proceedures in MDUSD that have led the State to sanction the district for no improvement, identify six schools as the worst in the state, and then withhold SIG funds for non-compliance with the promises of the district. They have been part of the failures and have the unmitigated gall to question the Charter — unbelieveable. ” See the rest of the post under #1 above. Correction to your post. The District staff does not grant or deny approval — the Board of Education does. As far as I recall the Board of Educuation NEVER voted to have staff investigate the charter proposal — if I am wrong, perhaps you can direct me to the agenda “action” item.

It sounds like they are just doing their job. I’d be “flabbergasted” if they didn’t ask any questions. Not only does the District have the right to question charter school reps about their plans, they have the legal responsibility to do so as the agency that will grant approval or disapproval.

I wonder why ? It appears that Denise’s “premature” departure caught Lawrence by surprise, and since he just appointed his sidekick Sue Brothers to quash the mutiny at CVHS, appointing her now to a SASS Directorship would be a little premature. Stay tuned. Lawrence has to figure out a way to keep that job open for several months until SB has some time in the district because it is a segue for her to become an Asst Supt.

At the Town Hall meeting, Rep. Miller said: “If you want to improve your home value, fix the school down the street.”

His point was that it could be more cost-effective to invest in school programs than in a kitchen remodel.

Instead of students getting lectured and bored, they get to interact which develops the thinking skills necessary that any employer would want. But on the BAC video at 21 minutes, Jerry Weast said businesses must get involved and “treat the school system like your most important client.” MDUSD is not maximizing business partnerships. John Muir Walnut Creek takes volunteers from AUHSD and SRVUSD, but not from MDUSD except for a YVHS Academy. Northgate is a few blocks away but students, like NHS Sports Medicine Academy or CVHS Public Service Academy, cannot even volunteer there.

We’re still waiting, waiting, waiting for MDUSD to get meeting videos online. You’re so right about tying into high school programs for real-life applications. The value of academy programs, business partnerships, giving relevance and excitement to education was a main topic of the Weast-Torlakson-Steinberg conference panel. When our leaders agree then maybe MDUSD should follow!
